TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 2023 FICTION

 TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 2023 - FICTION

According to National Today, today is National Science Fiction Day.  I did want to highlight all fiction.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FICTION DAY - January 2, 2024

From childhood on, I’ve been a reader. For me, reading is fundamental. Reading is intrinsic.  I like to read.  Maybe this was mainly related to less media (less television, fewer computers, fewer iPhones).

I remember days as a child when I read until I finished a book.  I went to the Cedar Rapids Public Library faithfully (at least once a week).  I always read in the summer reading program until I got the prizes.  I’ve mentioned before that one summer, one of the prizes was a 1-inch by 1-inch piece of land in Alaska.  I’m not sure if I did “own” that property - but it impacted me.  I graduated to the “upstairs” adult library and read even more.

I could also get classical records, which started my classical music love)—good old 33 ⅓ long-play records.  I’ll admit I judged books by their covers and by the authors.  There was a Tchaikovsky Seventh Symphony album.  Somehow, I knew that Tchaikovsky only had six symphonies. (Note - the seventh symphony adapted the third Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto - and sounds very much like it was a real symphony.)

I read fiction.  I read James Michener's novels - LONG books.  I read Ayn Rand (my high school English teacher told me NOT to read Ayn Rand - so I did).

I read Science Fiction (Isaac Asimov and others).  That led me to fantasy novels.  I’ve read Dune and several of the books that followed the first Dune.  I liked The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the others in that series.

In recent years, I’ve read James Reacher, David Baldacci, Lee Child (“Jack Reacher”), Clyde Cussler, and others.  I’ve found that I like audiobooks while I walk. I’ve backed off those authors - because there are so many deaths, killings, and evil. I liked Lessons in Chemistry and Kristin Hannah's novels.

I have read some non-fiction - and like Malcolm Gladwell.

If you have ideas for a good fiction book - let me know.  (I downloaded a Baldacci juvenile book for my week of dog sitting.  It’s okay - and partially science fiction, too!!!)
