According to an online dictionary, a maverick is defined as “an unorthodox or independent-minded person”
A second definition is An unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, traditionally considered the property of the first person who brands it.
The second definition has a historical concept behind it. Seemingly Samuel Maverick was a Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle - so he was a maverick - an independent person. And seemingly that definition became a standard for independence.
Some synonyms are:
individualist · nonconformist · free spirit · unorthodox person · unconventional person · original · trendsetter · bohemian · eccentric · outsider · rebel · dissenter · dissident · disruptor
MAVERICK ON TELEVISION
Like some of you, I grew up with “The Maverick” television show - with two Maverick brothers - Brett and Bart
James Garner was the original Bret Maverick and later Jack Kelly was brought in as brother Bart.
Wikipedia says, “Maverick is an American Western television series with comedic overtones created by Roy Huggins and originally starring James Garner as an adroitly articulate poker player plying his trade on riverboats and in saloons while traveling incessantly through the 19th-century American frontier. The show ran for five seasons from September 22, 1957, to July 8, 1962, on ABC.”
The show launched James Garner’s career including the Rockford Files, and movies like Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter.
*****
On the TV show Maverick, the brothers were card sharks and got into all kinds of situations during an episode (frequently with women). They were generally slow on the draw (not your typical ‘gunslinger’), but quick with the fist.

So, “maverick” as a term - “an unorthodox or independent-minded person”, Is that good? If we had too many unorthodox or independent people (or using one of the other terms “ nonconformist”) wouldn’t that lead to chaos?
Like a thousand drivers saying “I don’t want to conform to traffic signals”, or “the speed limit is only a suggestion” (that already seems to be the norm <grin>), or “paying taxes is not much fun, so I’m not going to conform to that practice this year”. That would be true chaos!!!
Can we be independent/unorthodox/non-conformist people?
Should we be independent/unorthodox/non-conformist people?
What might be the value to being independent/unorthodox/non-conformist people?
Might this get us out of our comfort zone?
Might we think clearer?

And, the “catch”!!
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
More on this for the rest of the week.
LOVE WINS!!!
