SUNDAY FUNDAY JUNE 6, 2021

 SUNDAY FUNDAY JUNE 6, 2021

IT IS JUNE!!

Here it is - the Sixth Month of the year.  The start of Logical Summer (June, July, and August), and official Summer starts on June 20th (“the longest day”).

It is the month of Father’s Day, it may be an anniversary month for some of you as well.

NATIONAL MONTH

National Dairy Month

I remember the “GOT MILK” ads - complete with milk mustaches.  I was doing some reading about the downturn in milk sales - almond milk, soy milk, oatmeal milk, coconut milk and more.

National Zoo and Aquarium Month

When I was in Houston for my surgery, on the day prior to the surgery, my friend and I went to the Houston Zoo.  I like zoos, and am amazed at the number of animals in the world.

National Men’s Health Month

Guys - do keep your check-ups going

National Candy Month

I like candy, but I don’t overdo it.  For me, ‘real’ candy involves chocolate!!

National Camping Month

I’m not ready to go back to a tent and a sleeping bag camping experience, but I do remember my experiences.  One story, my college son and I drove the seven hours to the Black Hills to go camping for a weekend - and then not having a pump to fill out air mattresses.  I think we spent most of the night inflating them to sleep on the rocky ground!!!

National Great Outdoors Month

With the previous note, I enjoy being outside

National Homeowners Month

Summer seems to be the time to make a move.  For families with children, the kids are out of school and moves are natural.  As a professor, all of my moves were in the summer.

National Iced Tea Month

I like iced tea.  I like unsweetened, no lemon, and generally weak tea.  Most days I have three containers in my refrigerator for ice tea.  I used to make ‘sun tea’ until experts suggested that it could cause cancer.

National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month

Yes, as summer gets here, we can get fresh fruit and vegetables.  Enjoy!!  A few times (now moving into the ‘dark ages”), we used to can tomatoes and other vegetables.

And, …

National Accordion Month!!

The story is that when a person gets to heaven, they get a harp; and when they get to hello, they get an accordion!!!

JOKES AND RIDDLES - ANSWERS AT END

Q: What can you hold in your left hand but not in your right?

Q: What is black when it’s clean and white when it’s dirty?

Q: What gets bigger when more is taken away?

Q: I’m light as a feather, yet the strongest person can’t hold me for five minutes. What am I?

Q: I’m found in socks, scarves and mittens; and often in the paws of playful kittens. What am I?

Q: Where does today come before yesterday?

Q: What invention lets you look right through a wall?

Q: If you’ve got me, you want to share me; if you share me, you haven’t kept me. What am I?

STORY (you may have heard this, but it is worth repeating)

Many years ago, on a little island, lived a bunch of happy people. They loved their friendly little island with its beautiful trees, water, and sand. The islanders had a special tradition of trading warm fuzzies with each other. Warm fuzzies were like little balls of pure love that made everyone feel good all over. People would offer warm fuzzies freely, and if you needed one all you had to do was ask. Even people you didn’t know would reach into their pockets and pull out a warm fuzzy, and just give it to you! Every warm fuzzy was like a big hug from a friend. And there were always plenty of warm fuzzies to go around. Everyone felt safe and loved and they all helped each other to feel safe and loved.

But one day a grouchy, grumbly, mumbly tourist came to visit the island. He didn’t understand what everyone was doing but he was sure he didn’t like it. He kept cold prickles in his pockets and warm fuzzies didn’t make any sense to him. So he decided that he would tell a lie to the islanders, to convince them to stop with all that warm fuzzy business. The grouchy tourist told the islanders that their warm fuzzies were the most precious things in the world. He told them that instead of sharing them, they should be keeping them. What if the world supply of warm fuzzies ran out? What would they do then? All of a sudden the islanders began worrying and acting selfishly, keeping their warm fuzzies to themselves. And a funny thing happened. When people stopped sharing their warm fuzzies, people stopped receiving warm fuzzies. Instead of everyone feeling warm and fuzzy inside, they started to feel cold and prickly inside. This made everyone kind of sad, everyone except for that grouchy tourist that is.

Thank goodness something nice happened next. You see, one of the islanders had left for college. She came home to visit and brought her warm fuzzies with her. When she arrived home, she started giving warm fuzzies to everyone she saw. The islanders started to realize what they were missing and that they had made a mistake. Holding onto their warm fuzzies didn’t make them happier, it made them miserable. They figured out that giving their warm fuzzies away not only made their friends happy, it made them happy too. The good news is that we can be just like those islanders! We can give warm fuzzies, like these cute little pom-poms.

But we can also give warm fuzzies that are sparkly, little, fluffy, imaginary balls of happy. You see, when we offer a kind word or help someone to feel better, that’s the best kind of warm fuzzy there is.

(And, a related pun.  There is a country in the South Pacific where oil was discovered, and every one is rich.  The benevolent leader bought everybody a pink Cadillac.  So, yes, it is a “PINK CAR NATION”. )

MORE DATES:

June 3rd - National Egg Day

I almost always have eggs on hand.  I can be fussy about my breakfast egg - two eggs over hard.

When I went to college, on my first breakfast in the dorm cafeteria, the server asked how I wanted my eggs.  I didn’t have a ready answer, so I said ‘one hard and one soft’, so for four years that is how I had my breakfast.  (And, that server became a friend and would light up when I got into line)

June 4th  - National Cheese Day

I am also kind of a curmudgeon with cheese.  American cheese please!!!  (I know some people think that isn’t really cheese - but).  I’ll tolerate most cheeses.  I’ve gotten to like some feta cheese on salads, and cheddar cheese on hamburgers.  My grandfather ate (smelly) limburger cheese.  I’m not sure if he liked it - or if it was just a way to be ‘unique’!!

June 6th - D-Day

While I was in Houston, I watched “Saving Private Ryan”.  The first scenes of coming ashore and the deaths seemed so real.  In my regular blog (http::/karens2019.blogspot.com) I wrote about Memorial Day last Monday, and the concept “War is Hell”. Thank you to those that served!!!

June 7th - National Chocolate Ice Cream Day

While I love chocolate, I tend to go with vanilla ice cream (or cookies and creme).

June 10th - National Iced Tea Day - to go with National Iced Tea Month.

I think some of you are more used to sweetened tea, and to also have lemon slices.

WRAP-UP

We’d had some good rains - which means that friends who go boating (or kayaking) have water.  Likewise, our gardens and yards should be able to grow.

I’m still shifting gears into summer mode.  Time to get outside
