SUNDAY FUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 19, 2021

SUNDAY FUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 19, 2021

SOME QUOTES

If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more.  Roy T. Bennett

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style. Maya Angelou

WELCOME

Tomorrow is the Harvest Moon - September 20, 2021 (technically at 6:55 p.m.).  It is easier to see since sunset is 7:31 p.m. (Georgetown Texas times).  The moon will seem full today (Sunday, September 19th), Monday the 20th, and Tuesday the 21st.

And, of course, the Fall Equinox is on Wednesday, September 22nd at 2:21 p.m.

Meteorologists generally go with full moons for seasons - so Fall would be September, October, and November (which makes more sense to me).

I can already notice the change of seasons.  I am running my air conditioning less, I have my windows open more.  I can even drive in my car with the windows down (or partially down).

How about you?  Are you ready for fall?

Joke - a doctor asked me if I had a fall.  I told him I had three months of fall!!!

FALL EVENTS

Fall brings a lot of “pumpkin spice” recipes out.  Starbucks will sell pumpkin spice coffee, lattes, and more.  Halloween and Thanksgiving are the two big holidays of fall.  (Or, we can interchangeably call it “autumn”).  From my reading, the United Kingdom (aka “England”) calls this season Autumn and the United States calls it Fall.  (And, in German it is Herbst, and in Spanish it is Otono!!)  (See - reading this blog can make you smarter!!)

When I lived in Connecticut, I had to make at least one trip to Vermont/New Hampshire in the fall to see the colorful leaves.  (I also loved the covered bridges).  A beautiful part of our country!!!

Do you have some fall traditions?

SOME KID JOKES:

What do you call an artist who only draws fun pictures of cars? A car-toonist.

What do you call a cool rabbit? A hip-hopper.

What do you call a bear who got wet in the rain? A drizzly bear.

What do you call a joke without a punchline? Silence.

What do you call a pencil that is broken? Pointless.

What do you call a dinosaur who has an amazing vocabulary? A thesaurus.

What do you call an unfortunate cow who is stuck in an earthquake? A milkshake.

NATIONAL DAYS

TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY - September 19, 2021, | National Today

Arrgh - shiver me timbers.  If you don’t read all of these, I’ll make you walk the plank!!!

It has been a few years, but Krispy Kreme Donuts honored “Talk like a pirate day”.  If you went into Krispy Kremes and said Arrgh or something pirate-like you got a free donut.  BUT, if you were in a pirate costume, you could get a FREE dozen donuts!!!  Yes, and consumers killed a good idea.  I was visiting a friend in San Antonio and had my pirate hat, eye patch, and other appropriate clothes and went into a Krispy Kreme shop.  There was a family - mom, dad, and four keys - each in pirate outfits of some nature - and each getting a dozen donuts - so six dozen donuts to this family.  (A little greedy I thought).  Of course, why was I there - but to get a dozen donuts to share with my friend and his friends.  (He was a former college student of mine and was in the air force at one of the nearby bases - so he would have friends that would have gobbled up a donut!!!)

NATIONAL PEPPERONI PIZZA DAY - September 20, 2021, | National Today

There are generally a lot of events that can be highlighted on National Today - it seems like I highlight food days!!!  I like Pepperoni Pizza although I generally go more for a meat-lovers kind of pizza or a supreme - make sure you have green (or red) sweet peppers and onions on my pizza!!!

WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY - September 21, 2021, | National Today

My father, who lived to 97, had some dementia in his last years.  My mother-in-law had full-blown dementia/Alzheimers - and didn’t recognize any of her children or grandchildren.

I think some research suggests that using your brain (like playing bridge), being active, eating nutritiously, and getting enough sleep can mitigate some of the aspects of Alzheimer’s.

Fall Equinox: September 22, 2021

Be careful!!  I don’t want any of you to “fall”!!!

NATIONAL TEAL TALK DAY

This was a new one for me.

Let’s talk. September 23rd is Teal Talk Day and each year, over 249,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer worldwide. So, gather your friends, wear teal for a day out together and talk.

Invite your closest friends, neighbors, and sisters for drinks in the backyard. Wear your favorite teal and give the Teal Talk. Let them know early detection improves survival rates by 90%. Make sure they know the symptoms.

Persistent bloating

Lack of energy

Loss of appetite

Feeling fuller sooner.

During your Teal Talk, find more signs at Ovarcome.org.

(Karen adds:  More and more cancers can be solved.  Early diagnosis is generally key.  My friend who recently had tongue cancer surgery seemingly got it diagnosis in time before it had spread)

SEPTEMBER 24, 2021 - NATIONAL CHERRIES JUBILEE DAY!

On September 24th National Cherries Jubilee Day serves up a tasty dessert. Smitten with this simply elegant dessert, cherry lovers celebrate this sweet holiday with delight.

Instead, the chef poached the cherries in a simple syrup and poured warm brandy over them. Then just before serving, dramatically set the alcohol aflame.

(My comment - I do like cherries - and setting a dessert on fire is really dramatic!!!)

ONE-HIT WONDERS

I was looking for some other musical ideas to share and the concept of “One Hit Wonders” popped up.  As I was typing in the list my brain (and sometimes my mouth) were singing along.

"Tequila" — The Champs (1958)

"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" — The Tokens (1961)

"Hey! Baby" — Bruce Channel (1961)

"Monster Mash" — Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers (1962)

"Wipe Out" — The Surfaris (1963)

"96 Tears" — Question Mark and the Mysterians (1966)

'Harper Valley P.T.A’- Jeannie C. Riley,'(1968)

"Sugar, Sugar" — The Archies (1969)

"Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" — Steam (1969)

"Spirit in the Sky" — Norman Greenbaum (1970)

"It Never Rains In Southern California" — Albert Hammond (1972)

"Hooked on a Feeling" — Blue Swede (1974)

"Afternoon Delight" — Starland Vocal Band (1976)

I can sing parts (if not all) of the songs above - so they left a memory with me!!!  The Quinnipiac Pep Band always played Hey Baby (with the tuba getting the solo), and Tequila!!!  There were other songs that were one-hit wonders and I selected the ones I particularly liked or knew best.

Do you have favorites out of this list?  I couldn’t post all of the one-hit wonders - do you have favorites that didn’t get listed?

WRAP-UP

This looks like an interesting week for me.  I’m doing some tutoring/teaching starting this week.  Next Saturday is a Granny Basketball tournament in Oklahoma - plus the regular stuff.

(And, two days ago, our “Fire Ants” team scrimmaged against the Harker Heights “Old Glories” team.  We scrimmaged them at the Georgetown Rec Center about a month ago (and I scored two points).  I scored 18 points in this second match-up.  The logic seems to be “get the ball to the tall lady in the lane” and let her score”.  I even sat out most of the second half.)

The days are forecasted to still be hot (in the 90s and even some 100-degree temperatures.  But, the nights are getting longer (with fall arrival) and it is cooler in the evenings.

Love does win - stay the course, love everybody, hate is not allowed!!!

Karen
