WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 2021 SELF LOVE - CONTINUED

WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 2021 SELF LOVE (CONTINUED)

‘LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

Now, you don’t have to be a Christian, or religious at all to read that statement.  Yes, it did come from Jesus - the Christian Messiah, but taking that as a ‘reasonable’ statement - to live in this world, you need to get along with your neighbors - in fact, to LOVE your neighbors.  I don’t really want to be too religious today, but in Luke 10:25-37 Jesus tells the story of a good Samaritan who took care of an injured man that he didn’t know until that day.  The statement becomes - “and who is my neighbor”, and the implied answer is “everybody” is my neighbor.

So, if I take this statement with some confidence, I get the impression that (a) I need to love myself, and once I’ve done that (b) I can love my neighbor - and really love everybody.

The first part is the hardest - how do I love myself?  After all, I’m in this skin 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  I know what stupid things I have done.  I know my mistakes.  I know my thoughts - so even when I’m smiling at somebody, I might be thinking “what a jerk”!!!

But, the classic battle of “nature” (environment) versus “nurture” (family) does happen to affect who we are and our self love.

Scenario:  I was in the grocery store and a lady with a child was in the same aisle.  The child picked up a sugary cereal and put it into the cart.  The mother screamed at the child “You are a terrible child”, “I hate you”, “You are worthless”, and similar abasing, negative comments.  She smacked the child on his/her face and the child started to cry.  The mother continued “Stop that crying this instant or I will give you something to really cry about”.

There are families where child abuse is rampant.  This scenario has verbal abuse and physical abuse.  A dad physically beats a child even so the child has to go to the emergency room and then has to lie “I fell down the stairs”.

As the child grows, he or she learns to keep out of sight, be so meek and not confront the parent.  He or she learns that talking back will get a slap, a kick, or worse.  By the time the child gets on his or her own, it has been so programmed into them that the only way to raise children is to cower over them, abuse them, beat them.

And, how in the world does such a child learn “Love your neighbors like yourself”, because he or she hasn’t learned “self love”.  The child has been yelled at for so long, to be treated positively is foreign to them.  And then that child marries and has children and “knows” exactly how to raise obedient children - yell, scream, smack them.

Sometimes alcohol or drugs can be the problem - (I’ll use ‘dad’ but it could be ‘mom’ as well).  Dad comes home drunk - he has spent his money on “good times”, and is mad at himself but takes it out on his kids.

*****

I know of women who were abused by their fathers - they have gone through a lot of therapy (and thus, a lot of money).  Finally, through a supernatural action, they forgive their father.  It isn’t easy to forgive a monster.

Like those who suffered through concentration camps during World War II - having to face their captors, having to forgive Hitler and the Holocaust, is just too hard.  How do you learn self love when you would rather commit those same acts on the perpetrators if you had the chance.

Love your neighbor as yourself?  Impossible if you don’t love yourself.  You have been told over  and over you are no good, you are worthless, you are scum - and now you need to forgive and love your father (or captors)?  Pretty much impossible.

There tends to be the passing of abuse on from one generation to the next.  My grandfather beat my father, my father beat me, therefore I “must” beat my sons in order for them to be “real men” when they grow up.

The cycle of hatred needs to be broken. My particular viewpoint is that it needs some divine intervention from how ever you see God/Infinite Being/Source/The Force.  Otherwise, you will not be able to love your neighbor, you will not be able to love yourself.  Tough lessons.  How can you forgive?

And, it doesn’t have to be abuse that causes you to doubt your value, your self worth, and your self love.  It could be estrangement - a division by politics or religion or social identification that has caused you to lose your self love.  But, even then you may need that divine intervention to understand that you, too, are a child of God, made in the image and likeness of God, and whatever others might say, you, too, are worthy of His (Her) Love and Grace.

I believe that Love does win - but you need to get to that love.

Tomorrow - one more day of self-love!!

TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2021 SELF-LOVE

 TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2021 SELF-LOVE

I’m going to do (at least) three days on SELF-LOVE.

My basis is Mark 12:30-31 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

So … “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF” - does that imply that I should love myself?

But, how can I love myself?  I know what I have done (Psalm 51:3 - “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.” I know how bad, ugly, sinful, nasty, smelly, and worthless I have been.  I can’t love myself!!!  (And my reasoning, I can’t love my neighbor either.)

Self-love - is all too frequently self-loathing!!  I’m too fat, I’m too ugly, I never can get my hair right, My back hurts, I limp - but the internal stuff (bad, ugly, sinful, … from the last paragraph).

Let’s start with an affirmation - I need to love myself.  (Did you get that?  I need to think I’m pretty special, that I have value in the world, that I can contribute (or still contribute)).  I was talking the other day to a shut-in friend that was worried about self-love.  She does contribute, she is important, but she was feeling down and that she didn’t have anything to offer - and that is totally untrue!!!

From: https://www.healthline.com/health/13-self-love-habits-every-woman-needs-to-have#1.-Stop-comparing-yourself-to-others

. Stop comparing yourself to others.  I’m not as pretty as my sister, I’m fatter than my friend, I’m not that smart. Comparing yourself to others is almost always a negative experience.  There is always somebody better, faster, cuter, smarter, harder-working, etc.

. In a similar vein, don’t worry about others' opinions. You can’t please all people - so you must please yourself. I’m reminded of the story of the man, the son, and the donkey - where some people said the man should ride the donkey, others said the son should ride, and finally others suggested don’t put anybody on the donkey - they tried to please others!!

.Allow yourself to make mistakes.  I am laughing at myself when I miss when shooting baskets.  You learn from your mistakes - and that is why I’m so smart (because I make a lot of mistakes!!!)

.Don’t worry about your body’s appearance.  We’ve heard of girls with anorexia - where they think they are fat and almost starve to death.  Yes, we exercise for health, not necessarily for appearance.  (But, on the other hand, do take care of your body, obesity can lead to many problems)

.Don’t allow toxic people to berate you.  You will find people who find fault in everything.  People that always complain - about you, about the government, about the economy, - just ignore them, and (if you can), avoid them!!!

.Understand your fears.  Why are you scared of something?  Process your fears, why are you letting fears stand in your way of loving yourself?

. Trust yourself to make good decisions for yourself.  We so often doubt ourselves and our ability to do what’s right, when most of the time we do know in our hearts what’s best. Remember that your feelings are valid. You’re not losing touch with reality. You know yourself better than anyone else, so be your best advocate. (Pray for wisdom for good decisions)

.Take every opportunity life presents or create your own. The timing is never going to be perfect for that next big step in your life. The set up may not be ideal, but that shouldn’t hold you back from reaching to meet your goals and dreams. Instead, seize the moment because it may never come back. I’m slowly starting my relationship/reconciliation coaching, I don’t have many clients and as this point says “the set up may not be ideal”!!!  I really like the concept of helping people reach their goals and dreams (as my particular goals and dreams!!!)

.Put yourself first (if you really want to love yourself).

Years ago, I attended the Nobel Symposium at Gustavus Adolphus University.  A take-away was that “self is the first reality”.  The article adds this “Don’t feel bad about doing this. Women, especially, can grow accustomed to putting others first. Although there’s a time and a place for this, it shouldn't be a habit that costs you your mental or emotional well-being.”

. Feel joy and pain fully

We need to experience the fullness of emotions, but also realize that we are much more than our emotions.  We are unique and special individuals.  Learn to love deeply - and fully!!!

.Exercise boldness in public

Speak up, express yourself.  If you want to love others as you love yourself, you must be able to understand your place in society.  Not a mouse - but an individual with thoughts and ideas.  Be willing and able to share!!!

.See beauty around you - in the simple things

Let the sound of the birds chirping, the wind through the trees, the colors around you.  Appreciate the beauty of life.

.BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Yes, I capitalized this one.  If you are going to love your neighbor as yourself, you need to be kind to yourself.  Speak positive words to yourself, laugh at and with yourself.  I have Post-It notes around my apartment - with quotes, verses, encouragement.  Again, we are unique, special and so lovable. So - use the power of positive affirmations to build yourself up (even when others want to knock you down!!!

*****

There we are - don’t “trash talk” to others or to yourself.  If you can be anything - be nice!!!  Let no corrupt communication come out of your mouth. (Ephesians 4:29).

LOVE YOURSELF - so you can fulfill the concept of loving your neighbor as yourself!!!

More tomorrow and Thursday!!

LOVE WINS!!!

MONDAY, JULY 26, 2021 RECONCILIATION (AGAIN)

MONDAY, JULY 26, 2021 RECONCILIATION (AGAIN)

In the past two weeks, I’ve been looking at reconciliation.  It seems like many people / many families have some “black sheep” that they are estranged from.  And, if you aren’t directly involved you may be on the edge - maybe your children don’t talk to each other, maybe it is somebody in your extended family - maybe it is from a divorce - and members of the family have taken sides.

There might be financial issues - a friend / relative owes me money and isn’t paying, or you owe somebody money.  It might be even inheritance issues - Tom got the farm and you got next to nothing.

So, the first issue is up to you.  DO YOU REALLY WANT TO RECONCILE?

That might be qualified - if we can reconcile and not be financially or emotionally hurt by the reconciliation.  If Tom got the farm, he might not want to reconcile if he has to sell the farm or give part of the proceeds to the rest of the family.

What about the emotional issues?  What if the person you want to reconcile with is really different?

. Maybe they changed their religion - from (say) Catholic Christian to Evangelical Christian?  Or from (say) Catholic Christian to Jewish, or Catholic Christian to Muslim; or Catholic Christian to Jehovah’s Witnesses?

. Maybe they changed their lifestyle - maybe the person you want to reconcile with is now divorced? Or maybe the person was a straight female and now is a lesbian, or the person was a straight male and now is a homosexual/gay male; or the person was (say) a man and now is a transgender woman

. What if the person you want to reconcile with has become politically opposite of you?

If the barriers are too much, then you will not be free to reconcile.  You don’t have to like what they have done, but you do have to love them.  Last Saturday’s story had a conservative grandmother and a liberal granddaughter who hadn’t spoken for five years because of lifestyle and actions (of the granddaughter).  But, the granddaughter exercised an act of love - by sitting with her grandma after surgery.

If your person has made some choices in his/her life that separates them from you, if you really want to reconcile, you need to overlook the choices they have made.  LOVE wins.

Turning the other cheek might have meant that somebody hurt you - but it can also mean you have been hurt by a family member or a friend - and taking it (aka ‘turning your cheek’) without complaining or striking back.

If you want reconciliation, there may have been a lot of hurt.  Thinking of the Prodigal Son story, the son hurt his father by taking his inheritance and leaving, for gambling away the money in wild living, If the father knew (and he could only guess), what all the son had done each time could have been like a paper cut - just another hurt, just another slap in dad’s face.

How about with money?  You gave money (maybe even big money) to somebody and they lost it - squandered it - can’t ever repay you.  Can you forgive and reconcile?

What if the person (son, daughter, father, grandfather, mother, grandmother is living a life outside your boundaries?  Your daughter is now working as a prostitute - can you reconcile that?  If your father has now become an aged nudist hippie?  You might not like what they have done - but you have to LOVE and forgive them if you want to reconcile.

Another article I was reading was about the Sandy Hook (Connecticut) school shooting.  A mother lost her son to the gunman.  But, she came around and forgave him.  I think that forgiving somebody who killed your son would take a lot of guts.

Yes, this lady did some research about the gunman who had been rejected and kicked to the curb pretty much all his life.  His life had been marked by abuse.  That might mitigate the hatred that a mother might have - but to step across that line and say “I forgive him” is a tough choice - but she did.

I have also known that some estrangements go back so far, that the people aren’t really sure anymore WHY they are fighting.  Fighting just seems so natural.  But, if you let it, love can also become natural!!

The rivalry between two sisters might have spilled over to their children - where the children of sister-A and the children of sister-B kept a record of wrongs - without understanding WHY they are estranged from the other side of the family.

I like the concept that “All things are possible with God” (Luke 1:37).  Think of the Source, the Infinite, the Creator - did he stop and say “You know it is impossible to create a universe, so I won’t do it”.  No, he did the “impossible” - because with God all things are possible.

If you are estranged - and if you really want to make up - take the first step.  Forgive the other person, love the other person.

The reality (as I see if), is that you can forgive (even forgive the almost impossible), or you can let a “cancer” grow in your heart and mind - a ‘cancer’ of hate and unforgiveness.

LOVE DOES WIN!!!

HUGS!!

SUNDAY FUNDAY - JULY 25, 2021

 SUNDAY FUNDAY - JULY 25, 2021

July is moving along.  A week from today will be the first of August.  BUT, COVID is back in the news.  I think all of us (except maybe one) have been vaccinated.  I don’t like wearing a mask, but I do want to be safe and I do want all of us to be safe!!!

The Olympics have started.  I generally have watched the Olympics - but I don’t have a television (and don’t want one).  I like the concept that athletes from around the world compete on a level playing field.  But many of the smaller countries don’t stand a chance against Americans (and Germans, and Russians and Chinese and others) that have top flight training and support facilities!!!  (I guess I like cheering for the underdogs!!!)

And speaking of the underdogs -the Boston Red Sox are leading the American League East division - eight games ahead of the New York Yankees.

 SATURDAY JULY 24, 2021 - SATURDAY STORY

(The scenario came two weeks ago- July 13th)

*****

Grandma is a conservative Christian, she voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 election.  Granddaughter Morgan is quite a bit different than Grandma.  Morgan is a lesbian and lives with her partner.  They are in the process of adopting a little girl.  Morgan is an art studio in her own right as her body has many tattoos and piercings.  And, Morgan no longer goes to any church, although she is quite spiritual.

Most of Morgan’s antics have lessened when she graduated from college and took a position as an art teacher at Edina High School in Edina, Minnesota.  Some of her art work has been displayed in exhibits in the Twin Cities, and she has sold some of her paintings and other artwork.  She was a runner-up in the annual Ducks Unlimited Print contest.

Grandma doesn’t approve of Morgan’s lifestyle and has written out of her will.  Morgan would like to get to know her Grandmother more, but isn’t allowed to visit - and communication is difficult.

But deep in Morgan’s heart, Morgan wants to reconcile with her grandma.  She remembers Nana loving her as a toddler, coming to gymnastic events, band, choir, and soccer games.  She loves her Nana and has tried to reconcile with her in the past.  Morgan believes that LOVE WINS (she must have been reading my blog).  This has become almost an obsession

Her dad is Nana’s son - and communicates to Morgan about her grandma.  Dad has told Morgan that her email notes to Grandma get deleted.  Physical mail cards are torn up and thrown in the trash.  If Morgan calls Grandma, Grandma will hang up.

*****

Last week on Tuesday, Dad told Morgan that Grandma was going to have a knee replacement on Friday July 16.  Since it was summer, Morgan’s time was open.  Morgan does have some commissioned work from the University of Minnesota, from a new building for Minnesota National Resources, and others.

So, on Friday July 16, Morgan was at Fairview-Southdale Hospital by 10 a.m.  She estimated that Nana would be in surgery for most of the morning, but she planned on getting into Nana’s hospital room and being there for the day.  She packed a sketchbook, knitting, her iPhone loaded with music and a bag of goodies - for her and for Nana.  This was going to be kind of a “make or break” day for her reconciliation with her grandma.  Morgan hadn’t changed her name - which was the same as her father’s and Nana -Morgan Miller - and she thought that would help her gain entry to Nana’s room.

Morgan checked in with a receptionist and learned that Nana’s surgery went well and she was in recovery now and would be in her regular hospital room in an hour.  She was directed to a family waiting room and they would let her know when she could visit. The receptionist said grandma would be resting most of the day, but would have times when she was awake.  And, the receptionist said it would be just great for Morgan to spend the day with her grandmother.

About an hour-and-one-half later, the receptionist came to Morgan and said she could go to her grandmother’s room (#723).  She did and there was a nurse checking Nana’s vital signs.  Nana was hooked up to an IV and was vaguely awake.

Morgan said to the nurse “Hi, I’m Morgan Miller and I’m here to sit with my grandmother today”.  The nurse smiled knowing that recovery goes better when a family member or friend keeps the patient from focusing on their pain.  The nurse said “That is great. She'll be dozing off and on today.  We might try to get her up and walking with a walker later today, and you can be helpful then.”

Then Morgan said “Good Morning Nana.  I love you.  I’m going to spend the day with you”.

Nana first looked pleased and then something back in her brain must have suggested that this was the problem grandchild.  Morgan anticipated this and planted a kiss on Nana’s forehead and squeezed her hand.  That seemed to disarm Nana.

The nurse whispered to Morgan as she left the room “She might be a little groggy today.  Be patient, she’ll come around”.

Morgan lingered over those words “Be patient, she’ll come around”.  It had been five years since Nana had rejected her.  She had been patient, and today, she was expecting love to reappear.  Again, she thought of ‘love wins’.  Even behind all the evil, strained relationships, love does win, she believed.

*****

Over the next few hours, Nana was awake and asleep.  She did get a low calorie / low fat lunch (Nana was borderline diabetic), and Morgan helped her with some of the soft items (applesauce, pudding), when Nana was awake.  Nada didn’t want to talk much to Morgan, but Morgan took this in stride.  She carried on a light banner - like the artwork she was working on for the University of Minnesota.  It was to be a mural of students being transformed by education - with a big broad, blue sky.  Then she talked of her commission for the Minnesota Natural Resources - a lake view with egrets, loons, eagles, a few shy bears behind trees, and on the far side of the lake a group of small boats of fishermen. Pretty typical Minnesota natural resources mural.

At times Nana fell asleep.  Morgan sat next to her - sometimes holding her hand, sometimes softly saying to the unconscious woman “I love you Nana”.  One time when she was fully awake, she accusatively asked “Why are you here?”

Morgan deflected the question by saying “Because I love you”.  Her grandmother said “harrumph” under her breath.  Morgan looked at her Nana and smiled.  She pulled out her sketch pad and showed her some of the drawings she was working on this morning.  And, Nana did look at the pictures and even commented “I like that” on a couple of sketches.

Morgan asked her questions like “are you hurting?” “Do you want some ice water?” “Do you want to rest for a while?” “Are you comfortable?”  “Do you want a blanket?”.

Nana went back to sleep.  At various times the nurses came in to take grandma’s vital signs and check up on her.  About 4:30, the doctor stopped by to see how his patient was coming.  He looked at Morgan and suggested that later the two of them could take a short walk together.  He wanted his patient to get up and move.  After some dinner, a physical therapy assistant came over and Nana, Morgan and Curtis (the assistant), did some walking.  Nana was slow and hadn’t used a walker before so the progress was slow.   But, she was up and moving.

About 6:30, Morgan’s Dad and Mom (Tom and Jeanine Wilson) came to visit.  Dad was a little surprised to see Morgan there.  Nana started with “I don’t know why she is here.” - followed by a long pause and a very low voice she continued “but, I’m glad she was here today.” (A blush came to Morgan’s face at that comment.

Later the speaker system announced it was the end of visiting hours.  Dad and Mom kissed Nana goodbye, and Morgan did the same but with a whisper in Nana’s ear “I love you Nana, I forgive you.  Sleep well and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

They left Nana and walked out to the parking garage together.  Dad had a smile as he asked Morgan about spending the day with Nana.  She answered “It was my pleasure”.

And, back in the hospital room, Nana had a warm feeling as she thought about Morgan being there!!!

******

Epilogue

Morgan did go back the next two days and then she volunteered to take Nana to her physical therapy appointments since she could adapt her schedule better.

And, about a week later, on a drive home from physical therapy, Nana turned to Morgan and said “I’m sorry for hating you.” again a long pause and then “I was wrong and I do love you”!!

******

Comment:  So, yes, of course, a Pollyanna story today - but reconciliation and healing of relationships can occur - but it does take love, time, and desire to reconcile.  In the story, Morgan had a captive audience who couldn’t get away.  Over the years, I’ve heard a strange way to spell the word love - it is “T  I  M  E”!!!

May you grow in your love, and reconcile with those that aren’t as close as they should be!!

LOVE WINS!!!

FRIDAY JULY 23, 2021 LOVE WINS FRIDAY

FRIDAY JULY 23, 2021 LOVE WINS FRIDAY

The Radical Jesus

I’ve been listening to a podcast that says “Jesus was a radical”, and implies that early Christians were radicals.  If you will, if you were a Christian and practiced your faith, you probably did it carefully or you would be imprisoned - or maybe sent to the Colosseum to fight against gladiators.  You knew that at almost any day and time, a knock on your door could mean arrest.  The speaker suggested that if you were a Christian until the year 313 (when Constantine approved Christianity), you lived kind of a double life - a public life and a private life - where you practiced your faith.

But, with the official state approval of Christianity, it became “acceptable”.  Oh yes, love your neighbor, be kind, be nice, don’t be trouble for the government, live peacefully.

I have mentioned that I’ve been listening to an audiobook “Unconditional” by Brian Zahnd.  Mr. Zahnd suggests that even from the earliest days of Christianity, it has been a radical thought.

That author suggests that Jesus “platform” (using a political term) is well laid out in the Sermon on the Mound (Matthew 5 and 6).  I’m using verses 38 to 48 today.  Reread it and see how really radical it was and still in.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to the other cheek also.  And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.  If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.  Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

*****

Turn the other cheek?  Give them your shirt and your coat?  Go with them two miles?

Cmon - this isn’t real - this is just hyperbole!!!

And, if this wasn’t enough:

*****

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

*****

Love your enemies - pray for those who persecute you!!!  Really?  I’m to love my enemies???  Get real!!  Pray for the government - maybe even especially if you don’t like our president!!!  Love my enemies???

And, from my travels, that the people in Kazakhstan and Belarus and <wherever> do love their families - even the evil people around us love their families.  It seems so impossible to love those outside “my” area.  Can I love the homeless?  Can I love those with different beliefs?  Can I love gays, lesbians and others?  Can I love those with COVID?  Those who have a physical defect?

Have you seen the bumper stickers ‘God bless our troops, especially our snipers”.  I suspect that isn’t loving your enemies as the Sermon on the Mound suggests.

The sun rises on all people, the rain falls on all people.

And, maybe the most radical - he wants me to be “perfect”??  Ha - little chance of that happening!!  I’m going to try to be perfect - but come on now - I might get to 85% - but never to 100% on the “perfect” scale.

Aside - he “sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” - we can’t pray “rain on my land - but don’t rain on Farmer Bob’s land because he is unrighteous!!”.  And, when it rains on the righteous and the unrighteous, the righteous get wetter!!  (That’s because the unrighteous have stolen the umbrellas of the righteous!!)

*****

I’m not implying that people have to be Christians - it works for me; but I am implying that being a radical lover, loving your friends, family, neighbors, AND enemies is the way to go.  (And, not, I am not there).

I write “LOVE WINS” - and it does win - ultimately.  It might not be today, but some day!!!

HUGS!!!

THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2021 - FORGIVENESS, RECONCILIATION AND REVENGE!!

THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2021 - FORGIVENESS, RECONCILIATION AND REVENGE!!

I’ve been working through forgiveness, and reconciliation.  There are some alternatives - holding a grudge - and taking REVENGE!!!

Scenario 1:

“You hurt me, so I’m going to hurt you!!!  An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.  And, you don’t know what I’m planning.  I’m going to really hurt you!!!”

Scenario 2:

I got fired from my job.  I hate my boss and those people.  They will have to pay for what they did to me.  So, I’m going to get a gun and shoot up the place (before killing myself).

I’M GOING TO GET REVENGE!!

*****

International 1:

You called one of our citizens a spy and jailed them, so we arrested two of your people as spies and jailed them!!  (Revenge!!  An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth!!)

*****

“Revenge is defined as the act of committing a harmful action against a person or group in response to a grievance, be it real or perceived”

From the Sermon on the Mound - Matthew 5:38

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.  If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Radical forgiveness says “I have been hurt (and it is worse if it is intentional), it is very hard to turn the other cheek.”

Okay, I’m not sure I want to write this:

In October 2019, my wife was filing divorce proceedings against me.  I was not protesting the divorce.  The divorce settlement of course involved financial considerations.  I gave her our 2400 square foot house (free and clear - no debt) and I had been moved into a 582 square foot apartment.  Of the remaining amount, she wanted 70%!!!  Friends said “Don’t let her take you to the cleaners!!”  (I’m not sure why they said that, my clothes were clean!!)   I did something stupid (I’m good at doing stupid things!!! <grin>).  I said “If I’m not here tomorrow, I’ll leave you a note on my desk”.  I think that was a (veiled) threat that I was going to commit suicide!!  About an hour later, two policemen were pounding heavily at my door and took me to a mental health facility where I stayed for four days.  I’m not sure I was going to kill myself, but in my mental state I could have done something stupid.

(My thinking about the divorce)  "Hey, you’ve been pushing me, so let me kill myself - that will be revenge on you!!!"

After that experience, we reached a better breakdown - about 50/50 (not considering the house).  My revenge of “She is going to be sorry she pushed me to the limit.  I’d like to be around at the funeral where she’ll be sad that she was so mean to me”.

I can control only one person (me).  I tried to manipulate her - and I messed up.

Since then, I have done a lot of learning.  I have peace.  Money is just money, stuff is just stuff.

*****

In a recent scripture lesson, Jesus sends out his apostles two--by-two - but says don’t take a suitcase, don’t take money, don’t take anything but a walking stick.  Or as Job says “Naked came I into the world, and naked will I depart”.  Why build up a huge estate?

Revenge is a dead end, revenge doesn’t give any peace.  It might give you momentary joy as you see the other person suffer, but you get real peace (in this world and the next) by forgiving from the heart!!!

And it seems like revenge begets more revenge!!  Don’t mess with me because I’m going to pay you back “in spades”).

Yes, I've been writing about forgiving.  We don't have to forget, but we need to forgive - always forgive, love is patient, love is kind.  FORGIVE.

(Otherwise, your hatred will be eating away at your very being!!)

LOVE WINS!!!  FORGIVENESS WINS!!!
