SUNDAY FUNDAY - AUGUST 14, 2022

SUNDAY FUNDAY AUGUST 14, 2022

AUGUST IN HER GLORY!!!

Here we are - the second week of August - back to school time!!!

It seems like years ago, school either started after Labor Day or the last week of August, not the second week.  At one point, South Dakota (when I lived there), actually mandated that school start after Labor Day.  The rationale was that much of the state is rural and agricultural and not starting until after Labor Day allowed farm kids to go to the state fair and show off their projects and animals.

But, that has changed.  Maybe it is partially due to sports.  How can you get a full football season if you don’t start playing until after Labor Day?  (Again, thinking of states like South Dakota where winter can come in November).  Do you want your marching band to trudge through snowflakes for their halftime show?

As a band kid, we started having morning drills for marching band in early August.  I was fortunate as I gave up marching with a huge heavy Sousaphone and I was a drum major!!!  I’m not sure that was quite an even exchange.  I remember marching in a parade and (a) my drum major baton - which was wrapped in decorative cord - started to unravel in the middle of the parade route, and (b) the tall fur hat caused me to sweat profusely!!!   As I reflect, I was a lousy drum major.  I didn’t strut and I wasn’t flashy.  Today drum majors go to summer camps for drum majors to really put on a show!!

Are some in your family going back to school?

(Aside, my grand nephew - my sister’s grandson - is marching for the Woodlands High School band this fall. She says there are something like 600 kids in the band and some 200 color guard people!!  That’s hard for me to picture!!!)

But, with school starting, football season is starting.  Your favorite college teams will be playing on television soon, and your favorite professional teams as well.

I went to an NCAA Division II college and it was never on television for football.  I taught at an NAIA athletic school (much too small to be NCAA) and their games were never televised.

But, I love watching football.  (Maybe I’ll have to get a television set!!!)

Did you start school before Labor Day?

TECHNOLOGY JOKES

Why are iPhone chargers not called Apple Juice?!

How does a computer get drunk? It takes screenshots.

Why did the band 1023 Megabytes split up? They couldn’t get a gig.

Why did the PowerPoint presentation cross the road? To get to the other slide.

Dad, what are clouds made of?  Linux servers, mostly.

What was the computer’s favorite snack? Microchips, memory sticks, and cookies. But just a few bytes of each.

Why was the computer late for work? It had a hard drive.

As technology gets lighter, thinner, and faster...People get heavier, thicker, and slower.

ELEPHANT JOKES

Why don't elephants drink martinis? Have you ever tried to get an olive out of your nose?

What time is it when an elephant sits on your fence? Time to get a new fence.

How can you tell if an elephant is hiding under your bed? Your nose is pressed against the ceiling.

Why do elephants have trunks? So they have somewhere to hide when they see a mouse.

What is really big, green and has a trunk? An elephant that isn't ripe yet.

How come you don't ever see elephants hiding in trees? Because they're excellent at it

Why is it not advisable to walk in the jungle between 6pm and 7pm?  Because that is when all of the elephants get out of the trees.

How come there are still pygmies in the jungle?  Because they walked through the jungle between five and six

LEGO TRIVIA

Last week was Lego Group’s 90th birthday

Some Lego facts:

Lego manufactures more tires than any other company. In 2012, it said that nearly half of its sets include a wheel of some sort.

Lego bricks are universal. A brick you buy now will interlock with the one you have laying around from 1958.

Six 2x4 Lego bricks can be combined in 915,103,765 different ways. If you ever get bored…

*****

In honor of Lego’s 90th birthday, here are descriptions of some of its sets, and you have to guess the set.

  1. “And (you won’t believe this), it can do the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs!”

  2. “A mere two millennia after the original was built…this incredible model is packed with fascinating details worthy of the most iconic amphitheater in history.”

  3. “It contains 5,923 pieces and is over 16 inches tall thanks to the stunningly rendered central dome. Who said mausoleums had to be depressing…?”

  4. “Packed with authentic details, inside and out, the set honors the original ship featuring a grand staircase, a boiler room, different cabins, and lifeboats. and even the first-class dining room.”

Answers:
1. Millennium Falcon
2. Colosseum
3. Taj Mahal
4. Titanic

NATIONAL DAYS

August 14 - BIRTHDAYS

Magic Johnson - basketball player

Halle Berry - Actress

August 15 - National Jean Day

Jeans weren’t “in” when I went to school (or, maybe they were and I missed out - not unusual - I was (and still am) a bit of a Space Cadet!!)

By the time my children were in middle school, jeans were big - and, in particular in my daughter’s class, they “HAD TO” be the right brand!!  Fortunately, my daughter wasn’t picky and wore jeans that fit well but weren’t the “cool” brands.

August 16 - National Roller Coaster Day (nationaltoday.com)

I think I would have loved Roller Coasters more but we didn’t live too close to any major amusement parks when I was growing up.  And, when our children were growing up, living in South Dakota was also a determent.  Even when we went to the All Iowa Fair (or the Iowa State Fair), my mother (noted for being frugal) maybe - just maybe - allowed us one ride in the midway area.  (But, we did get to the cow and pig barns!!!)

Did you grow up with Roller Coasters?

August 17 National Baby Boomer’s Day

Yes, some of us are “Baby Boomers”.  “Baby boomers (1946 – 1964), or simply ‘boomers,’ refers to the demographic born after the Silent Generation (1928 – 1945) and before Generation X (1965 – 1980). This generation, which is now between the ages of 57 and 75, represents those born during the post-World War II baby boom.”

I’m in the early baby boomer group.  (age 75 in two weeks).  My sister is three years older and would have been in the Silent Generation.

In Cedar Rapids Iowa (where I grew up), it seemed like everything was booming.  They built new schools, new roads, and new shopping areas.  I remember in the middle of the boomers going to the big “Cedar Hills” subdivision and seeing all the “cookie cutter” houses.

Pete Seegar, Joan Baez (and others) sang “Little Boxes”:

Little boxes on the hillside

Little boxes made of ticky tacky

Little boxes

Little boxes

Little boxes all the same

There's a green one and a pink one

And a blue one and a yellow one

And they're all made out of ticky tacky

And they all look just the same

(And, even some of our current new developments do have houses that look the same.)

August 18 - NATIONAL FAJITA DAY - August 18, 2022 - National Today

To me, the measure of a TexMex restaurant is how they do their fajita.  Did they cook their own chicken (that is, is it from a can, or is it home-cooked, irregular in size and shape)?  How many onions and peppers did they use?  Are there refried beans? What else comes with it? (I had fajitas recently with mushrooms - not standard for me!!!)

KOOL-AID DAY - August 19, 2022 - National Today

Did you know Hastings Nebraska is the birthplace of Kool-Aid? That wonderfully sweet flavored soft drink that kids (of all ages!) enjoy was the brainchild of Edwin Perkins. You see, Perkins had a dream to become a self-employed business success – and he discovered his dream through hard work and a little ingenious marketing. Perkins created and sold many products, but in 1927 while in Hastings, he developed Kool-Aid, and the rest is history!  [Hastings is in central Nebraska - about 150 miles west of Omaha]

(My Nebraska family will probably be at Kool-Aid Days in Hasting this weekend!!!)

INTERNATIONAL HOMELESS ANIMALS DAY - August 20, 2022 - National Today

I think some of you have adopted homeless pets from the shelter!!!  If so, enjoy this day!!!

WRAP-UP

Summer is slowly dying down.  In a week, sunrise will be after 7:00 a.m. The ten-day forecast has high temperatures in the 90s - not 100s (but don’t count them out yet!!!)  There even is a CHANCE OF RAIN!!!!!!

I know some of you have trips and family vacations coming up.  Enjoy your time!!!  Do something memorable!!!  Get out of your comfort zone!!

Let LOVE WIN!!!
