SUNDAY FUNDAY - MAY 2, 2021 - IT'S MAY

 SUNDAY FUNDAY - MAY 2, 2021

IT’S MAY!!!!

May - ah, yes, May!!

One of the first musicals I saw (as a movie) was Camelot. I like Camelot -a good and evil story.  Poor King Arthur who (by the legend), pulled the sword out of the stone, gets paired up with Guinevere - the kind of worldly adventurous type.  Arthur is sometimes clueless “How to handle a woman”, and Guinevere seems to love everybody - and not always just “agape” - and sometimes “eros” ways.

Guinevere sings “The Lusty Month of May”

Tra la, it's May, the lusty month of May
That lovely month when everyone goes blissfully astray
Tra la, it's here, that shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts merrily appear

It's May, it's May that gorgeous holiday
When every maiden prays that her lad will be a cad
It's mad, it's gay, a libelous display
Those dreary vows that everyone takes, everyone breaks
Everyone makes divine mistakes, the lusty month of May

It's May, the lusty month of May
That darling month when everyone throws self-control away
It's time to do a wretched thing or two
And try to make each precious day, one you'll always rue

It's May, it's May, the month of yes you may
The time for every frivolous whim, proper or im
It's wild, it's gay, a blot in every way
The birds and bees with all of their vast amorous past
Gaze at the human race aghast

Guinevere can throw self-control away!!  She seems to have the idea that life is fun and games.  (Who knows, maybe she is right!!!)

Yes, it is MAY - a luscious spring month - even more green, more flowers, more action, and more love than April - and (in my humble opinion - IMHO) better than June, July, and August!!!

To me, May was flowers - lilacs, flowering crab apples, forsythias, and graduation.  The end of the school and summer vacation either starts around the end of May or early in June.

Teachers are tired of their students, students are tired of their teachers.  I remember in May, after graduation thinking “I hope never to see another student again”, only to have that thought replaced about the first of July with the new plans to make my courses even better.

I liked my teaching, and I liked my students - but!!  I remember a * single academic friend in the sciences who found all kinds of National Science Foundation-funded trips for the summer.  Ocean biology, ecology of the mountains, study of the habits of beetles.  She confided in me that she found out after her first years and teaching summer school when fall classes started again, she found herself wondering ‘where did summer go?

I loved going to Citibank for twelve summers.  A great change of pace (and almost an alumni reunion).  A non-DSU friend would say when I arrived for my first day “Ah, it’s summer, Professor White is here.”

I got out of that habit in Connecticut.  I worked a summer in Hartford, and it just wasn’t a fit for me (or them).  Then I generally taught a summer class.  (Get that money, make that money, save that money, build up that Social Security fund, buy a new car, help the economy [and be part of the rat race!!]).

But it is May!!!  Let’s not think about summer for another month!!!

NATIONAL DAYS FOR THE NEXT WEEK

A lot of events for yesterday (May 1st)

Kentucky Derby

Beer Pong Day

May Day

National Bombshells Day

National Mother Goose Day

(And More)

From National Mother Goose Day, we have this::

We are swept back to memories of our childhood whenever we hear of National Mother Goose Day on May 1. From Humpty Dumpty’s clumsy fall and the Three Little Pigs’ scramble for houses to Pinnochio’s elongated nose, fairy tales and nursery rhymes endlessly entertained us as kids whilst providing us with important life lessons. Charles Perrault, a French author, is thought to have been the first writer to establish fairy tales as a separate genre in 1695. Fast-forward a little further into the future, the Grimm fairy tales, which were published during the 19th century, have now become quite famous worldwide. Thanks to Disney, the Grimm fairy tales have become more child-friendly but, originally, they were gruesome in their details. For example, in the original version of “Snow White,” her stepmother died after being cursed to dance in glass heels forever.

I loved the various Mother Goose rhymes as a kid and read them to my children, and to my grandchildren.

Yes, “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.  All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again.”

Jumping ahead:

Tuesday, May 4th is Star Wars Day

I sometimes say God - the infinite - as He (the traditional Judeo-Christian pronoun), She (the feminized version), It, or The Force.  The infinite, all-powerful force around us.

Of course, May 4th is Star Wars Day as the common blessing was “May the Force be With you” (or … May fourth be with you).  In some religious contexts, we say “May the Spirit be with you” as a blessing.

As I understand the first Star Wars (which is called Episode 4) was kind of an unknown - but when it took off, it spawned sequels and prequels, and spin-offs, and TOYS!!!  My son has so many Star Wars figures and toys!!!  My grandchildren all have Star Wars shirts as well.

May 5th - Cinco De Mayo Day

This is NOT Mexican independence day - but a celebration of a battle victory.  (And, anymore - at least in the United States - a day to drink margaritas, eat Mexican food, and have fun!!!)

(And, if will - the totally false Cinco de Mayo story)

It seems the Mexican people loved mayonnaise.  Everything had mayo on top of it.  Well, a huge ship was coming from England to Mexico with every inch loaded with mayonnaise.  But, somehow, the French Navy thought it was a warship - and sank the vessel loaded with Mayos - or the “sinko of de Mayo” - groan!!!  And ever since, the Mexican food culture does not use mayo but salsa!!!

May 6 - National Day of Prayer

To me, prayer is vital to who I am.  The National Day of Prayer generally has a public part - and the encouragement of a private part of prayer.

May 6th also is National Nurses Day and National Password Day.

You do know the international requirements of passwords?  16 to 64 characters - upper and lower, with at least six Chinese (or Japanese) characters; at least six special characters (that do not appear on a standard keyboard), and numbers - including things like the square root of three, irrational, and complex numbers!!!

TODAY IN HISTORY

May 3 In Hernandez v. Texas, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment applied to all racial and ethnic groups facing discrimination, effectively broadening civil rights laws to include Hispanics and all other non-whites.

May 4 the Kent State “Massacre” ‘On May 4, 1970, in Kent, Ohio, 28 National Guardsmen fire their weapons at a group of anti-war demonstrators on the Kent State University campus, killing four students, wounding eight, and permanently paralyzing another. The tragedy was a watershed moment for a nation divided by the conflict in Vietnam and further galvanized the anti-war movement.

May 5, 1961 - Alan Shepherd becomes the first American in space!!!

May 6, 1994 - The English Channel Tunnel opens!!!

May 07, 1994, Edvard Munch’s painting "The Scream" recovered after theft

CONCLUSION

So, May 2nd, 2021.  Hopefully with Covid on the run.  Over 50% of American adults have been vaccinated.  There are those who don’t believe in the vaccine.  There are still way too many cases of Covid going on. India seems to be especially hard hit.

I have been thinking about cutting back on my daily blogs - maybe three a week.  Do you want me to keep writing daily? Let me know!!!

(And, I am having surgery on May 7th - so I may not be blogging for a while)

LOVE WINS!!

HUGS!!
