WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 2022, MAVERICKS - CONTINUED
According to an online dictionary, a maverick is defined as “an unorthodox or independent-minded person”
Some synonyms are:
individualist · nonconformist · free spirit · unorthodox person · unconventional person · original · trendsetter · bohemian · eccentric · outsider · rebel · dissenter · dissident · disruptor
Some positive aspects of mavericks:
“Mavericks are open to experience. What do I mean by that? They’re open to just enjoying, experiencing, and testing out new things. Whatever they haven’t done before, they’re willing to do right now, just to do it, for the sake of doing it.”
**
To me, being open to experience is being able to get outside one’s comfort zone.
Aside - many years ago, I was visiting a ranch in North Dakota at branding season. They also castrated the male bulls and later had “Rocky Mountain Oysters” (aka - the testicles of the males - breaded and cooked). Yes, I experienced this ‘delicacy’.
I am currently experiencing a lot of new things (as a woman).
Would I jump from an airplane (aka “skydive”)? - sure. Would I dive into shark-infested waters? (with the appropriate protection) - sure.

“Mavericks are also willing to stand their ground. Sometimes they’re called argumentative. Sometimes they just don’t fit in because they’re disagreeable. It’s because they have this willingness to stand their ground. When they know something is right when they know it is true in their gut. When they know that is the direction we all need to be moving in, they will not falter, they will stand their ground and drive everyone to that same conclusion.”
I think of the various inventors who defined their work - the light bulb, the telephone, the personal computer, the mobile phone. When people said “that won’t work”, they stood their ground.
I am using a photo of Microsoft in Albuquerque New Mexico with Bill Gates. Creative, innovative - and successful.

“Mavericks move forward regardless of criticism. Regardless of other people being by their side, regardless of whether you decide they’re right or wrong, a maverick will move forward. They will not falter, they will not be halted by other people saying, “This can’t be done”, “you’re doing it wrong”, and “you’re moving in the wrong direction”. They will absolutely grab a hold of that and go, “I got it, and I’m going for it anyway”. “I hear you and I’m going for it anyway”.
Although many said ‘it can’t be done, Columbus set out to reach the new world; Nasa engineers said ‘we can put a man on the moon - and they did it. People laughed at the ‘horseless carriage’ (and yet many of us ride in such a vehicle (car) every day).

“In general, mavericks have a low worry factor. They don’t worry about the consequences. They don’t worry about failure. They don’t worry about doing it wrong. They simply are moving forward regardless. The worry factor, or being neurotic about it isn’t in the equation, and the lower that is, the higher their ability to be a maverick is. They just don’t get that anxious feeling in their body and in their soul.”
Maybe mavericks are eternal optimists. They “believe” that everything will work out. Think again of Edison and the light bulb. He “believed” that he could make a light bulb that worked, and even with thousands of attempts finally got there.
I do take a little difference to this point. Some mavericks are under-funded - that is they don’t have enough money to make the idea work. They can fail - they can lose their money and have to take a ‘real’ job to survive.
Aside: I think of the Old Testament prophet Elijah - who was so sure of God that he challenged the prophets of Baal to a competition of getting a fire to occur. He doused his logs with water and then called on God to burn up the sacrificial offering - and God did (and meanwhile the prophets of Baal failed).
“Mavericks are obviously highly creative. Highly creative in what they do. They’re always looking for a way it hasn’t been done before. Let’s test it out. Maybe that’s the new way to do it. They’re looking for alternatives.”
Mavericks think outside the box. They are looking for new ways to approach the situation. “That’s the way it's always has been done” is nonsense to mavericks.
****
“They persevere. Mavericks never, ever, ever, ever give up.”
I do disagree - they sometimes are forced to give up but their brains are still working on the concept even though they aren’t.

Tomorrow, one more day of being a maverick.
Does Romans 12:2 point to being a maverick?
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. “
Being transformed into the image and likeness of God - is that radical? Is that (in the synonyms for ‘maverick’) being an individual, a non-conformist, or an unorthodox person?
Is trying to live a “LOVE WINS” life being a maverick? Is that transformational? Is that radical?
More tomorrow!!!
