MISCELLANEOUS NOVEMBER INFORMATION
November, the 11th month of the year, has 30 days and marks the beginning of the winter holiday season for most folks, even if the winter solstice doesn’t occur until late December.
November is named for the ninth month in the early Roman calendar and is a social time of community suppers, feasts of thanksgiving, and general elections.
November’s full Moon is traditionally called the Beaver Moon. In the Colonial Era, this was the month to set one’s beaver traps before the swamps froze and beavers retired to their lodges, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs.
In 2022, November’s full Moon occurs on Tuesday, November 8. (Same as election day, and): And here’s a fun fact: This is the first time in U.S. history that we’re enjoying an Election Day Total Lunar Eclipse. It’s never happened before and won’t happen again until 2394. A little spooky? Truly, it’s just a coincidence of how calendars work, but think what you will!
In our area, the best part of the eclipse will be from about 4:15 until 5:15. (You can miss it and catch it on the morning news on the 9th (with the election news), or you can get up and watch it!!!)
November’s traditional birthstone is the topaz, usually a yellow to amber color. The ancient Greeks believed that topaz could make a wearer invisible. A symbol of honor and strength, topaz was also believed to bring longevity and wisdom.
November’s birth flower is the chrysanthemum. Generally, chrysanthemums represent cheerfulness. A red one conveys “I love you.” White symbolizes truth or pure love. A yellow one indicates slighted love.
COLORFUL CRANBERRY for the CURIOUS
By the beginning of November, nearly all of the cranberry crop should have been harvested. Millions and millions of the hard, little, tart, ruby berries grown in the bogs of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon, and the Maritime provinces of Canada will have been bagged fresh or earmarked for juice or canned sauce.
The cranberry is a genuine American native plant, Vaccinium macrocarpon, a member of the heath family and a relative of the blueberry and huckleberry.
The Pequot Native Americans of Cape Cod called the berry ibimi, meaning “bitter berry,” and combined crushed cranberries with dried venison and fat to make a winter superfood called pemmican.
The Pilgrims and those who followed appreciated the wild berries but did not start to cultivate them until 1816, when a bog was planted and tended in the town of Dennis on Cape Cod. By then, American and Canadian sailors on long voyages knew they could eat cranberries to protect themselves from scurvy—making them a cranberry counterpart to British “limeys.”
The cranberry is a native superfood and is good for you! They’re packed with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant compounds.
NATIONAL DAYS
NATIONAL SAXOPHONE DAY - November 6, 2022 - National Today
National Saxophone Day is celebrated on November 6, on the birthday of Antoine-Joseph ‘Adolphe’ Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. This soulful instrument has a rich history and musical range. We love the saxophone and what it brings to both the classical- and jazz music worlds. This incredibly unique musical invention is the only instrument to be created by solely one person as well as the woodwind family’s only brass instrument.
In common usage, you’ll find soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass saxophones.
NATIONAL KEITH DAY - November 7, 2022 - National Today
I know some men named "Keith", but I have two friends (husband and wife) with the last name of "Keith"!!!
ABET AND AID PUNSTERS DAY - November 8, 2022 - National Today
Abet and Aid Punsters Day is celebrated on November 8 every year. When all of us are experiencing withdrawals from October festivities, Abet and Aid Punsters Day comes to the rescue with poor jokes and terrible puns. The day encourages us to loosen up and laugh with each other. It is a celebration dedicated to laughter and making each other laugh with jokes, puns, and pranks. Sometimes the best way to cheer up is by indulging in silly or dad jokes. Instead of rolling your eyes at yet another bad pun, laugh along and come up with original punny jokes!

GO TO AN ART MUSEUM DAY - November 9, 2022 - National Today
Remember how excited you were to go on a field trip to the museum as a kid? The first thing on your mind was probably, “Yeah, no class!” but a big part of the appeal was the thought of going on an adventure. And art’s all about exploration—that’s why we celebrate Go to an Art Museum Day on November 9. More than 30,000 museums around the world participate, and each year even has a different theme. (When I went to Amsterdam four years ago I went to the Van Gogh Museum - and when we were in Connecticut, about every other month we did the two major Yale art museums).
International Accounting Day. November 10, (nationaltoday.com)
November 10th is designated as International Accounting Day. Does the sight of a ledger book make your head spin? That’s why we have accountants to figure it all out. Your job, school, bank, religious institution, and the government wouldn’t survive without those dedicated number crunchers. That’s why we have a day out of the year “earmarked” just to celebrate them!’
VETERANS DAY 2022 - NOVEMBER 11, 2022 National Today
Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11, is a tribute to military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Not to be confused with Memorial Day, which honors those who died while in service, Veterans Day honors all military veterans, including those still with us.
It is the 11th day of the 11th month - symbolizing the peace after World War I.
