TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2024 - HIKING ANGELS LANDING - AGAIN

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2024 - HIKING AND CLIMBING

Yesterday, I said, “I can’t,” to hiking Angels Landing in Zion National Park. Today, I am returning to that hike.

(From the internet:)

Climbing Angels Landing in your seventies is a remarkable achievement. It's considered a challenging hike due to its steep terrain, narrow ridge, and exposure to heights, and it demonstrates excellent fitness and a strong sense of adventure!

First, a side topic:

The outgoing president of the United States, Joe Biden, is 82. The incoming president, Donald Trump, is 78 (and I’m just a young 77!!!). Warren Buffet is 94 and leads a dynamic investment firm.

According to current records, the oldest person to hike the Appalachian Trail was M.J. "Nimblewill Nomad" Eberhart, who completed the trail at the age of 83. The AT is 2,200 miles (plus getting off trail for food, lodging, and showers!!).

Ah - I’m getting older - big deal.

****

In 2004, I did a half-marathon - WALK - not run.  I finished in the last 1% of entrants - and ahead of about eight people (boy, were they slow <grin>).

How did I prepare? I walked about 8 to 12 miles a day, which was about two to three hours a day. (Yes, I was still teaching online over the summer, but I made the time to walk at the Quinnipiac University Fitness Center—and on the track, not on a treadmill.)

*****

TIME-OUT - Karen, yesterday you said “I CAN” T.  Is that true?

*****

It is about attitude.  If I can do it sometime - and work at it appropriately, I CAN make it.  If I walk 8 to 12 miles daily (or about three hours daily), I could make the Angel Landing hike.

But it depends on attitude, perseverance, and setting goals and sticking to them. Do I want to hike Angels Landing? I’m not sure yet. I like my slow life now. I like doing my Duolingo lessons, playing Words with Friends, and more.

I would set a goal - (smart goal) - and work for it.  If I worked diligently towards that goal, I’d be ready by my 78th birthday (pending no accidents and no physical complications).

I CAN’T is a mental constraint. The main limitation is that I “don’t want to.” I want to sit in my nice (but messy) apartment.

*****

Hmmm - to be continued.

LOVE WINS

And love wins when I make it the primary goal in my life - not just a sometimes thing.

LOVE TRANSFORMS

And love transforms only when I pursue the path of LOVE
