SUNDAY FUNDAY - JULY 16, 2023

 SUNDAY FUNDAY - JULY 16, 2023

WARM-UP

THE HEAT IS BACK.

“And, how hot is it?”

On hot summer days, what do cats eat?
A mice-cream cone!

What’s the hottest letter in the alphabet?
‘B’, because it makes oil, boil.

What is it called when a gymnast seasons their food during hot weather?
Somersault.

In the summertime, what do you call a dog? A hot dog
And what do you call a dog in the winter it’s a chili dog.

It’s so hot, I dreamt I bought a house in Alaska.

What do frogs enjoy on a hot summer day?
Croak-a-cola, of course!

It’s so hot, if it drops below 100 it feels a bit chilly.

*****
BUT SERIOUSLY:

Earth just keeps shattering temperature records.

Monday, July 3rd ranked as Earth’s hottest day in 100,000+ years. Then the globe pulled a three-peat as each subsequent day through Thursday broke the heat record set the day before, making July 3–6 the hottest four days on record.

The steamy week followed the warmest June ever, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

And it’s no better down where it’s wetter: Sea ice levels off the coast of Antarctica have hit record lows, and the North Atlantic has recently surged passed its previous high temps…by a lot.

BASEBALL

Its Was The All-Star Break:

Here are the mid-season standings:
Tampa Bay - is ahead in the American League East (58 wins, 35 losses)

Cleveland Guardians - American League Central (record of 45 wins, 45 losses)

(followed by the Minnesota Twins (45 wins, 46 losses)

Texas Rangers - American League West (52 wins; 39 losses)
(followed by the Houston Astros - 50 and 41)

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Atlanta Braves - National League East- 60 and 29

Cincinnati Reds - National League Central - 50 and 41

Los Angeles Dodgers - National League West - 51 and 39

And, if you missed it - the National League won 3 to 2 over the American League

Growing up I was a baseball fan.  I watched Dizzy Dean announce the Falstaff Game of the Week (and sing “The Wabash Cannonball”).  I followed the St. Louis Cardinals (there was a split among my uncles - two for St. Louis and two for Chicago Cubs).

When the Senators (from Washington DC moved to Minnesota in 1961, the Twins became my second team to cheer for (“We’re gonna win Twins, we’re gonna score”)

But, over the years, my interest has waned.  I’m not sure I could tell you any players anymore - while once I could tell you every starter on the Cardinals and his batting average.  Life happened, and time became short, so watching a three-hour baseball game wasn’t as important as work, family, and other activities.

There are a lot of athletic events that want my entertainment dollars and/or time.  Even in summer, I can watch golf, women’s professional basketball, tennis (Wimbledon this week), the Tour de France bike race, and even some non-NFL football teams.

Maybe as October comes along and if the Cardinals, Twins, or Astros are playing in the World Series I might watch.

SENIOR STORY

Last year, I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive double-pane energy-efficient kinds. But this week, I got a call from the contractor complaining that his work had been completed a whole year and I had yet to pay for them.

Boy, oh boy, did we go around! Just because I'm a senior doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I proceeded to tell him just what his fast-talking sales guy had told me last year. He said that in one year, the windows would pay for themselves. There was silence on the other end of the line, so I just hung up, and he hasn't called back. Guess he was embarrassed.

WRAP-UP

Have you noticed the days (or the daylight hours) are getting shorter?  Just a minute or two a day.

Stay cool, have fun, make memories, love one another
