FRIDAY MARCH 19, 2021 - LOVE WINS

 FRIDAY MARCH 19, 2021 - LOVE WINS

(This would have been the 108th birthday of my mother - who died at age 98.  She was definitely a grand woman - and a great mother!!!)

With the mention of my mother, let’s look at honoring your parents.  In the Judeo-Christian tradition, the Ten Commandments are considered foundational.  Commandment #5 is “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

Okay, you’ve heard that.  Have you done it?

“But my mother was a mean-spirited, negative person”. (I understand that - that will be NEXT FRIDAY’s LOVE WINS post!!!)

******

In terms of Biblical writings we have these:

Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

Matthew 15:4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’

Proverbs 30:17 The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.

Exodus 21:17 “Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death.

Proverbs 20:20 “If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.

Leviticus 19:32 ““You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.

Proverbs 29:17 “Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.

Proverbs 17:6 “Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.

Sirach 3:12-13 “My child, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him as long as he lives; even if his mind fails, be patient with him; because you have all your faculties do not despise him.

Sirach 3: 3-7 “Those who honor their father atone for sins, and those who respect their mother are like those who lay up treasure.  Those who honor their father will have joy in their own children, and when they pray they will be heard. Those who respect their father will have a long life, and those who honor their mother obey the Lord; they will serve their parents as their masters.

Some really “hit” me - like Proverbs 17:6 “Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.

I love (adore) my grandchildren.  There is an expression “If I knew grandchildren would have been so much fun, I would have had them first!!”

***

Or this one: Sirach 3:12-13 “My child, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him as long as he lives; even if his mind fails, be patient with him; because you have all your faculties do not despise him.

I know some people (living and dead) who have (had) dementia or Alzheimer’s - and their minds failed them. Be patient - LOVE WINS!!!

***

And another - Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father who gave you life and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Some people get real crabby and hard to live with when they age.  And, we are directed “do not despise them”.

I like the concept that LOVE WINS - and that implies the loveable (like our grandchildren), and the not-so-loveable (like crabby old people).

Next Friday I’m going to write about loving those that aren’t so loveable.

LOVE WINS!!

HUGS!!
