 FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2022 - SPIRITUAL FOCUS

On Fridays, I write about spiritual things.  This won’t always be the Gospel from the common lectionary from the previous Sunday, but today it will be.

Luke 10:38-42

“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Ah yes, Mary and Martha.  Martha is the busy person - fixing food and getting out the plates, cups, and utensils.  (I can only imagine what it might have been like then - these days, we’d get paper plates, paper or plastic cups, and plastic spoons).

But, Mary is sitting and listening to Jesus.  She wants to hear every word that he says.  

The message is simple - do we want to be busy, or do we want to sit at the feet of our First Century Jewish Rabbi?  I know my answer - sit at Jesus’ feet!!!

My appetite will always be around, but letting Jesus’ words heal, change, and inspire me is the “better choice”.

I’m retired and my options are more open, but spending time with Jesus is important to me.  Spending some time writing about faith is important to me.  

So, what do you choose?  I think there are three options:  being busy like Martha, being at the feet of Jesus like Mary, and not interested at all.  Maybe our jobs are too important, maybe our spouse and family are too important, or maybe my “other” life is just too important.  What will it be?  What is your priority?
