WARM-UP

Winter has returned. We’ve had quite an ice storm.  Many of you are picking up limbs and branches.  Some might still be without power.  But, it looks like warmer weather is ahead!!!

*****

Most of us have lived in other places - and there are trade-offs.  This time of year I can (generally) kid my friends up north with questions like “How cold is it”, and “How much snow did you get”; and in August they asked me, “How many days over 100 degrees have you had?”

SPECIAL DAYS

Last Thursday was Groundhog’s Day.  This comes from a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den, and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.

And, of course, when I think of Groundhog’s Day, I remember the movie with Bill Murray where he wakes up in Punxsutawney  Pennsylvania over and over again.  (With “I’ve got you Babe” with Sonny and Cher playing on the radio).

It seems to be an “Old Wives Tale” that a groundhog can predict the weather.  I’ve heard things like if fuzzy caterpillars have more “fuzz” in the fall it will be a colder winter.

“National Wear Red Day was Friday, February 3, 2023.

Friday is “Wear Red” day.  The most significant cause of death for most Americans is heart disease.  Yes, cancer, car accidents, and related causes of death are out there, but heart diseases are number #1.  In particular, “Wear Red Day” is primarily for women to be aware of heart disease.  (But, heart disease is also the number 1 killer of men as well).  February is also Heart Disease awareness MONTH.

Keep your blood pressure under control, keep your weight under control, watch your cholesterol, exercise, and be “heart smart”.
