SUNDAY FUNDAY - SUPER BOWL - 2023

 SUNDAY FUNDAY - FEBRUARY 12, 2023

THE SUPER BOWL IS TODAY!!!

Ah yes, the annual football game between the winner of the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference.  Super Bowl Sunday is second only to Thanksgiving in terms of the quantity of food Americans consume.

I love American Football (not to be confused with what the rest of the world knows as “football” (or fuitbol)).  Yes, there are very few things that happen with “feet” (plural of “foot”) in American “FOOTball”.  And, yes, I will be watching at least part of the game (I work today from 2:30 to 6:30).

While none of my “favorite” teams are in this year's Super Bowl, I’m cheering for Kansas City.

Now, some information about the Super Bowl:

FOOD:

Below is a list of Super Bowl food facts

  • 1.3 billion chicken wings will be consumed

  • 11.2 million pounds of potato chips will be smashed

  • 139.4 million pounds of avocados will be purchased

  • 3.8 million pounds of popcorn will be made

  • 3 million pounds of nuts will be consumed

  • 325.5 million gallons of beer will be consumed

  • 2.37 million will be spent on soda

  • 12.5 million pounds of bacon will be consumed

  • 10 million pounds of ribs will be consumed

  • 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips will be eaten

So, just how many pizzas get eaten on Super Bowl Sunday? According to The American Pizza Community, more than 12.5 million pizzas are ordered for the big game. Dominos alone sells 11 million slices of pizza on Super Bowl Sunday, and in 2021, Pizza Hut reported selling more than 1.4 million pizzas the same day

Advertising is up to $7 million for a 30-second spot.

The best ads (as picked by some expert way before the game) are these:

Rakuten: Alicia Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher in the 90s rom-com Clueless for this spot.

Miller Lite and Coors Light: The two iconic beer brands will face off against each other in one Super Bowl commercial—and fans can make prop bets about the spot on DraftKings.

Sam Adams: “Your Cousin From Boston” enters an imaginary world where Beantown is happy, featuring a cameo from former Celtics player Kevin Garnett.

Planters: Mr. Peanut will get roasted (not literally) by comedian Jeff Ross.

Squarespace: Oscar and Emmy-nominated actor Adam Driver stars in a spot for the website company with a handful of other Adam Drivers; in a behind-the-scenes video from the set, the clones goof around on set and eat lunch together.

Busch Beer: Sarah McLachlan spoofs her long-running animal cruelty prevention commercials in this beer ad, set to her heartbreaking song “Angel.”

Workday: This first-time Super Bowl advertiser will air a one-minute spot in the game’s third quarter featuring Joan Jett, Ozzy Osbourne and Gary Clark Jr., and other musical acts, according to Variety; in a teaser clip, Osbourne tries his hand at office work in a cubicle.

Budweiser: In a teaser clip, the beer company hinted toward an appearance from Kevin Bacon, riffing on the “six degrees from Kevin Bacon” lore that has long surrounded the actor.

Michelob Ultra: Serena Williams and Brian Cox riff on the ‘80s movie Caddyshack in a series of commercials for the beer brand.

Heineken: After starring in a Lay’s chips commercial last year, Paul Rudd appears as Ant-Man in an ad for non-alcoholic Heineken.FanDuel: Former Patriots star Rob Gronkowski is going to kick a field goal—the “kick of destiny”—live during the big game, and if he hits it, fans who bet using the service can win some cash.

Doritos: Jack Harlow gets involved in a “love triangle” with these pointy chips.

Downy: The detergent brand is keeping its spokesperson’s identity hidden until the big game.

(It seems like there are a lot of beer commercials?)

And, if you haven’t heard - the two teams will be the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.  Andy Reid, the Kansas City Chiefs coach, coached the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl;  Jason Kelce (Philadelphia) and Travis Kelce (Kansas City)  will make NFL history on Feb. 12 when they become the first brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are the first two Black quarterbacks to start in the same Super Bowl.  Mahomes played at Texas Tech University

A single premium seat inside the State Farm Stadium for the game costs between $5,592 and $33,144.

    *****

I hope it is an entertaining game - and worthy of the name “SUPER” Bowl!!

    *****
    LOVE WINS!!
