TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2023 - I AM TOO BUSY ...

 TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2023 - I AM TOO BUSY (BUT …)

I’m not sure this fits after yesterday’s blog, where I said I’m too busy. Today I’m writing about volunteering.

Much of my busyness is in free “work” (volunteering). I have volunteered all my life - from being a child in the children’s choir to a cross-guard, acting in plays, and so much more.

I know people who DON’T volunteer - but that’s not my style.

I volunteer at my church for some different things. (In the past, I even ran the “Wine Wheel” for the church festival). I’ve been a greeter, reader, usher, singer, and more.

My music is all volunteering. (I do get a free meal when we play at Walburg). That means practicing at home and practicing with the orchestra every week. (And I don’t miss rehearsals if I don’t have to).

I drive seniors for free as a volunteer. I don’t even get gas money or mileage. I take them to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, and other shopping. (It isn’t volunteering anymore - it is way beyond that - it is friendship).

I take some of my senior friends to lunch and pay (most of the time).

There are three rules for volunteering (also for business):

1. Show up

2. Show up on time

3. Show up on time, ready to work

I’m not volunteering at the senior living center. They do have volunteers - but I get paid. There is a method in that decision (to get paid). Some volunteers might say, “Oh, I don’t feel like going today. I’m “JUST” a volunteer; they won’t miss me.”

Years ago, when placing students for summer internships, there were paid and unpaid internships. I urged the students to take paid positions. On the unpaid internships, some managers say, “Oh boy, we have an intern this summer. They can make copies, run errands, make coffee, run for donuts, yup - “free help”!!

I wanted my students to get jobs - and when employers paid for student interns, it was a “try before your buy.” And I expected the students to earn their summer pay and employment after graduation.

*****

Yes, you have to watch your commitments. I volunteered years ago to be a Scoutmaster. Our son was preparing to be an Eagle Scout. The previous Scoutmaster had left the community, and nobody else was ready to be Scoutmaster. Yes, I slept in a tent, sometimes in the rain or heat - because it needed to be done FOR THE BOYS.

What is your passion? Can you volunteer to help out? Can you sing or play music? Join a choir, band, or orchestra (or all three). Can you be on a board of directors? Can you help seniors? Can you help kids? Please give us some time to improve the world.

For my infirm friends, you can still volunteer. My friend MN calls for her church to see who will ride the church van on Sunday.

Friends, some of you have done a lot of volunteering in the past - so you might be exempt - but many organizations can use some help occasionally. (One group asks people to put letters in envelopes periodically!!!)

LOVE WINS means helping out - and serving in LOVE (not complaining)

LOVE TRANSFORMS means letting your own life be changed - but also others’ as you serve

MONDAY, JULY 31, 2023 - SAYING NO

MONDAY, JULY 31, 2023 - LAST DAY OF JULY 2023

Scenario 1:  Karen is getting ready to go to the Georgetown Recreation Center and walk. She receives a text, "Could you work for Trisha this evening?". Karen says, "Yes."

Scenario 2: Our beloved BCBB director died - we need to create a new leadership group. Karen volunteers to be on the board.

Scenario 3:  My friend calls me.
"Hey Karen, I'm renting a place at Port Aransas for a few days. Can you go in with me?"

Karen says, "That would be fun, sure. I can do that."

But then, she has to organize what she wants to take and wear.

Scenario 4:  It is 8:30 pm, and Karen arrives home from work at the senior facility- tired and a bit crabby. She realizes that she still needs to write a blog for tomorrow. And she takes pride in having a blog post every day - 365 (or 366) days a year.   She sits down and writes something - that isn't excellent writing, but … hey - she wrote a blog post.

*****

Karen stops and thinks (#1), "But I must keep walking to stay healthy. But I can use the treadmill in my apartment complex exercise room."

Karen stops and thinks (#2). "But, I'm more relaxed than was in Connecticut. One year, my night schedule was: Cheshire Symphony Rehearsal on Monday night; Quinnipiac Pep Band Rehearsal on Tuesday night (and I'm the faculty advisor, so I should be there); Brass Quintet practice on Wednesday night;  Hamden Symphony Rehearsal on Thursday nights, and in the winter probably pep band playing for hockey games or basketball games on Friday, Saturday, and sometimes on Sunday.

Karen stops and thinks (#3) - "What did I just sign on for? It is over 4 hours to drive to Port Aransas. It's going to be expensive. Was this a priority for me?

Karen stops and thinks (#4). "Okay, what if I missed a day. Will anybody care or notice?"

*****

All the above are true, primarily because Karen doesn't know how to prioritize things. She has work (two evenings a week - unless she says 'yes' to more evenings). She likes her little income (it pays for gas in the car and lunch out with MN, JP, and others). And she really enjoys helping other people!!!

She has Granny Basketball (those away games are bad for her schedule. She needs (or wants) to be back the same evening so she can work the next day. Unlike the others on the team, Granny Basketball is not a priority for her. But it has become her "aerobics class."

Orchestra - she likes playing in the orchestra (and the BCBB and brass quintet). But she is almost 76 and the oldest in the orchestra (by a few months). She needs to replace her tuba - but that's expensive and not a good investment at age 76. (And, she hopes for her final concert to direct the orchestra on the Firebird Suite - last two movements).

Blog - she likes to think she is a writer. (She also recognizes that she has yet to be a good writer). And the blog takes time. The current Civil War novel on Saturday requires research into Civil War battles and actual facts.

Health - Karen is still getting younger. She wants to be in good shape for her senior years, but the twenty pounds she has been carrying isn't good for her. She wants to do the Duolingo German lessons for at least another three months (that will be four years of "daily" tasks. She likes doing Words With Friends (it keeps her brain fresh). She likes the Suduko (good thought process).

She likes doing her "Through the Bible in a Year," but last week, she fell four days behind - OUCH.

So, the question is, "What part of "NO" doesn't Karen understand?"

*****

Looking to the future - what do her priorities need to be? What can she say "NO" to, and what must she say "YES" to? (And does it really matter to anybody other than herself?)

Years ago, somebody suggested that I am a "YES PERSON." I like to say "YES." I want to be in the center of the universe. Am I working to "get into heaven?" (No). Do I like to keep RP, MN, and BM happy when they ask for rides? Yes, I do - I fit it into my tight schedule.

I have friends who go to movies - I "can't" - because I have to write my blogs. Taking last week off, I did see two movies on Netflix - because I was away from home.

I don't know how to relax.

I don't want much television. If I'm free in the late evening, I will watch reruns of Johnny Carson (9:00 to 10:00 pm). But that might make my blogs late (or watered down because I needed to take the time to write well).

So, who can I blame? Nobody - except myself. I need to learn how to say "no" gracefully.

*****

But I have to keep going. I have to bring the message that LOVE WINS; I have to preach that LOVE TRANSFORMS; and who will say, "I can only Love God as much as the person I love the least" if I don't say it?

But (I'm grinning now), I know that LOVE WINS.

Yep - keep going, Karen - keep grinning, keep loving, keep praying, keep being a good neighbor, keep being kind and friendly.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

"I asked a friend who is 80 what changes she feels in herself.

She sent me the following:

1 I have started loving myself After loving my parents, siblings, spouse, children, and friends.

2 I have realized that I am not “Atlas.” The world does not rest on my shoulders.

3 I have stopped bargaining with vegetable & fruit vendors at the Farmer’s Markets. A few pennies more will not break me, but it might help the poor fellow save for his daughter’s school fees.

4 I leave my waitress a big tip. The extra money might bring a smile to her face. She is working much harder for a living than I am.

5 I stopped telling my elderly friends they've often narrated that story. The story makes them walk down memory lane & relive their past.

6 I have learned not to correct people even when they are wrong. The onus of making everyone perfect is not on me. Peace is more precious than perfection.

7 I give compliments freely and generously. Compliments are a mood enhancer not only for the recipient but also for me. And a small tip for the recipient of a compliment, never, NEVER turn it down; just say "Thank You.”

8 I have learned not to bother about a crease or a spot on my shirt. Personality speaks louder than appearance.

9 I walk away from people who don't value me. They might not know my worth, but I do.

10 I remain calm when someone plays dirty to outrun me in the rat race. I am not a rat, and neither am I in any race.

11 I am learning not to be embarrassed by my emotions. It’s my emotions that make me human.

12 I have learned that it's better to drop the ego than to break a relationship. My ego will keep me aloof, whereas, with relationships, I will never be alone.

13 I have learned to live each day like the last. After all, it might be the last.

14 I am doing what makes me happy. I owe my happiness to myself. Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be satisfied at any time; choose to be happy!

I decided to share this with all my friends. Why must we wait to be 60 or 70, or 80? Why can't we practice this at any stage and age?

SATURDAY STORY - ZACH HIGGENBOTTOM - EPISODE 8

 ZACH8

Last week, two Black men died while trying to escape in Confederate Alabama. They were on the Underground Railroad, and two white men shot them after raping a woman (the wife of one of the men.)

*****

General Frank Peck wanted to stop the harassment of black people in recent weeks, this new movement WOW had killed six black men, burned down houses of twelve black families, and harassed hundreds of black people.

The Union Army had come into the South to stop slavery, and this was a form of pseudo-slavery. And General Peck wasn't going to stand for it.

*****

Patrick Murphy was in jail. That wasn't an unusual place for Patrick. He had no significant crimes but had been incarcerated for street fighting three times. His family came from Ireland in 1844 at the height of the Irish Potato Famine. He had been seven at the time. On the streets of Boston, the Irish were treated like lepers. His mother got a job as a domestic, and his two older sisters were also domestic. The northern states didn't enslave people, but the Irish in Boston were almost like slaves. Women got hired as maids and housekeepers for wealthy families along Commonwealth Avenue. Men got jobs on the docks. And, frequently, the children (especially the boys) roamed the streets.

The police constable offered Patrick to join the Union Army or stay in jail. That was an easy choice, and Patrick Murphy and several of his Irish friends joined the Union Army. They had basic training in Worcester, Massachusetts, and were sent to Columbus, Ohio, for the Central Union Army.

The commander recognized the tactics of the Boston Irish and created a squadron of 25 men that would be more commandos than the regular army. They might enter a small town, break into the bank, and take all the money. Their two most significant actions were to dress as Confederate Soldiers and steal train locomotives. That prevented the Confederates from moving men and supplies.

*****

General Peck had put his best trackers on the case of the two black men shot on the Underground Railroad.

According to Zach Higgenbottom and Rufus Smith, the two men rode horses. The central tracker, Samuel Longstreet, found horse tracks leaving the scene.  One of the horses had a broken horseshoe on the left front leg. Samuel studied the bullet casings left at the scene and identified the bullets as Winchester 417 bullets. Likewise, when they examined the bodies before the funeral, they were Winchester 417 holes.

The trackers followed the horse prints east from the attack for a mile and then turned sharply south - heading towards Knoxville, Alabama. The horses crossed three streams, but with the broken horseshoe, the tracker picked up the trail on the other side. As Samuel reached Knoxville, the tracks led into town, and there were too many fresh tracks to follow.

Not one to give up easily, Samuel carefully examined the horse tracks leaving Knoxville, and there were no similar broken horseshoe tracks. The killers were most likely still in Knoxville, or they sold or traded their horses.

They searched through the public stables and found the horse with the broken shoe. The stable owner didn't want to tattle on the Morris brothers and denied knowing the owner.

*****

Lieutenant Daniel Wheeler, Zach Higgenbottom, and Rufus Smith were appointed to root out the white supremacy group. Rufus was well known in the black community around Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It might be that he would know one or two of the other black leaders.

The farm was going well. The Southern Union Army had paired with the Union Navy and had defeated the Confederates at Mobile. The entire Southen shore was in Union control.

(And, the Southern Union Army under General Peck was happy to get regular shipments of coffee beans, and they could have real coffee, not chicory coffee).

*****

The farm project was a success. The Southern Union Army was well-fed and with healthy soldiers. General Peck sent produce to the Northern Union Army under Ulysses Grant. The Central Army under William Sherman was also fit.

The citizens and Confederate Army were demoralized. States were slowly roped back into the union.

*****

The trio of Daniel Wheeler, Zach Higgenbottom, and Rufus Smith started in Tuscaloosa. Rufus had friends in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), and the group visited with Elijah Brown and David Johnson.

Elijah and David named Roger Bentley as the local leader of the WOW group in Tuscaloosa. Three days later, a squad of 100 soldiers marched through the streets of Tuscaloosa. After thoroughly searching his house, the team stopped at Roger Bentley's house and took Bentley into custody. The Southern Union Army rounded up 200 WOW supporters and put them in a stockade.

The army had a judge to preside over the trial of the WOW supporters. The army searched their houses and found white garments the men wore while harassing blacks. The men on go generally guaranteed their fate when asked if blacks were humans and if "all men are created equal," as in the Declaration of Independence. A few men thought blacks were humans, but none of them felt they were equal.

*****

Next, the trio of Lieutenant Daniel Wheeler, Zach Higgenbottom, and Rufus Smith went east to the town of Vance and had similar success. Unfortunately, one of the WOW supporters shot at Rufus, and immediately, there were six bullets through his head and torso. When he heard of the success, General Peck had the man's head put on a pike in the center of the town. The message flew around the area. The Union army was not allowing any harassment or slavery to exist.

*****

Two weeks later, the trio went to Knoxville. They took Samuel Longstreet with them. Stopping at the stable where Samuel had identified the horse, Daniel Wheeler and Samuel Longstreet put a bullet through the stable's owner's foot to help him to tell, and he indicated it was Wayne and Bubba Morris.

Two days later, the retribution squad of 100 Union Soldiers showed up, and after a problematic interrogation, the Morris brothers confessed to killing the two black men on the Underground Railway.

The Morris brothers were hung for the murder.

The soldiers searched every home of a suspected WOW member. When finding the white gowns worn when harassing blacks, or anything such as books, papers, and magazines that insisted on white supremacy, that man was arrested and put in a stockade pending a trial.

FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2023 THE PRESENCE OF GOD

 FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2023 - SPIRITUAL THOUGHTS

Brother Lawrence (1611–1691) was a lay brother in a Carmelite monastery, primarily working in the kitchen. His reflections, known as Practice of the Presence of God, have inspired countless Christians and other spiritual seekers to simple practices of con

templation and presence. He begins by encouraging us to pause during busy days to enhance our awareness of God’s presence.

*****

Some translations say for Luke 17:22, “The kingdom of God “is within you.”  Lately, I have been thinking of the vastness (and smallness) of God. I like to think that a “dot” of God is in every molecule, in EVERY atom.

Let’s take what I know about atoms (which is very little!!). They seem to have a proton (center, electrons (circling the center), and neutrons (which also share the center with protons. Without understanding, I posit that God is in the proton. So God is IN everything. “Everything in the universe (except energy) is made of matter, so everything in the universe is made of atoms.” So, God is in everything!!!

As for humans, God would be in every cell in our bodies. If (out on a tangent) God said, “Let cell #82,385,920 in Karen White’s body disappear”, that cell would go “poof” and be gone.

We talk about the Holy Spirit being within us. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”

*****

So, back to the introduction about Brother Lawrence - Practice of the Presence of God - if every cell is somehow connected to God, then every cell “wants” to be in the practice of the Presence of God. (do cells think???). Every cell wants to thank the Creator, God, He, She, It, The Force, Ah, for being the Creator.

Can I practice the “presence of God”? Minimally, I do. I find myself chuckling at strange times - for the most unconventional of thoughts. I see the picture differently; the rug has a spot on it, and the patio door needs clearing. I know I hear, think, smell, touch, and perceive. My thoughts, actions, (whatever) have some underpinnings with God.

Now, we can develop our relationship with God like Brother Lawrence. EVERYTHING we do is tied to God.

Brother Lawrence was a kitchen helper. So, when he was peeling potatoes, he was in God’s presence; when he was doing dishes, he was in God’s presence; when he was boiling water, he was in God’s presence. And … not only in God’s presence - but as I understand Brother Lawrence, he was happy to be “IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD.”

Can we be in the presence of God - while doing whatever we are doing? Can I be in the fact of God while I clip my toenails? While I brush my teeth? (And, when I pray?)

Just something to think about this week!!!

THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2023 - TRAVEL, INTERNET AND AI

THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2023 INTERNET AND TRAVEL

Last week I wrote about travel. This week I want to tie that to the Internet.

First, some examples:

Scenario 1: (March 1983)

We had been to Minnesota for a family gathering. It generally was a five-hour drive to return to South Dakota. We stayed longer than I liked and had heard the weather forecast. Although I had driven those particular roads frequently, I didn’t want to go all the way in the dark on backroads. And - it started to snow, and then it was snowing heavily. You couldn’t see the road - it was covered in white snow. The wind was blowing it all over. I was driving, and I could feel the car slide on what was slick wet snow. It was dangerous - time to stop.

So, my spouse pulled out her phone, found lodging in the next community, and booked a room for us. (NOPE - not in 1983 - there were no iPhones, no internet).

We drove to the next town, and a hotel had a “Vacancy” sign; we pulled in, walked to the desk, and reserved a room for the night. Done.

No Internet - no ability to search for lodging.

Note - we didn’t have any options of price - a room for the night in a snowstorm - no matter the cost.

*****

Scenario 2: (June 1974)

It was our honeymoon (1974), and we were going to the North Shore of Lake Superior. I had looked at maps. We had AAA and could get both maps and their tour books. We planned to go passed Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Light House, and stay in Silver Bay, Minnesota, for a night. With the tour books, we found a motel, and I called and made a reservation. (Otherwise, it would be a drive up and down the road looking for a place with a vacancy sign!)

We didn’t have credit cards and paid in cash.

No Internet, no electronic payment systems.

*****

Scenario 3: (2023)

My friend wanted to visit Port Aransas for a few days. She searched for rooms using her computer and found one in our price range. She looked at the comments, clicked “Book,” and paid with a credit card - BINGO!!!

The website showed this property was just off the beach but had a walkway through the dunes to the beach. There were a lot of pictures of the area.

The manager texted my friend when the room was clean and ready.

Use of the Internet to find a room for us  Use of texting. Use of credit card payment systems.

*****

Scenario 4: (2030 - future)

We decided to go to Port Aransas again. We discussed our AI (artificial intelligence) interface (like Siri). We gave parameters like days, cost, location, and amenities and said, “Search.”

Within 5 seconds, there was a list. The AI interface considered our ages, previous experiences, and food preferences and filled out a plan for eating and excursions. Since my friend was now using a walker (which the AI Interface knew), it picked locations that were accessible to walkers. We had options, but the AI Interface knew we liked Paradise Key restaurant. It interfaced with the restaurant to ensure we got the best discount and a table by the window.

Our AI Interface analyzed our finances, personalities, and infirmities and recommended Marco as our waiter. Marco had a bottle of San Resento 2021 on reserve for us. The interface also had a shrimp boat to dock while we were there (for ambiance). Directions for the trip (restaurant and attractions)  went direct to our innovative autonomous vehicle. Since my birthday was in three weeks, the AI Interface had a small cake at the end of our meal - a white cake with peach ice cream (my favorite).

The AI Interface knew we liked to sit on the beach and reserved a beach location with a canopy and beach chairs that would be there after our afternoon naps.

*****

Artificial intelligence will happen - whether we want it or not. We can override its decisions, but it (the interface) will know us deeply to know precisely what I want - even if I can’t quite express it myself!!!

*****

Computing - leading to artificial intelligence is powerful. Will we lose our ability to think? No, but it will supplement - and guide us.

The concept of a computer helping make decisions is almost old news. Go to LendingTree.com and put in your information - and in 10 seconds, the computer has made a lending decision based on your credit score, job age, and previous financial situations. A human did not make the loan decision - but the computer did!

*****

Today (2023), you can use any of the many hotel reservation sites to find a room if you are traveling. Trivago, Hotels.com, Expedia, and others will do the calculation for a hotel. Likewise, many places will handle airfare plans.

Medical decisions are made with personal data - but with an “artificial interface” making the decision. Is a person’s BMI (Body Mass Indicator) at a level where surgery can be performed? Is the blood pressure too high?

*****

Years ago, I did a dissertation on “Expert Systems” - the concept of encoding the logic of a human expert into a computer system. (Comment - I should have stayed up with that topic; as we moved into Artificial Intelligence, I would have been at the forefront of technical development.)

Yes, computing can make travel much more straightforward. Computing can make medical and financial decisions easier (and better).

Yes, AI is here to stay and will improve our lives. Will there be problems? Probably. In the long run, it will come out on top.
