Sunday Funday - August 23rd, 2020

 SUNDAY FUNDAY - AUGUST 23, 2020

What’s happening:

August 23 National Sponge Cake Day - it has been several years since I had sponge cake. I remember it with strawberries

August 24 Kobe Bryant Day and National Waffle Day - I have no idea is Kobe Bryant (famous professional basketball player) liked waffles. I do have a waffle maker but probably will not make waffles today. Yes, I really do like waffles - and the only way to eat waffles is with a lot of sugary syrup on them - and that isn't good for me.

August 25 National Banana Split Day and National Second Hand Wardrobe Day - I'd hate to calculate how much of my wardrobe is second hand. My friend Mary gave me lots (and lots) of things, and I do like to shop at Thrift shops - so very few items are really new.!! (And, if I eat too many banana splits I will need bigger clothes!!!

August 26 National Dog Day and Women’s Equality Day - NO - these two National days are NOT related - dogs are not women and women are not dogs!!!

August 28 National Red Wine Day and Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day - maybe you can remember your past dogs together. The "Rainbow Bridge" term seems to be used for the death of pets.

August 29 National Lemon Juice Day (I have a squeeze container of "Real Lemon". There are a few recipes that call for lemon.

Some interesting stuff:

https://www.endalznow.org/news/coming-soon-simple-blood-test-diagnosing-alzheimers-disease

“A promising new blood test for Alzheimer’s disease is now on the horizon.  The newly reported test proved to be just as reliable as more invasive and costly tests at detecting Alzheimer’s and may even be able to detect the disease as long as 20 years prior to symptoms.  This is an exciting new development that could make detecting the disease much easier and speed up enrollment in clinical trials.”

From http://www.homelandsecuritynewswire.com/dr20200808-official-u-s-adversaries-taking-sides-wielding-influence-ahead-of-election

Just in case you hadn’t heard “Russia, China and Iran are all actively meddling in U.S. presidential politics hoping to persuade American voters to put their preferred candidate in the White House, according to an extraordinary warning from Washington’s top counterintelligence official.

(Aside - do “we” (aka America / United States do this to other countries? Do we have parties, regimes, groups that we would prefer to be in power and using influence push for their election in other countries?)

http://www.homelandsecuritynewswire.com/dr20200803-growing-numbers-of-electric-vehicles-make-grid-planning-urgent

“Electric vehicles are coming—en masse. How can local utilities, grid planners, and cities prepare?

“According to EV Hub, about 1.5 million EVs, mostly cars and SUVs, are currently on the road in the U.S.

“ The good news is that through 2028, the overall power system, from generation through transmission, looks healthy up to 24 million EVs—about 9 percent of the current light-duty vehicle traffic in the U.S.

“However, at about 30 million EVs, things get dicey. At the local level, issues may arise at even smaller EV adoption numbers. That’s because one fast-charging EV can draw as much load as up to 50 homes. If, for example, every house in a cul-de-sac has an EV, one power transformer won’t be able to handle multiple EVs charging at the same time.”

I am eagerly looking forward to Electric Vehicles - and actually to autonomous vehicles (aka ‘self-driving’ vehicles).  But will the electrical grid be ready for all these electrical vehicles?

WFH - Work from Home

A study suggests that working from home can add pounds to your body.  Make sure you get enough activity.

VOTING

There have been concerns for voting by mail for the fall general elections. The Postmaster-General said “USPS will get "standby resources" ready for unexpected demand this fall, and reiterated yesterday that USPS is "ready today to handle whatever volume of election mail it receives."

*****

I worked for the primary election and the primary-runoff election in Williamson County Texas and we were well protected against COVID-19.  It will be interesting to see how a large (huge?) mail-in situation will work in a big election.  I don’t know if mail-in ballots are counted as they come in - or held to be counted on election day.  The TV networks love to forecast winners and losers - but if (say) 30% of the population votes by mail, the results might be slow if the votes aren’t counted early.
