BRIDGE BRAT BULLETIN

Thursday, January 14, 2021

Happy Thursday Bridge Brats!!!

One month to Valentine’s Day!!!  Maybe all of us (currently none that I know of), who have been vaccinated can have a Valentine’s Party at my apartment!!!  (Note, I have a small apartment!!!)

My health provider (Baylor, Scott, and White) indicated they would be getting vaccines in the next week and those over 65 would be eligible.  Let’s see!!!

How are you doing with “pandemic cabin fever”?  I’m getting tired of isolation.  I don’t try to push it as I do know people who have (or had) COVID-19.  I did a test before Thanksgiving and was negative - but that was a “snapshot”.  I feel good - and think I’m okay - but I have decided that I will get the vaccination when it becomes available.

I’m doing some coaching (life coaching) lately.  (I need to keep busy).  As some of you know, I do a daily blog, plus try to get five miles walking (if I can).  Hopefully, we all are getting some exercise.

WORD PUZZLES

I think the Wuzzles went over nicely last week, so here are five more.  See if you can figure out the word phase.  I tried to get hard ones!!!  (Next week I have some great logic puzzles - watch out!!  David is kayaking across Lake Georgetown, going with the wind, he crosses the lake in XX time, going back it takes him YY time.  What is his speed in Stillwater?  - But, that’s in Oklahoma!!!!)

PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL

I used to follow both college and professional football.  I just had to look up who won the NCAA National Division I football championship between Ohio State and Alabama (when you don’t have a TV you miss things like this).

This coming weekend we have:

Los Angeles Rams at the Frozen Tundra - Green Bay Packers

Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills

Cleveland Browns at the Kansas City Chiefs

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the New Orleans Saints

Do you have any favorites?

I became a Green Bay fan years ago - as my first teaching position was in Wisconsin.  I did have a cheese head (but, alas that has been lost).  I like the concept that if the Packers decided to leave Green Bay, the city “kind of” owns them, and the city (or the American Legion of Green Bay) would get the money!!!

And, the Superbowl is almost an American Holiday!!!  (If I remember, it is the day in the United States with the most pizza, most wings, and maybe the most beer sales!!!)   (Last year, a friend invited people over to watch on his rented huge projected screen.  He was originally from the Kansas City area - and was enthusiastic about a Chief's win!!!)

MORE FUN - some COVID jokes

Why did the chicken cross the road?  Because the chicken behind it didn’t know how to socially distance properly.

Two grandmothers were bragging about their precious darlings. One of them says to the other, “Mine are so good at social distancing, they won’t even call me.”

Who’s idea was it to sing “Happy Birthday” while washing your hands? Now every time I go to the bathroom, my kids expect me to walk out with a cake.

My husband purchased a world map and then gave me a dart and said, “Throw this and wherever it lands—that’s where I’m taking you when this pandemic ends.” Turns out, we’re spending two weeks behind the fridge.

Ran out of toilet paper and started using lettuce leaves. Today was just the tip of the iceberg, tomorrow romaines to be seen.  (ouch!!!)

My mom always told me I wouldn’t accomplish anything by lying in bed all day. But look at me now, ma! I’m saving the world!

After years of wanting to thoroughly clean my house but lacking the time, this week I discovered that wasn’t the reason.

If I keep stress-eating at this level, the buttons on my shirt will start socially distancing from each other.    (Is that the reason Vickie?)

Every few days try your jeans on just to make sure they fit. Pajamas will have you believe all is well in the kingdom.

Yesterday I ran out of soap and body wash and all I could find was dish detergent. Then it Dawned on me.

SO WHAT SPECIAL DAYS ARE AHEAD?

January 15, Martin Luther King birthday

Plus, we’ll have a Federal Holiday for Martin Luther King day on Monday, January 18

January 17, National Hot Buttered Rum day

Okay, (admission), I’ve never had Hot Buttered Rum.  Maybe when COVID is over, we can have a BridgeBrats party (probably not at my 582 square foot apartment) with Hot Buttered Rum!!  (Bob and Shirley are you paying attention???)

January 18, National Thesaurus Day

Like when I’m tired of the same old words and phrases I can check the thesaurus for some adroit words!!!

January 20 - National Cheese Lover’s Day

I think I’ve mentioned before that my favorite cheese is American (is that even really a cheese?)

My grandfather loved Limburger Cheese (I have no idea of what it tastes like, but it was so super smelly!!!)

HISTORICAL DAYS

Today, January 14, is the birthday of Albert Schweitzer (1875).  He is noted for his philosophy “Reverence for Life”.  Now, for me, the Albert Schweitzer Institute is located at Quinnipiac University - where I taught for 13 years and has an emphasis on peace, and health care.

January 15, 1967 - The Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the first super bowl!!

It wasn’t even a sellout crowd!!! I understand that some of the players we drunk the night before!!

January 16, 1919 - Prohibition was ratified by the states!!  The Great American morality plan.  (And, the rise in bootleggers, and organized crime).  (Aside - my grandmother was active in the WCTU - Women’s Christian Temperance Union - no alcohol as I grew up!!)

January 17, 1966 - The Monkees television show premieres!!!  (I bet many of you remember them). "Hey, hey, we're the Monkees and people say we monkey around

But we're too busy singing To put anybody down"

January 20, 1981 - Iran hostage crisis ends.

Yes, on his inauguration on January 20, 1981, Ronald Reagan got the hostages released.

WRAP-UP

So, here we are - trying to make sense of what all is going on around us, trying to love one another.

I’ve taken the motto “Love Wins”.  I believe we all are made in the image and likeness of God (however you perceive Him/Her/Force/Infinity).  To me, I can't ‘hate’ anybody (even after I go down four tricks - after all, that was my partner's fault!! )

I eagerly look forward to some kind of ‘normal’ (will there ever be a real normal again in our lifetimes?)

HUGS!!!

Karen
