Hey, it is Sunday!!!  Let us do some fun (or challenging?) things today!!


LOGIC PROBLEMS:  Answers at bottom


#1 You have a five gallon pail, and a three gallon pail (and a hose with an unlimited supply of water, and a huge water tank - that can hold up to 25 gallons.  How do you get exactly four gallons? 


** additional - could you get 1 gallon?  2 gallons, (3 and 5 are obvious), 6 gallons?  10 gallons? 


#2 You have two strings whose only known property is that when you light one end of either string it takes exactly one hour to burn. The rate at which the strings will burn is completely random and each string is different.


(Note - this is NOT intuitive!!!  Hint - light the first string at both ends.  How long would it take to burn? )


#3 Two friends decide to get together; so they start riding bikes towards each other. They plan to meet halfway. Each is riding at 6 MPH. They live 36 miles apart. One of them has a pet carrier pigeon and it starts flying the instant the friends start traveling. The pigeon flies back and forth at 18 MPH between the 2 friends until the friends meet.


How many miles does the pigeon fly?

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE DAY - September 12, 2021 | National Today


Okay, I like ice cream - and I like malts and shakes.  It seems like the only difference is the addition of malt powder).  As for flavor, there are many choices.  Last week my friend and I had milkshakes at the local Dairy Queen.  She had chocolate, and I had cherry (which had bits of real cherries in it).  Delicious.

I love my grandchildren.  (And, in less than a month all five of them will be the same age (again).  With twins (born in February 2013), and triplets (born in October 2013) they are almost the same age.  The twins are in third grade this year while the triplets are in second grade.


September 13 Positive Thinking Day

NATIONAL COLORING DAY - September 14, 2021 | National Today


I do like to color (when I make time).  I have a set of 64 colored pencils (which gives me almost any color), plus a set of 24 markers.  It is a good way to relax - put on some music, and be creative in my coloring.  I have plans - but just mental plans - of a large mural for my living room wall that I will color in.


September 15 YOM KIPPUR DAY

Otherwise known as the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day in Judaism. The holiday lasts approximately 25 hours and is typically observed with fasting and prayer in alignment with the themes of atonement and repentance. 


A great day to fast and reflect on your/my relationship with the Infinite God!!!


September 16 MAYFLOWER DAY - September 16, 2021 | National Today


It was 66 days for the Mayflower to reach American shores.  Quite the accomplishment for the year 1620.  Mayflower Day is celebrated on September 16 to reminisce about the history of the journey that set the precedent for the modern-day United States!


CONSTITUTION DAY - September 17, 2021 | National Today

‘Constitution Day, also known as Constitution and Citizenship Day, honors the document that guarantees Americans their essential rights. Since its ratification in 1787, the Constitution of the United States has served as the basis for all U.S. laws.’


Sometimes it seems amazing to me that over 200 years ago this country agreed on laws.  And, many decisions are based on determining if something is constitutional!!


BATMAN DAY - September 18, 2021

Batman is (at least to me) an interesting character.  Not like Superman, or Spiderman - who have special powers, Batman is a regular human being who fights crime against some unusual culprits.


As a college freshman, the Batman TV program was the “thing” to watch - Joker, Riddler, Penguin, etc with the graphics - POW, BOOM, etc.

By next week, we will have passed the fall (vernal) equinox - on September 20th.  We will officially be in fall.


But, more traditionally, we can consider June, July, and August as the summer months, and September, October, and November as the fall months, and December, January and February as the winter months, and March, April and May as the spring months.


The length of sunlight will be waning - the temperatures will be cooling off.  In central Texas, I’ve been opening the windows about 1:00 a.m. to let the cooler night breeze into my apartment.  The daytime temps have been about 95 yet this week - but after the upper 90s that is cooling off.

Fill the three gallon pail up - and dump it into the five gallon pail.  Refill the three gallon pail and again dump it into the five gallon pail.  The five gallon pail is now full and the three gallon pail now has one gallon left.  Dump the five gallon pail on the ground, dump the one gallon left in the five gallon pail.  Refill the three gallon pail and dump it into the five gallon pail - which will have exactly four gallons!!!

On string one - light both ends.  That will take thirty minutes to burn all the way through.  At the same start time, light ONE end of the second string.  When the first string is fully burnt up, the second string will be half-way burnt.  Light the other end of the second string - to get the last 15 minutes!!!

How many miles does the pigeon fly? 


The two friends will travel 18 miles each - or three hours at 6 miles per hour.  Therefore the pigeon will fly for three hours for a total of 54 miles!!!
