SUNDAY, FUNDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2022

SUNDAY FUNDAY OCTOBER 16, 2022

WARM-UP

Yes, it is fall - and time to get out and walk.  There are lots of ways to walk.  You can use a treadmill, walk in your neighborhood, walk around a school track, find an indoor recreation center/gym, or hike on a trail.  (I’ve done all of these).  I’ve even counted my steps at the grocery store!!!

I use two apps.  The first is the “Health App”, built into the iPhone.  (I’m guessing there is a similar app for android phones).  This app does a lot of things - such as monitoring my earphone usage, double support time (lower is better), step length, the number of steps (i aim for at least 8,000 steps a day), walking asymmetry (am I leaning or bobbing more one way or another).

The iPhone version of the app also keeps track of walking steadiness.  As a person with osteopenia - which can lead to osteoporosis - I want to be walking steadily.  A higher value of walking steadily suggests that I am less prone to falls. (And, that is good).  Unstable walking can lead to falls - like a drunk walking!!!

Have you been outside hiking or walking?  The suggestion for seniors is that walking is a great way to keep in shape.  (And, for the younger readers, jogging or running).

I did a five-day vacation to Ashland Oregon over the weekend.  My cousin and I hiked on Mount Ashland and on Lithia Creek.  It was a beautiful trip!!!  The trail on Mount Ashland is part of the Pacific Crest Trail - a trail that goes from the Canadian border to the Mexican border.

I was at 10,000 steps (or about five miles) every day!!

MEMORY:

At Quinnipiac University in Hamden Connecticut, the campus was across the street from Sleeping Giant State Park.  In my last year there my faculty office was ON Sleeping Giant.  I could walk out the back door of the house that was serving as faculty office for five people and onto the trails.

I was also a “Giant Master” having done all of the trails on the ‘Giant’.  The Giant has a lookout built during the 1930s as a government project during the depression.  The trails are also rated for difficulty.

JOKES

Do we have any coach potatoes?

An exercise for people out of shape: Begin with a five-pound potato bag in each hand. Extend your arms straight out from your sides, hold them there for a full minute, and then relax. After a few weeks, move up to ten-pound potato bags. Then try 50-pound potato bags, and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-pound potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Two guys stole a calendar. They got six months each.

Could a ... ... librarian be called a bookkeeper? ... referee be a game warden? ... dairyman be a cowboy? ... cabinetmaker be the president?

National Days

NATIONAL VETERANS BBQ DAY - Sunday, October 16, 2022

The description says “National Veterans BBQ Day falls on October 16 every year. It is a holiday meant for celebrating our local veterans in a pleasant, friendly way by cooking them some BBQ or taking them out for a BBQ meal. Social media is usually abuzz on this day as people share recipes and veterans recount some of their adventures online. Steakhouses also participate in the holiday by treating veterans and those still in service with complimentary meals. National Veterans BBQ Day is sometimes mistaken for National Veterans’ Day, although the two holidays are apart in date and modes of celebration.”

NATIONAL MULLIGAN DAY - Monday, october 17, 2022

Everyone deserves a second chance. This October 17, celebrate National Mulligan Day and enjoy the comfort in knowing that if at first you don’t succeed, you’ll get another crack at it. Though often associated with getting a “freebie” after a less than desirable golf shot, National Mulligan Day applies to any undertaking in which you would care for a “do-over.” Mulligans are for those with the determination to fight through the adversity of the mishaps of life. Let’s be honest — we all need a mulligan from time to time.

(Sometimes I need a mulligan in bridge after a stupid bid!!!)

National Chocolate Cupcake Day 2019 —Wednesday, October 19

National Chocolate Cupcake Day is every year on October 18 – a day where office break rooms everywhere fill with a special kind of joy only brought by chocolate cupcakes

World Osteoporosis Day — Thursday, October 20

World Osteoporosis Day on October 20, is the time to learn about osteoporosis. Celebrate good health and educate yourself and others about the value of taking care of your body and protecting your bones and muscles from disabling and life-threatening fractures’

I had a bone density exam two months ago and was diagnosed with Osteopenia - a weakening of the bones - but not to the osteoporosis stage yet.  My doctor prescribed calcium, vitamin D and some exercises.

National Apple Day — History and Related Holidays

National Apple Day falls on October 21 and is a day dedicated entirely to celebrating all things apple: apple pie, apple sauce, apple crisp…

It seems to me that there are so many varieties of apples these days.  (Where did the Jonathan Apples go?)

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY - October 22, 2022

Make a Difference Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of October, on October 22 this year. If you have ever wondered if your actions can make a difference, the answer is yes. And if you have wondered where to start, the answer is Make a Difference Day.
