SUNDAY - FUNDAY, JANUARY 23, 2022

 SUNDAY - FUNDAY

JANUARY 23, 2022

WARM-UP.

Three-fourths of the way through January 2022.  We’d had some cold days and some warm days.  But, it seems as if the cold days will be around for a while.  (I guess I’m getting to be a Texan - my South Dakota, upper-midwest, and even Connecticut blood has gotten thinned out by the 100+ days of summer, so anything under 50 is cold!!)

And, just remember these days next July and August!!!

TELEVISION MEMORIES - PART II

Last week, I wrote about westerns. But, maybe my favorite kid’s show was Rocky and Bullwinkle.  The scripts were predictable but funny on a variety of levels.

In one series of adventures, Bullwinkle is the heir of his uncle Dewlap and his mine - located on Mt. Flatten.  But the mine has Upsidaisium - a rock that floats up in the air.  Of course, the bad guys (Boris and Natasha) want to get the mine and the ore as well.

Or, Bullwinkle finds the Kerwood Derby which makes the wearer the smartest man in the world. (That was a play on words of Durward Kirby, who was the announcer for the Garry Moore show at the time).

And Bullwinkle’s Grandma’s famous Mooseberry cake is really a rocket fuel - and of course, the evil duo wants the recipe for Fearless leader.

Plus, the half-hour show included Fractured Fairly tales, Peabody and his boy, Sherman, and sometimes other features like Dudley Do-Right (where the horse always got the girl).  Aesop and son fables and Bullwinkle poetry corner.  Corny - but very appealing to me as a pre-teen kid.!!!

AH, THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Here are some wonderful examples of our marvelous language:

The bandage was wound around the wound

The farm was used to produce produce

The dump was so full, that they had to refuse refuse

We must polish the Polish furniture

He could lead if he got the lead out

The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert

There is no time like the present, so he thought it was time to present his present

A bass was painted on the bass drum

When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes

I did not object to the object

The insurance was invalid for the invalid

The was a row among the oarsmen about how to row

They were too close to the door to close it

If womb is pronounced as “woom”, and tomb is pronounced as “toom”, why isn’t bomb pronounced as “boom”?

I was reading that the English word that has the most meanings is “RAN”.  What do you think?

I NEED TO TRAVEL MORE:

I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family, and work. I live close, so it’s a short drive.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go and I try not to visit there too often.

I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age, I need all the stimuli I can get!

And, sometimes I think I am in Vincible but life shows me I am not.

People keep telling me I’m in Denial but I’m positive I’ve never been there before!

So far, I haven’t been in Continent, but my travel agent says I’ll be going soon. Also, if you have to go to Shitz Creek in a canoe, be sure to bring an extra paddle!!

NATIONAL DAYS

NATIONAL PIE DAY - January 23 - National Day Calendar

As you can imagine, I love pies.  Cherry pie, peach pie, and a lot more.  (I will admit to not being much of a Texan as pecan pie is not one of my favorites!!

Every time I went to HEB for the past two months, I’ve looked for mincemeat - so I could make a mincemeat pie.  (which doesn’t have meat).  I might have to order some online!!!  It’s not quite a favorite, but I just wanted something different!!!

NATIONAL COMPLIMENT DAY - January 24 - National Day Calendar

Everybody needs a compliment - “You sure are looking good today, <name>”, “That’s a nice sweater”, “Have you lost weight?”.  But, as the link suggests: “To give a great compliment, first be sincere.”

NATIONAL IRISH COFFEE DAY - January 25 - National Day Calendar

“National Irish Coffee Day kicks off January 25th each year with a mug of strong coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and topped with a layer of cream. “

I generally don’t drink coffee with cream (or whiskey), but a few times out of the year it is a refreshing beverage.

NATIONAL PEANUT BRITTLE DAY - January 26 - National Day Calendar

My parents (when they ran a candy store) made the BEST peanut brittle - generally very thin, and melt in your mouth!!!

*****

CLASHING CLOTHES DAY - January 27, 2022 - National Today

I know of people whose clothes clash unintentionally, but this is a day to wear checks and polka dots with stripes, lime green with orange, or any combination you’d like!!!  (I’ll add - the gaudier, the better???)

***

NATIONAL FUN AT WORK DAY - January 28, 2022 - National Today

I’ve generally had fun at work.  When I taught, it seemed as if my favorite word was “WOOO”.  Having fun, enjoying my colleagues, enjoying my clients (students, residents) is a great way to enjoy life!!!

NATIONAL PUZZLE DAY - January 29, 2022 - National Today

The link says “January 29 is National Puzzle Day, the perfect day to do a little brain exercise. Whether it’s a crossword, jigsaw, or Sudoku, puzzles engage our brain in more ways than one. Scientists have discovered that when we work on a jigsaw puzzle, we utilize both sides of the brain, improving memory, cognitive function, and problem-solving skills in the process. By utilizing puzzles, people can stimulate the brain to improve a number of skills.”

LOGIC PROBLEM:

Diana, Judy, Avis, and Shirley all attend the same summer camp, where they can cook, kayak, rock climb, and zip-line. Each lady has a different favorite activity.

Diana’s favorite activity isn’t rock climbing.

Judy is afraid of heights.

Avis can’t do her favorite activity without a harness.

Shirley likes to keep her feet on the ground at all times.

Can you figure out who likes what?

WRAP-UP

Another week. Stay warm and let LOVE WINS!!
