SUMMER TRAVEL / NATIONAL PARKS

I really haven’t been to many of the National Parks and I would like to go.  My family went to Yellowstone National Park when I was a teenager and just started to use a camera. (The pictures are somewhere - as 35 mm slides!!!)  Yellowstone is so varied - geysers, water, mountains, animal life, (don’t feed the bears or the bison), - and lots of people.

We had a cabin at Old Faithful - and I remember it got super cold that evening. (I’m thinking it was June).  And, the bears raided the trash cans around Old Faithful.  But, Old Faithful - was - faithful and erupts about 100 feet into the air about every 90 minutes.

There are those that go into Yellowstone in the winter on snowmobiles.  It can get as cold as minus 66 degrees (hmmm - time to jump into a hot geyser - except Old Faithful is about 204 degrees Fahrenheit - because of the elevation, water boils at 199 in Yellowstone).

In June 2022, there was some flooding and the northern loop going through the park was closed.

If you make Yellowstone, you should also go to Grand Teton National Park.  The mountains are amazing!!!

*****

Some day (maybe I need to put it on my “bucket list”), I’d like to go to Yosemite National Park, Glacier National Park, and the Utah parks (Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonland, Capitol Reef, and Grand Canyon.

I’m double-minded on visiting Big Bend National Park.  Some say it is interesting, and others say it is monotonous. A link says, “With an average yearly visitation of less than 300,000, Big Bend is one of the least visited national parks, and yet its diversity of plants, animals, and geology make it one of the most fascinating.”

(And, if I do go to Big Bend National Park, it will NOT be in summer - and it will NOT be alone!!!  Any takers?)

Aside.  Our National Parks are awesome - but can be overrun with tourists.  Bear/bison/moose sightings can back up traffic for miles.  And, yes, it is neat to get a picture of a bear eating your sandwich but that ultimately encourages the wild animals to become scavengers.  I’d hate to see our parks become “tour bus only” places.  Cars pollute the clean air, people trample the grass and paths and can destroy vegetation and the ecology.

PUZZLES

As a child, I loved jigsaw puzzles.  When I got an allowance I would frequently buy a puzzle.  As an adult, my mother asked me to take my puzzles before they sold their house.  I wish I would have taken them all, but didn’t have room for them then!!!.  I did take four puzzles - that now are on a shelf in my closet.

Lately, I’ve been assembling puzzles from the Georgetown Public Library.  (I know some of you also do jigsaw puzzles). I have one table in my apartment and I don’t like to leave a puzzle for days on that table, so I prefer the 300-piece puzzles I can do in a few hours.  Last week I opted for a 500-piece puzzle that occupied my table for several days.  I finished it yesterday - whew - my table is free again!!!  I may try for a 500-piece puzzle again - but not for a while.

In college, a friend gave me a 3000-piece puzzle and it seemed like it took years to finish (well - maybe months).  At my part-time job at the Wesleyan independent living facility there are some dedicated jigsaw puzzle people - and almost always doing 1000-piece puzzles.  When I have five minutes I sit and try to put in a few pieces.

NATIONAL DAYS

As you know, I like to look at the events that get put in the “National Today Calendar”. There are fun events, food events, cultural and religious events, and even birthdays.  So, here is my list for next week:

BARN DAY - July 10, 2022 - National Today

Growing up in Eastern Iowa, I saw a lot of barns.  I had relatives on farms and I liked wandering through the barns.  I’ve also been to several State Farms and always have to wander through the animal barns at the farms.

Barns are somewhat threatened.  Galvanized metal barns have replaced the traditional wood barns.  Horses for plowing have been replaced by tractors.  Corporate farms raise cows, chickens, hogs, and more.  Family farms characterized by red barns are changing.

[Aside - our son, Steve White, is a newscaster in Grand Island Nebraska.  When the Nebraska State Fair - which had been held in the state capital of Lincoln - was moved to Grand Island in 2010, he covered the fair and got the nickname “Mr. State Fair”.

He emcees some of the State Fair events and almost lives at the fair during the duration of the fair!!

CHEER UP THE LONELY DAY - July 11, 2022 - National Today

I know that some of you do visit shut-in friends.  This might be a good day to stop in and say “hi” to some of your friends.  (You can use some of the jokes from today’s blog!!)

NATIONAL DIFFERENT COLORED EYES DAY - July 12, 2022 - National Today

I had a student years ago who had two different colored eyes.  The link suggests that about 1% of the population has this feature.  (It also indicates that some of these people use a colored contact lens to disguise this feature!!!).  Do you know anybody with two different colored eyes?

NATIONAL BEANS ‘N’ FRANKS DAY - July 13, 2022 - National Today

The link suggests:

“The United States commemorates National Bean’ N’ Frank Day every year on July 13. The purpose of this particular meal day is to celebrate the uniqueness of one of America’s first invented comfort foods. It’s a basic dish identical to pork and beans, except that frankfurters are used instead of pork. It’s been used as comfort food for years and is normally served in a casual atmosphere. National Bean’ N’ Frank Day is the perfect day, ideal to make a Beanie Weenie

National Mac and Cheese Day (nationaltoday.com) - July 14, 2022

(I’m not sure if Mac and Cheese day is more important than Bastille Day - the French revolution event of storming the Bastille Prison).

I’m not a big Mac and Cheese lover - but I have grown to “like” (tolerate) Mac and Cheese.  Are you a mac and cheese lover?

NATIONAL TAPIOCA PUDDING DAY - July 15, 2022 - National Today

I’m not sure why I like tapioca pudding - maybe because it is just a little different (and, I can be a little different at times!!).  My sister (who doesn’t like tapioca pudding and doesn’t like oatmeal) would say that it is gross.

I like to make tapioca pudding - (probably from a box from the store - although I have made it from scratch) - and throw in some butterscotch baking chips to make butterscotch tapioca pudding.

NATIONAL CHERRY DAY - July 16, 2022 - National Today

Okay, it is the cherry season (at least at the grocery store).  Even if you have to spit out the pits and take off the stem, fresh cherries are awesome (in my opinion, of course).  It has been on my list for a while - but my sister made Michigan Cherry flavored coffee.  I have yet to see it in the Georgetown/Austin area - so I might have to order some Cherry Coffee!!!

WRAP UP

It is summer.  Enjoy your days, remember the summers of your youth, take the day off and visit a park, a museum, or go to a movie.  Life IS a spectator sport - get active and let LOVE WIN!!!
