SUNDAY FUNDAY - JANUARY 13, 2022

SUNDAY FUNDAY - JANUARY 13, 2022

Saturday Morning Television (as a kid)

I grew up with three television stations - a CBS station, an NBC station, and an ABC station.  (I don’t remember when PBS started in my area)

Our neighbors got television first and I remember (vaguely) watching “Highway Patrol” with Brodrick Crawford with my neighbor.  As a naive kid, I somehow thought this was real and was amazed at what they did.

We also had Matchbox cars that we played in the dirt at the end of the driveway.  I loved making cloverleaf intersections in the dirt.  (Alas, they eventually paved our street and that lovely dirt from a gravel road ended)

Most of the week, I didn’t watch much television, but Saturday Morning was television time.

There were the adventure/cowboy shows.  The Lone Ranger was a televised version of an old radio show (but I didn’t know that).  Clayton Moore was the Lone Ranger with Jay Silverheels as Tonto. His horse was “Silver” - so “Heigh-ho Silver, away”  Tonto’s horse was Scout.

In some respects, it was a barrier breaker to have a Native American as a good guy on television!!

I read that “Hopalong Cassidy watches outsold Mickey Mouse watches 3 to 1 in 1952. Under Bill Boyd’s guidance, Hopalong Cassidy grossed over $70mm in merchandise that same year.”  Topper was his horse.

********

Gene Autry with Champion (the Wonder Horse), and Pat Buttram - was so famous that a small town in Oklahoma changed its name to Gene Autry for their local idol.  “I’m back in the saddle again”.  Autry wrote some famous Christmas songs including Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, “Santa Claus is coming to town”, and “Here comes Santa Claus”.

********

And, of course, Roy Rogers (with Trigger), Dale Evans (with Buttermilk), and Pat Brady with Nellybell the Jeep.  “Happy Trails to you, until we meet again”

And, others - Sky King, Rin-Tin-Tin, Lassie, Sgt. Preston of the Mounties, My Friend Flicka, and Fury.

(Those were the days - carefree and fun)
