WEDNESDAY MARCH 24, 2021 - ATTITUDE 2

 WEDNESDAY MARCH 24, 2021 - ATTITUDE 2

You can adjust your attitude - yes you can!!!! (Really, yes - I can ....)

It was one of ‘those’ mornings.  I didn’t sleep well.  The thunderstorm that blew through woke me up, and it seemed to last ‘forever.  (And, of course, it was about midnight - and kept me awake).  I’m trying to do the intermittent fasting - and I sure was hungry - and cranky.  I know it is a good thing (the intermittent fasting), but after seventy years of eggs, oatmeal, or cold cereal and mass messaging that “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” are stuck in my brain.

I was substitute teaching (in a special education classroom for the second day in a row).  And -(as you know), I knew I wasn’t going to get my nap!!  Did I dare ask my colleagues at the middle school to let me go to the library (where I took a 10-minute nap Monday).  Yes, even Pollyanna can have one of ‘those’ mornings.

I found myself being frustrated with myself.  I found myself grumbling to myself “if I would have gotten to bed a little earlier last night”; “if those lights would have been green”; “if traffic would have moved faster”.  Then I stopped my negative thoughts.

Like many times before and after that morning, I learned that I could (and ‘must’) adjust my attitude.  Life was good, it was going to work out.

A favorite quote from Zig Ziglar is: “You are what you are and where you are because of what has gone into your mind. You can change what you are and where you are by changing what goes into your mind.”  I needed to change MY MIND - and to change what was going into my mind - my own negative thoughts.  I knew I could change my attitude - and change those negative thoughts into positive thoughts.

“I can do it” is a favorite mantra; and even better is “I will do it, with expertise, grace, and knowledge that I am on top of it”. (what ‘it’ is that I am doing).

We sneak negative thoughts into our heads all the time - and I, for one, know that I can overcome those negative thoughts by putting positive ones in place.

In World War II (the year 1944) Bing Crosby sang “You've got to accentuate the positive; Eliminate the negative; Latch on to the affirmative; Don't mess with Mister In-Between”.

There are thousands of speakers, blogs, websites that agree on this - be positive.  Norman Vincent Peale wrote “The Power of Positive Thinking” in 1952; Tony Robbins has made millions speaking on the topic.

For me (which may or may not work for you), if I can get some “me” time - reflective time, walking time, turn my TV (Yes - I don’t have a TV) off, turn my computer off; turn my phone off; walk - stretch - meditate and reflect seem to work.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

I have to watch what I say - especially what I say to MYSELF!!!

*****

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

This verse is becoming more important to me - I need to focus - I need to change!!
