 SUNDAY FUNDAY

JUNE 19, 2022

SUMMER IS HERE

And, it is getting hot.

We are in an era where pretty much all houses have air conditioning, cars have air conditioning, grocery stores, churches, restaurants, and other places have air conditioning.  And, if you have to go outside, you can go to a swimming pool.

Yes, we might have to speed it up a little to get from our house to the car, or from the car to the grocery store.

So, the question of the day is, “how did all those native Texans of 100 years ago survive?”

I was thinking the other day about getting a tan.  As a kid, I was always tan because during the summer I was always outside.

That led me to remember my worst sunburn experience.  A friend had invited me to her parent’s cabin on the Mississippi River for the weekend.  We went canoeing in the backwaters, picnicked, and swam on a sandbar, and by the time we went back to the cabin for dinner, I was as red as a lobster. She lathered aloe and lotion over me - and in the next week I peeled the skin off.

I’m sure you all have had sunburns.  If you are going to be outside at the hottest times of the day, be sure to wear sunscreen.  If you are doing your garden, go out early in the morning.

So, I found some “Dos and Don’ts for sunburn treatment”

Dos: Home remedies that can help sunburn.

  • Run cool or room-temperature water over the burn to soothe the pain.

  • Keep the skin clean using soap and water.

  • Moisturize the burn area using non-dyed, non-perfumed lotions, such as Aquaphor or Aveeno.

  • Take an over-the-counter medication, such as ibuprofen, at the first sign of sunburn to reduce pain and inflammation, as long as you don’t have any health reasons to not use these medications.

  • Seek professional care if you think you have an infection or severe sunburn.

Don’t: Never try these unhelpful treatments.

  • Ice: This can lead to frostbite, converting one injury to another.

  • Food products: Foods, beverages, or condiments such as mustard, ketchup, butter, and honey will not do your skin any favors.

  • Unusual chemicals: Such as gel from air fresheners, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. This will irritate your skin even more.

  • Antibiotics or antibiotic ointments: Especially if you’ve never used these types of treatments before. If you put them on irritated skin, you can get a skin rash, which will worsen the burn.

  • More sun: Don’t re-expose the burn to the sun while it’s healing.

JOKES AND STORIES

A tour bus driver is driving with a bus load of seniors down a highway when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady. She offers him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munches up.

After about 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder again and hands him another handful of peanuts.

She repeats this gesture about five more times.

When she is about to hand him another batch again he asks the little old lady, 'Why don't you eat the peanuts yourself?'

``We can't chew them because we've no teeth, she replied.

The puzzled driver asks, 'Why do you buy them then?'

The old lady replied, 'We just love the chocolate around them.'

What did the football coach say to the broken vending machine? Give me my quarterback.

What do lawyers wear to court? Lawsuits.

Why do seagulls fly over the sea? If they flew over the bay, they would be bagels.

A retired man now volunteers to entertain patients in assisted living homes and hospitals. He visited one hospital and brought along his portable keyboard.

After telling jokes and singing songs at patients’ bedsides, he said farewell and, “I hope you get better.” One elderly gentleman replied, “I hope you get better, too.”

TOP SITCOMS OF THE 1950s and 1960s

Here are some of my favorite sitcoms from the 50s and 60s - do you remember them?

Gomer Pyle - USMC - Gomer drives his drill sergeant crazy.  But eventually, we learned that Gomer had a great singing voice!!

(Gollie)

Gilligan Island - Skipper, Gilligan, the Howells, Professor, Ginger, Maryann.  Did every episode have a half-baked scheme to get off the island?

("little buddy")

Get Smart - Maxwell Smart, Agent 99, phone in his shoe.  The “cone of silence”.  And, somehow they got their assignment done!!!

I missed it be that much

Mr. Ed - the talking horse - styled loosely after Francis the Talking Mule movies

(You love me more than you love your wife)

I Love Lucy - Lucy’s antics.  Lucy always had some scheme that got her in trouble.

(Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to do!)

Beverly Hillbillies - the Clampett Family moves to Beverly Hills.  The banker loved their money (from oil well back in the south).  Granny made her concoctions (moonshine).  Jethro had a get-rich-quick scheme.  Ella Mae loved her animals.  ("Welllllll, doggies!")

Andy Griffith Show - Andy, Barney, Opie, and Aunt Bea.  Andy and Barney kept Mayberry safe from crooks.  Barney had a gun with one bullet.  And, Otis, the town drunk would check himself in periodically to a jail cell. (Nip it in the bud)

Hogan’s Heroes - American POWs in a German Concentration Camp.  They rescued allied POWs and thwarted German plans.  Schultz said” (I know ‘nothing’)
