SATURDAY STORY - MARCH 6, 2021

 SATURDAY STORY - MARCH 6, 2021

I’m trying to follow a writing prompt this week.

“Write about someone who books a bargain vacation, only to be told when they arrive that they need to share a hotel suite with a stranger.”

******

IT was FINALLY here.  “MAUI HERE I COME” was Cory’s shout as she left Beadle Hall.

It was spring break at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota and Cory’s dream vacation was here.  A dream vacation to Maui!!!

Cory Stimpson was an administrative assistant at Dakota State University for the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.  Okay, Cory didn’t make a lot of money - but she didn’t spend much money either.  She lived on the second floor in an Aunt and Uncle's house on West Seventh street.  She lived for free - kind of - as she ran errands for her Aunt and Uncle (who were in their 80s).  She cooked and cleaned.  Maybe not the life that Cory had dreamt about when she was a little girl.

She was going to be a princess - just like those Disney Princesses.  Even her Dad called her “Princess”.  But, there are a lot of little girls and very few Disney Princesses.

After graduation from Woonsocket High School, she went to Dakota State and got a degree in Business.  She worked as an office assistant in the College of Arts and Sciences while a student and when she graduated, the position of administrative assistant opened up.  Without much else going on, she took the position.  Now in her mid-thirties, life hadn’t quite passed her up, but she did need some excitement in her life.

But, ever since then, she had dreamt of being a princess - on a beautiful island.  She saved her money - and now she was packed and going!!!

*****

She had booked the trip through a vacation broker - Maui Excursions and Gaiety (MEG).  She had a hotel in Lahaina - the old whaling village on the northwest side of Maui. (It was about $400 cheaper than all the other packages - which fit her budget!!)

The week before spring break had been bitterly cold with highs in the low teens and overnight lows below zero.  Cory was ready.

*****

Her trip had three legs - Sioux Falls South Dakota to Denver, Denver to Los Angeles, and Los Angeles to Kahului Maui Hawaii!!!

The petite, blue-eyed Cory had been to Minneapolis, Omaha, Denver, and the Black Hills of South Dakota.  She had flown from Sioux Falls to Minneapolis twice, and Sioux Falls to Denver once for a cousin’s wedding.  But, those were regional trips without stops.

*****

It was a long and grueling day for Cory.  She tried to sleep, but sleeping in an airport (in the middle seat) was a challenge.   The leg from Denver to Los Angeles had been crazy.  She was in the middle seat between two heavier people and she felt squeezed.  And, the long leg to Maui was okay as there was an empty seat she took.

The flight was about twenty minutes early to Kahului airport.  She got her suitcase and then looked for MEG’s van.  There were two other people from her flight that were also going to MEG.

WOW - she was in HAWAII!!!  At the airport, Maui ambassadors put plastic leis over her head.  Stepping outside, she was in paradise finally.  The trip from Kahului to Lahaina took about 45 minutes.  She sat next to Paige from Shreveport Louisiana - her first time to know anybody from Louisiana.  It was also Paige’s first time in Hawaii!!!

Cory and Paige talked almost non-stop on their ride to Lahaina.  They both were excited.  Paige was 42 and divorced from an abusive husband.  She was a nurse at Family Health Systems in Shreveport - and she had never met anybody from South Dakota.

The MEG van pulled up in front of what looked like an old Motel 6 hotel.  Paige turned to Cory and whispered “I think I know why this was so cheap.  Oh well, I’m only going to sleep here.”

The van went into the lobby.  Cory was going to room 311 and Paige to room 315.

The clerk mentioned that there was a continental breakfast in the morning from 6:00 to 10:00.

In the elevator, Cory asked Paige “Can we meet for breakfast at about 8:00 and plan our day.”

Paige said “Yes”.  Then she added - “that is about noon our time”.  She had a big grin “Oh well, let’s get to bed”!!

Cory used her room card to open the door and found the light switch.  AND SHOCK OF ALL SHOCKS - there were two double beds in the room and a man was in the first bed!!  He sat up when she opened the door.  Cory said “I’m sorry” and closed the door.

She quickly went back to the lobby desk.  “There is already somebody in my room - and it is a MAN”!!

The clerk smiled and asked, “Did you read the small print on our contract?”

Cory said “no”.

The clerk said, “All rooms are set for double occupancy.  I do admit that we thought the name Cory was a male name”.

Cory was stunned for a minute.  Then she blurted “Can you at least put me in a room with a woman?”

The clerk looked on her computer.  I have one room with one woman - room 219.  I’ll move you there”.

Cory looked relieved and said, “I’ll take it”.

The clerk switched the room key cards.

So back on the elevator and to room 219.  This time she expected a woman in the room and there was.  BUT the woman wasn’t alone and was ‘entertaining a man”.

She had a decision.  She was tired and ready for bed, so she walked in - to the surprise and horror of the couple and said “Hi, I’m Cory, and I guess I’m your roommate tonight”!!!  Ignoring them, Cory went into the restroom.  What else could go wrong?  Hearing the door open and close, she guessed it might be okay to come out.

The man had grabbed his clothes, dressed, and left.

The lady had pulled her sheets up to her neck - and glared at Cory.

Cory pulled her suitcase to the other bed, got out her nightie and toilet things, and went back into the bathroom, closed the door and brushed her teeth, and washed her face.

Coming back out, the lady in the other bed whispered “I’m sorry.  It was late and I wasn’t expecting you”.

Cory smiled, one of her good, wholesome South Dakota smiles, and said “That’s okay”.  Then she climbed into her bed and was asleep in about five minutes.

*****

In the morning, the other lady was up first.  Cory woke when the lady got up and went to the bathroom, but quickly went back to sleep.

Later, Cory woke - she was alone and her watch - still on South Dakota time, said “11:00”. She stretched and went to the bathroom for her morning activities.  The warm shower was wonderful.

“Wow”, she thought to herself.  “What a day yesterday was.  Maybe I can just relax on the beach today and work on my tan.”

She dressed and went to the lobby to meet Paige.  Paige laughed at Cory’s room situation.

“Maybe both of us can be lucky and find some rich men who are vacationing here and they will sweep us off our feet”, Paige said.  Cory laughed.  She was enjoying this girl from Louisiana.

They took their time at the continental breakfast.  There wasn’t all that much food, but orange juice, coffee, and a time to get to talk with each other were great.  Shops on the main street in Lahaina didn’t open until 10:00 so there was no rush.  They agreed to meet at 9:45 and walk the streets and find the beaches.

*****

It was almost a relaxing day for Cory and Paige.  They went shopping and walked to the beach.  They found an interesting place for lunch together, and then went back to the hotel to change.  Cory’s roommate was gone (although her things were still in the room).  Cory had a brief moment of wishing that was her.  Thirty-six, and single.  There had been some men in her life - but just not anything that worked out.

****

The two met at 2:00 with their bikinis and covering and headed to the beach.  There was a reasonable number of people at the beach but it sure wasn’t full.  They found a place to put their towels down.  Cory rubbed sunblock onto Paige who did the same back.  Paige, who was black, didn’t want much of a tan.  She joked that she was tan enough already.

They did get into the water.  Cory was a good swimmer but didn’t go out too far. Paige splashed Cory, who splashed her back.  (Cory thought, this is going to be okay)

It was Paige’s idea that they explore the beach more.  A little farther to the north was a sign “Clothing Optional Beyond this point”.  Cory was naive and asked Paige “Does that mean it is a nude beach?”

Paige grinned and said “yes”.

Cory wasn’t sure she could go, but Paige said “Well clothing is optional, but we don’t have to be naked.  And, besides, who knows us here?”

Paige also promised not to take pictures of Cory on her iPhone on the clothing-optional beach, and Cory also agreed.

The clothing-optional beach was almost deserted - maybe about ten people - all nude - on a mile-long beach.

Paige and Cory looked at each other.  Paige said it first “Do you want to try going clothing optional?”

Cory said, “not yet”.  But, they laid their towels down and Paige stripped off her bikini.  She said, “You realize that as a nurse, I’ve seen pretty much everything.”

Cory stifled a laugh and told the story of walking into the second room last night.  Paige got a big laugh out of that.

That was a first for Cory.  Paige seemed not to notice as time went on, Cory stopped blushing every time Paige or another “clothing optional” person walked by. Wow had she lead a sheltered life!!

The rest of the week was full of excitement.  Sunday, the van took those that were interested in the volcano on Maui - Haleakala. Cory had brought a jacket with her and was glad she had.  It was windy and cold on the mountain with light snow flurries.  Paige wasn’t quite as prepared so Cory grabbed her new friend to keep her warm.

Monday was a kayaking day.  The two new friends did well kayaking.  Paige had done it before so she sat in the back and could steer while Cory tried to keep paddling.  Tuesday was a bus trip to Hana on the southeast coast of Maui.  They saw lots of waterfalls.  Wednesday they had a surfing lesson. And Thursday and Friday were beach days with optional turtle watching, scuba diving, or more kayaking.

And, (blush) Cory did try the “clothing optional” beach on the last day of the trip.

*****

Returning to South Dakota was okay for Cory.  She promised to stay in contact with Paige (and they did).  And Cory’s roommate didn’t entertain any more men in their room!!

She had been at the ocean, she had made a new best friend - a black woman from Louisiana, she had kayaked, been to the top of the highest point on Maui, and even skinny-dipped and was nude on a beach (she didn’t tell many about that part of the story).

That summer, Paige flew into Sioux Falls and Cory and Paige went to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Devils Tower, AND the world’s Only Corn Palace.  And, on Christmas/semester break Cory went to Shreveport and stayed with  Paige (and even went to a black church, and into New Orleans).

*****

End of story

The story shows that sometimes we do need to “break out of the ordinary”.  Pollyanna might suggest that Cory was never the same after that.  She went on to get a master's and doctorate degree at Dakota State (why not, she was on campus anyway), and eventually took a faculty position at LSU - Louisiana State University in Shreveport Louisiana!!  And, she lived happily ever after!!!

Now, my introduction!!  I have written about an infinite God in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55

**********

We ALL are made in the image of God - as Suzanne’s blog points out we all have different looks, likes, and abilities.  And, gasp, some maybe not follow traditional gender roles.  Did a person give up his or her or their humanness to adapt to a different gender orientation?

If you will, at one point, we viewed slaves as “non-humans”.  Do we now view LGBTQ people as “non-humans”?

OKAY - off my soapbox again!!  Here is Suzanne’s writing!!

******************************************

My beloved and I are mentoring a woman as she deconstructs her understanding of God and sex built over decades of seminary and ministry. One of her recent questions helped me realize the absurdity of the notion that there is a "right" way to experience sexual attraction or gender identity. She asked me to put the thoughts I verbalized into writing, so I'm doing that here.

Within heterosexual circles, it's pretty common to hear offhand comments about physical characteristics people find attractive. Some guys like big boobs. Some are leg men. Others are all about that ass. The same holds true for women; some get excited by a hairy chest, others find them kind of gross. Some girls groove on guys built like linebackers, others prefer their lovers compact and lithe.

So if we are to believe God has an ideal for sexual desire's orientation, what is the holiest type of attraction? Is it more godly to get excited by big boobs or small ones? Should good Christian women seek conversion therapy if they find furry shoulders sexier than sleek ones, or is it the reverse, because of Essau's blessedly hairy knuckles? How does God feel about a Bible-believing man's excitement over his wife's ankles? Is ankle attraction sinful?

The same ridiculousness applies to gender. Long before gender came to the forefront of national discourse, everyone—even devout Christians—recognized variations in gender performance. It's nothing new. Females who liked sports and avoided dresses were called tomboys. A wide range of masculinity was understood, with uber-masculine guys considered macho studs, and "atypical" guys labeled as nerds or sissies.

So if the Christian right is correct and God has an ordained concept of gender with which people must conform to be godly, how does it fit into these widely-recognized levels of variation? Is a woman in a dress, lipstick, and stilettos who likes crafting more worthy of God's approval than one in jeans who likes fixing cars? Is a dude clad in lumberjack garb who likes to hunt and watch football more worthy than one who wears button-downs and tailored trousers while working in a library?

A century ago, pink was a color for boys rather than girls because of its closeness to red. Long hair has gone in and out of favor for men and women, along with wigs and high heels. In many indigenous cultures, face and body makeup are applied by men before going into battle and is an intensely masculine gender performance.

So does God want pink onesies for girl babies or boy babies? Do they get mad when women wear pants or are they angry that men wear them now, given that Jesus wore a dress? Are mullets an abomination gender blending of God's hair expectations?

Can you see the ridiculousness of these ideas?

Our creator and judge is the force that keeps the universe expanding and the blood in our veins pumping. The force which created the astonishing diversity of sea life and endlessly evolving rainforest insects. The force which perpetually calls us to love and unity.

The idea that the God who created the magical lushness and reproductive oddity of anemones sits around obsessing about boundaries for human desire and gender manifestation is an abuse of biblical texts and flies in the face of God's revealed reality.

God doesn't frown on diversity in any form. They invented it.

THANK YOU SUZANNE!!!!

I do want to add a few comments.  I have written about an Infinite God before - Isaiah 55:8-9 say

I am finite - and God is infinite - I can’t possibly understand the concept of “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  [...]The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. (From John chapter 1).

Humans have tried to make God in their image, although the general concept is that God made us in HIs image.

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.” (Psalm 139:13-14)

THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2021 - MEDIA, HATE, DIVISION

THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2021 - MEDIA, HATE, DIVISION

The day that is a command “March forth”

*****

DISCLAIMER.  PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I AM ON MY “SOAPBOX” TODAY.  I AM “PREACHING” MY PERSONAL VIEWPOINTS!!! AND THAT VIEWPOINT IS LOVE WINS!!

*****

I hate two wonderful friends - let’s call them A and B. One is a fervent Fox-News viewer and the other is a fervent MS-NBC viewer.  Depending on the day, A will watch Fox from about 5:00 to 10:00 pm, and B will watch MSNBC from 7:00 to 10:00.

To me, the two “big personalities” are Sean Hannity on Fox and Rachel Maddow on MS-NBC.

If you turned the SOUND OFF - and watched an hour of Rachel Maddow, and then watched an hour of Sean Hannity - my guess is that they would be similar if the sound is off.

Actresses (in general) always had make-up.  I'm sure the off-screen directors, handlers, and producers do ” make-up” -  not necessarily their looks, but an analysis of how these big anchors make the show entertaining (and get more viewers).

Rachel and Sean have make-up persons, publicity staff, and a full crew of people doing the research that makes their programs appealing (and making money)!!  My bias is that the more fervent the ideas expressed the stronger their audience poll.  Ratings lead to advertising rates, advertising rates lead to network profitability.

They probably have writers and lawyers that keep them from crossing over into libel lawsuits!

According to Forbes Management, Sean Hannity gets 36 million a year (https://www.forbes.com/sites/hayleycuccinello/2018/07/16/sean-hannity-celebrity-100/?sh=75fcfa6d2d93)

Rachel Maddow is not quite in the same league (yet) - making only 7 million a year (https://filmdaily.co/news/rachel-maddow-net-worth/)

TIME OUT - Sean Hannity gets 36 million a year?  That’s a lot of money.  If you follow the money, advertisers are “throwing” money at his program because he reaches a lot of people.  He has a lot of FANS - or he has a lot of FANATICS!!

Rachel Maddow gets 7 million a year - I won’t make that much in my lifetime!!!  These must be some great ENTERTAINERS!!

And where do these “entertainers” and their shows get the money?  From sponsors.  The more flamboyant, the more outlandish, the more implications they make - the more viewers, the higher the ratings, and the more the networks charge the sponsors.  (Remember the “Follow the Money” concept!!)

And, viewers - and friends - what can I do about their programs.  If I’m upset about Ted Cruz’s trip to Mexico, can I do anything about it?  (Nope - nil.)  I suppose I could write a note to senator Cruz and get a pleasant “Thank you for your note”.  I’m pretty sure that Senator Cruz doesn’t see notes from most of his constituents - unless the name is significant - and their support of his last campaign was well known.

Can I get upset about Governor Cuomo’s handling of the COVID deaths in nursing homes in New York? He isn’t even my governor.  But, the networks want me to say to my friends “Last night I saw this report on (pick ‘em - Fox or MSNBC) about Ted Cruz or Governor Cuomo.”  If I am convincing, my friends might tune in tonight to see what the coverage is.

The political networks WANT you to get upset with those of different political orientations. They want you to be emotional - they want you to be yelling “Throw the bums out” when talking of the opposition party.  They want you to “throw the first stone” when killing the woman caught in adultery.

The reality is that YOU can’t change any of the stories.  I can only change ONE person - myself.  If Governor Cuomo really intentionally hurt COVID victims by his inaccurate reporting - that may or may not be noteworthy.  To be honest, I doubt that Governor Cuomo made this up.  He got his information from various sources and aides.  Now, he may have covered up the data - and the question is did he do it intentionally - with malice in his thoughts? Did one of his cabinet or staff hide the data?  And, what do the political networks want to do?  One side wants to PAINT him as wrong, as evil, as a tyrant.  (Did you read the novel 1984 - George Orwell described a TWO-MINUTE Hate - where the people are encouraged to hate and scream at the other side.)

Was President Trump really a super evil man?  Was he the new version of Hitler?  Was he demon-possessed?  (Somehow I doubt it).  But, one side wants to paint him as the (current) worst villain in the United States).

And, likewise, now President Biden is depicted as an evil (or stupid) man.  He is systematically undoing the wonderful things his predecessor did.

Did Senator Cruz commit a mistake in judgment when he took a family vacation to Mexico in the middle of a pandemic and the worst week of weather this winter? I hope he and his family had a good trip!! I don’t know and may never know.

-AND DOES IT REALLY MATTER IN THE BIG SCHEME OF THINGS???  (probably not)

- AND WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?  (nothing)

Over time, I’ve written about “walking a mile in their shoes”.  I’ve made enough mistakes and I know that others make mistakes too.  How about forgiveness?  Is that still in vogue?

I have a preference that public officials (either party) if they really have made a mistake can fess up and admit it.  Two days ago, I talked of King David of Israel lusting after Bathsheeba.  And then standing up publicly and saying, “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight,”

My education says “Follow the Money” - and, political commentators are “entertainers” and invoke people to watch their programs - and see their advertisements - and maybe somebody will buy the products!!!  And they are BRASH, and IN-YOUR-FACE and they get a loyal following.

So my two friends have made their determination. And, of course, my guess is that A voted for Donald Trump in the last election and B voted for Joe Biden.  And, I’m pretty sure that A still has his Trump bumper sticker up - and proclaims that the “election was stolen”.  And, I’m pretty sure that B still has her Biden bumper sticker on her car.  (And, the ‘hate’ continues)

I have suggested that we are in an (un-) CIVIL WAR - we like to judge and cut down the statements, opinions of our enemies.  I also say LOVE WINS.

“Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.”  Ephesians 4:2 NLT

“For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” 1 John 3:11

‘

“Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness.” (1 John 2:9)

“All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them.  (1 John 3:15)

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for ALL PEOPLE. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.: 1 Timothy 2:1-2

I sense we are NOT being fair with each other - THAT WE WANT TO HATE OTHERS.  I like Dorothy Day’s quote “I can only love God as much as the person I love the least”.  My personal belief is that ‘hate’ robs you of God’s love.

And, a quote from Carl Jung, Swiss psychologist, and philosopher - "Thinking is difficult, that is why most people judge".

I am trying (hard) to NOT HATE anybody; I am trying (hard) to LOVE everybody.

And for my friends A and B - I love you both.  I LOVE YOU BOTH!!!  You both are “made in the image and likeness of God”.

LOVE WINS!!!

WEDNESDAY MARCH 3, 2021 - MEDIA / ENTERTAINMENT

 WEDNESDAY MARCH 3, 2021 - MEDIA / ENTERTAINMENT

I started this week looking at the growth of media. With the internet, there is an abundance of television channels, blogs, forums, discussions, groups, and opinions.  Then there is the multitude of streaming channels - Netflix, Roku, Hulu, Disney, Discovery, Peacock (NBC), and many others.  Space is filling up.  (As you know I don’t have television, so I’m not even sure what is out there!!)

Back to our basic definitions of entertainment is:

the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment. "everyone just sits in front of the TV for entertainment"

Yes - there are many options for our entertainment dollar.  (Many before COVID).  Let’s say you have $300 a month for entertainment - you can have cable television, go to some movies, stream some content, go to sporting events, or … (gasp) entertain yourself!!!  You could play bridge, dance, hike, run, play tennis or many other options for YOUR entertainment.  [Note, you don’t have to be a “couch potato”!!.

Entertainment - what do you like?  How much are you willing to pay for it?  Is $20 for a movie ticket too high?  Is $5 for a ticket too low?  How much would you pay for a SuperBowl Ticket?

I want to stick with television for today and tomorrow.

“FOLLOW THE MONEY”

Back to the money argument.  The higher the number of viewers, the larger the ratings, the higher the rations, the most the network can charge for advertising and the advertisers like that as they are reaching more people.

Now - to my political point (can I do this?)

It seems like the election and our county - we are in a CIVIL WAR - and it is being influenced by the media.  I’m using FoxNews and MSNBC for my examples today.

So Fox or MSNBC need sponsors to pay for ads, and they have money to pay their bills - and their owners get a return on their money.  Of course, television channels get revenue based on viewership.  The more viewers, the more the channel can charge for advertisement spots.

In recent years, political pundits have tried to be more outlandish - “DID YOU HEAR WHAT GOVERNOR XYZ DID?”  WATCH OUR EXCLUSIVE VIDEO OF TED CRUZ’S TRIP TO CANCUN”: The bigger the name, the bigger the headlines, the bigger the impact on viewers, the better the ratings!!

The intent is to gain more viewers - and being “blah” doesn’t do it”.  Over the years, weathermen wore bold and crazy ties.  I know of a weatherman that had listeners send in their crazy ties for him (and he, of course, mentioned them on the air!!).  I remember a newsman that had kind of a monotone delivery - and didn’t attract many viewers.

So, how do you attract more viewers and how do you get their eyeballs glued to your programming, and pouring all those advertisements into your ears?

My opinion is that BOLD, BRASH, IN-YOUR-FACE gets viewers.

Sports teams have fans.  The term fans is short for “fanatics”.  Sports teams love fans - that dress up in the team’s uniforms, go to the games (and pay the admission price), buy $10 hot dogs, and $8 cups of beer.  The bigger the fan base, the larger the attendance at games, and the larger the television viewing audience - and the more income - to pay higher prices for players. (Note, the New York Yankees have done this well).

Did you ever watch professional wrestlers?  Now there is an act.  When the camera is on, they are berating their opponents. With Muhammud Ali, he had poems “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”

At some point a while back, I heard somebody mention FoxNews and MSNBC as ENTERTAINMENT media outlets!!!

And, MS-NBC and FoxNews do keep their viewers (or their FANS).  And, that keeps their income! RATINGS, RATINGS, RATINGS.

To me, it is a balancing of innuendo and news. A commentator can bring up a topic “Today <Representative ABC> did<XYZ>.  Then the commentator brings in an “expert” on that subject.  Experts come from both sides.  Let’s say the issue is Russia - you can have Pro-Russia experts and anti-Russia experts.  And, these experts will be exciting, in-your-face - and make sure we know that representative ABC did a terrible thing - that can really undermine all of America; or that Representative ABC  did an excellent thing - that can lead to lasting peace and prosperity.

The program is very entertaining - maybe you can have experts on both sides - yelling at each other (like boxers just to do).  Again, entertainment.

For entertainment value, it seems to me like FoxNews and MSNBC really like vilifying the Democrats or Republicans (depending on the focus).  In the past four years, Donald Trump has been the evil person (at least on MSNBC) and Nancy Pelosi has been the evil person (at least on FoxNews) - and it is great entertainment.

Now, you can find fault with almost anybody for almost anything.  Yes, you can find fault with me (for a lot of things!!!)  A FAN loves his/her team; a FAN loves his/her political views; a FAN can get rabid about their views.

When I lived in Connecticut, the BIG rivalry was the New York Yankees against the Boston Red Sox.  Call-in sports shows (another type of entertainment) would love or hate their team (or the coach, or particular players).

*****

My education says “Follow the Money” - and, political commentators are “entertainers” and invoke people to watch their programs - and see their advertisements - and maybe somebody will buy the products!!!

(Tongue-in-cheek) I used to tell my students they needed to learn to point their fingers.  In that case, they could point at the hardware (we need more hardware, this is too slow to keep up); or the network/infrastructure (our network let us down AGAIN); programmers (obviously there is a flaw in the application programming); and even other countries (China/North Korea/Russia have been hacking our systems).

So, time for a perspective:

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.  Ephesians 4:2

Bible Gateway Matthew 7. "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

Ten days ago was Washington’s Birthday.  George Washington advised American citizens to view themselves as a cohesive unit and avoid political parties and issued a special warning to be wary of attachments and entanglements with other nations.  Obviously, we have not followed his warning!!

And, walk a mile in their shoes!!!

More tomorrow.

LOVE WINS!!!

HUGS!!

Growing up, there were about four television stations in Cedar Rapids Iowa.  We didn’t have cable (I’m not sure it even existed), there were no streaming channels like Netflix - to today - with hundreds of channels and options.  I went from about three local radio stations (then) to thousands (now - including a plethora online).  And, almost all of them need money to pay staff, to pay for broadcasting facilities.  Some (like public radio) do use more public buildings.  KUT is the local National Public Radio station for central Texas - and has facilities at the University of Texas (UT).  If I believe in what I hear on Public Radio there are fund-raisers for patrons to support the station - and advertising that isn’t quite the same as regular radio advertising.

My son (our son) is a television reporter for KHGI in Grand Island Nebraska.  Recent ratings show this:

KETV - Omaha - 1,855,582

KOLN - Lincoln - 1,596,566

WOWT- Omaha - 1,304,613

KLKN - Lincoln - 437,554

KHGI - Kearney - 323,090 ←--

KMTV - Omaha - 236731

KSNB - Hastings - 197,916 ←--

In his Central Nebraska region, his station (KHGI)  is rated about 1.5 as much as the Hastings station, so therefore, advertising costs will be higher on KHGI as compared to KSNB.

I don’t know this (and have not even discussed it), I have no idea how much my son gets paid, but, in theory, for his market, it could be (maybe) 1.5 as much as a comparable reporter for the competitive station.

Now, my son works a lot more than Joe Buck (sports announcer who makes about $6 million a year), but my son gets a lot less.  That’s just the way the market works.  And, my son loves his work and loves his location.  In his market, he is a “big fish in a small pond”.  (Note, “Love what you do, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life” - Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens)

There is also an expression “Follow the money”.  Obviously, some people make a lot of money - and others not so much.  And, we shouldn’t work just for the money.

In the Media work, generally the bigger the market, the better the salary.  Of course, this might not always be true.  A janitor at ABC in New York and a janitor at KHGI in Grand Island Nebraska might not have a large difference in salary - although the cost of living is probably higher in New York City.

With a larger location, the pressure might be more in terms of media.  The Governor of New York and a Senator from Texas were recently in the news for some decisions they made.  But, if you will, if the Governor of North Dakota and a Senator from North Dakota made similar decisions, they probably wouldn’t get the same scrutiny.

My local stations have 5 to 15-second promo for their news programs - they have just enough to pique my interest.  I might have “We get to the bottom of the energy crisis in Texas”; “Tune in tonight as we expose why Texans are being cheated out of their vaccines”.

I note the language - “exposed” “cheated”, “crisis”.  To get higher rations you need to get more viewers and to get more viewers you need to CAPTURE their attention.

Television is entertainment.

While you might not accept “entertainment” for some of the topics.  Are soap operas “entertainment”? Is “The Bachelor” entertainment?  Who will he select, who will be kicked off?  A friend loves “The Voice” - and likes the tension between the celebrities who select who goes on to the next round - and regularly calls in her ‘vote’ when the audience can vote.

IT IS ENTERTAINMENT - it keeps people’s interest.

Let’s look at entertainment.  At the end of most televised sporting events, there is a statement “for the entertainment value of our viewers.”  Television is primarily for entertainment.  People watch football games for “entertainment” - it isn’t work-related - nobody is making you watch the Super Bowl - but you watch it (until it got so out-of-hand this year) because you want to watch it - because it is entertaining.

One of the definitions of entertainment is:

the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment. If you will: "everyone just sits in front of the TV for entertainment"

Television is a business - a BIG business.  Businesses have to make money - they have to pay staff, pay for airtime.  So sports programs have advertisements for things that appeal to sports fans - beer, cars (especially trucks), and similar ads.

Televised sports are a business.  The University of Nebraska left the Big Twelve Athletic Conference for the Big Ten Conference - for MONEY.  (In the Big Twelve, the University of Texas created their own network - the Longhorn Network - and didn’t share revenue from their programs (mostly football), but in the Big Ten the schools share the television revenue.  If Ohio State goes to the National Championship Football game, Northwestern University in the Chicago area gets a cut.  And, if Northwestern University goes to the Sun Bowl in El Paso Texas, Ohio State gets a cut.

So, college sports (and especially football) bring revenue into the sports programs.  A friend used to be the cross-country coach at Nebraska.  Cross Country does not generate revenue.  It has expenses - coaches, travel to events, and more.  BUT - Nebraska football brings in the revenue to pay for those minor sports.

ENTERTAINMENT - and frequently - TELEVISED ENTERTAINMENT attracts viewers, and affects the ratings - and ratings mean more revenue.
