MONDAY, MAY 27, 2024 - MEMORIAL DAY
I AM ON A TRIP.
Yesterday, I left Georgetown, Texas, drove to Palo Duro State Park (Canyon), and then stopped inn Lubbock for the night.
Palo Duro is billed as the second-longest canyon in the United States. I have been through the Columbia River Gorge (not long, but very scenic), and I will be visiting the Grand Canyon next week. I am still determining how this canyon will compare.
Today, I’m heading to Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico.
Some years ago, we lived near Mount Hood (the high point of Oregon) and visited Mount Hood but did not go to the summit.
SO:
Mount Hood in Oregon
Black Elk Peak in South Dakota (and hiked it)
Hawkeye Point in Iowa (in a farmer’s field)
Mount Frissell in Connecticut - the high point, but the actual peak of Mount Frissell is just across the border in Massachusetts (and hiked it)
Mount Greylock - the highest point in Massachusetts (didn’t hike it)
Jerimoth Hill - the high point in Rhode Island (just off the road - (no big deal)
High Point, New Jersey (just off of Interstate 84 - we crossed by this on our trips west and east
Charles Mound, Illinois - on private property - but open on the first weekend of June, July, and August
Mount Magazine in Arkansas - a pretty nice park - excellent roads, and a short hike
Black Mesa, Oklahoma - I camped at Black Mesa State Park - a “dark” park and the night sky and stars were fantastic)
Mount Sunflower in Kansas- maybe my easiest high point - just a few inches taller than the rest of the prairie state
Panarama Point, Nebraska - also on private property - in the high plains of western Nebraska. (Buffalo do roam here!!!)
Guadalupe Peak, Texas - I walked on the trail for a while, but didn’t go to the top.
On this trip, I hope to get to
Wheeler Peak in New Mexico
Humphrey Peak in Arizona
Mount Elbert in Colorado (second high-point in the lower 48 - Mount Whitney in California is higher, and Denali in Alaska is the highest in the United States and North America
