 SUNDAY FUNDAY

MARCH 6, 2022

WARM-UP

Before we get started - just a reminder that next Sunday will start daylight savings time.

There is some talk of year around daylight saving time:

“"In the last four years, 19 states have enacted legislation or passed resolutions to provide for year-round daylight saving time, if Congress were to allow such a change, and in some cases, if surrounding states enact the same legislation.” (USA Today, November 2021)

Daylight saving time was first enacted by the federal government during World War I as a way to conserve coal.

A switch to year-round daylight saving time would require a change to federal law.

I personally would like year-round daylight savings time.  I know the arguments about getting kids on school buses in the dark in the morning.  Schools (and jobs) could adjust their time to fit the light hours.  Instead of the traditional 8 to 5 hours (with an hour lunch), businesses could be 8:30 to 5:30 (with an hour lunch), or 8:30 to 5 (with a half-hour lunch).

There are pros and cons to every issue. For example, If businesses changed to half-hour lunches, the coffee shops and restaurants that get lunch traffic from nearby businesses might suffer.

And, I’m ready for daylight savings time.  All those hours I saved last summer are just about used up (think of squirrels saving away acorns)!!! <grin>

THE YEAR SO FAR:

We made it through January and February in 2022 so far - 2 months out of 12 (or 1/6th of the year completed - or 16.66%). March used to be the first month of the year and thus October - which is our tenth month - was really the eighth month - with the prefix OCT meaning eight; December - which is our twelfth month - back then was the tenth month - with the prefix DEC meaning ten.

The Weather Channel calls March, April, and May spring months (and I agree).  June, July, and August are summer months; September, October, and November are fall months; and December, January, and February are winter months.  (Instead of using the solar-based calendar of solstices and equinoxes.)

The sun (approximately 93 million miles away - but the earth’s orbit is more of an ellipse than a perfect circle. “The Earth is closest to the Sun, at its perihelion, about two weeks after the December solstice and farthest from the Sun, or at its aphelion, about two weeks after the June solstice.”

So that tilt of the Earth’s axis makes it seem as if the sun is moving while it is really the Earth’s position is changing.

And, it is looking like some spring-like temperatures are on the way!!!

PUZZLER

Ron wants a pair of socks that match - any color.  In his sock drawer, there are 30 single dark green socks (all alike); 20 dark brown socks (all alike), and 150 black socks (all alike).  He has to be at work early this morning and doesn’t want to turn on a light.  He will pick some socks and go into the bathroom to turn on the light and see what he got.

How many socks will he need to pick to make sure he has a pair of the same color?

If he doesn’t care if he wears mismatched socks, how many does he need to pick to get a pair?

If he insists on wearing black socks, how many might he need to pick to get two black socks? (Assume the worst possible scenario)

Answers:

He will have to pick at least four socks to get a pair of any color

He will have to pick two socks (if mismatched)

The worst possible scenario is he would have to pick 52 socks to get a pair of black socks.

JOKES

A turtle is crossing the road when he’s mugged by two snails. When the police show up, they ask him what happened. The shaken turtle replies, “I don’t know. It all happened so fast.”

A guy spots a sign outside a house that reads “Talking Dog for Sale.” Intrigued, he walks in.

“So what have you done with your life?” he asks the dog.

“I’ve led a very full life,” says the dog. “I lived in the Alps rescuing avalanche victims. Then I served my country in Iraq. And now I spend my days reading to the residents of a retirement home.”

The guy is flabbergasted. He asks the dog’s owner, “Why on Earth would you want to get rid of an incredible dog like that?”

The owner says, “Because he’s a liar! He never did any of that!”

Henry was making big money!!  (And that is why he went to jail, his forgeries were 5% larger than real money!!!)

Paul had made some legal mistakes and was in jail.  But, he was a model prisoner and soon was allowed to work on projects around the prison.  He was heading a work team that was remodeling a kitchen but had refused to do a particular task.  The warden was surprised because Paul had been such a dependable inmate.  So, the warden called Paul in and asked him why he refused to do that task.

Paul answered, “That’s what got me into prison in the first place.”

The warden didn’t understand and asked “What was that?”

“Counter fitting”!!  (Counterfeiting)

A traffic cop in San Diego stopped a van with a driver and eight penguins. The cop said, “What are you doing?  Take those penguins to the zoo”.  The driver was a meek person and said “Yes sir”.

The next day at the same intersection, the cop stops the van with the driver and eight penguins and says “I told you to take those penguins to the zoo!”

The man answered, “I did and we enjoyed it immensely, but today, we are going to the beach”

A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the highway. Looking at the car, he was astounded to see that the elderly woman behind the wheel was knitting.
The trooper cranked down his window and yelled to the driver, “Pull over!”

“No!” the woman yelled back, “Cardigan!”

I tried to organize a hide-and-seek tournament, but it was a complete failure. Good players are hard to find.

“Interesting fact: a shark will only attack you if you’re wet.”

NATIONAL TODAY

March had a lot of celebrations for the WHOLE MONTH - like these:

NATIONAL CAFFEINE AWARENESS MONTH -March 2022 - National Today

This suggests no more than five cups of coffee in a day

IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH -March 2022 - National Today

Of course with St. Patrick’s Day, Irish Americans have a lot to celebrate. I’ve been to Ireland twice with student groups and have a little Irish in me!!!

NATIONAL CRAFTING MONTH -March 2022 - National Today  and

NATIONAL CROCHET MONTH -March 2022 - National Today

Do you know of crafts or crocheters?  (Are you a crafter or crocheter?) Maybe it is time to start a new project!!

NATIONAL MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH -March 2022 - National Today

I learned music in my school.  For a math major to balance that with music was using more of my brain!!

NATIONAL UMBRELLA MONTH -March 2022 - National Today

I have four umbrellas - and it seems as though none are where I need them when it rains.  They are all in the car when I’m in my apartment and I need to drive someplace; or when it suddenly pours when I’m driving, all of them are at home.

(And, just in case - umbrella in German is: Regenschirm; and in rare cases, the British call umbrellas Bumbershoots!!!)

NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH -March 2022 - National Today

Maybe you’ve heard that well-behaved women rarely make history!!!

RED CROSS MONTH -March 2022 - National Today

Always ready to help out when disasters hit

****************

And, some special days:

NATIONAL DENTIST'S DAY - March 6, 2022 - National Today
I’m not sure I want to observe this day.  Tomorrow (March 7), a dentist is going to remove three of my front teeth and put in a partial bridge.  (I picked the day so I wouldn’t have orchestra practice and could have a couple of days off of work).

NATIONAL FLAPJACK DAY - March 7, 2022 - National Today

Or pancake day!!  I tend to be more of a waffle lover (first cousin to the pancake) - because waffles have all those little holes that I can fill up with syrup and butter!! (Not that pancakes can’t have syrup and butter)

NATIONAL FALSE TEETH DAY - March 9, 2022 - National Today

I might have to post ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures today!!!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AWESOMENESS - March 10, 2022 - National Today

I know a lot of awesome people (and everybody I know is awesome in some regard!!!).  Yes, celebrate being awesome today!!!

WORSHIP OF TOOLS DAY - March 11, 2022 - National Today

Ahh yes - WOT day - Worship of Tools.  I am not a big do-it-yourself person, but there are some things I do.  My apartment needed more storage.  I found an old chest of drawers by the dumpster some time ago with one shelf.  Since then I have found boards that I have needed to cut and adapt to the chest.  I was doing this with a hand saw, but that was a bit sloppy and also took time.  I bought an electric jigsaw about three weeks ago and have finished up my shelves and got my (too large) selection of t-shirts onto shelves!!!  WOOOO.

NATIONAL PLANT A FLOWER DAY - March 12, 2022 - National Today

I have a tiny garden on my patio.  I have my Swiss Chard and my tomato plant that I have saved from last fall and an ivy plant that I left out on the last cold snap - and I’m hoping might come back but it isn’t looking very healthy!!!  I will have two small pots for flowers.  Maybe marigolds and zinnias (not much work - but still colorful!!!

WRAP-UP

It’s been a busy week for me - voting clerk on Tuesday (6 a.m. to 8 p.m. - a long day for a retired woman), two concerts and two rehearsals, and three nights of work.

Next week “should” be easier with the tooth extraction on Monday and a couple of days to rest up.  We’ll see!!!

(One day this week, I didn’t get my blog written until 11:00 p.m. before it was published.  I don’t like pushing my deadlines!!!)

LOVE WINS!!!
