When people see a cat's litter box they always say, "Oh, have you got a cat?" I just say, "No, it's for company!"

 

Employment application blanks always ask who should be called in case of an emergency. I think you should write, "An ambulance."

Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable.

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.

INTERNATIONAL SELF CARE DAY - July 24, 2022 - National Today

Taking care of ourselves is important.  The adage “Love your neighbor as yourself” implies that you take care of yourself!!!

My bias says that sharing laughter with friends is good!!!  You laugh (“laughter is the best medicine”), you think, you socialize, and you enjoy life!!!  

CAROUSEL DAY - July 25, 2022 - National Today

Carousels (or Merry-Go-Rounds) are frequently the first rides for children (and grandchildren!!).  I remember riding the Merry-Go-Round with my grandchildren!!!  (Yes, grandchildren are special.  I ascribe to the concept, “If I knew that grandchildren would be so much fun, I would have had them first!!!”.

BARBIE-IN-A-BLENDER DAY - July 27, 2022 - National Today

Okay - probably one of the weirdest days to be honored - a Barbie Doll in a blender?  Strange.

Tom Forsythe, a photographer, once published Barbie doll images near and inside a blender. His mission was to criticize consumer culture and the objectification of women through the photos. But the Mattel company filed a case against him for publishing the images, claiming copyright infringement. In 2004, Forsythe won the case and received $1.8 million in compensation. Barbie-in-a-Blender Day was then created to celebrate his efforts and to promote the importance of free artistic expression.

(And, if you will, Barbie dolls are both positive and negative.  Barbie has been “an astronaut, president, engineer, zoologist, etc. But, Barbie also demonstrates the negatives of a trim, almost impossible body)

NATIONAL SOCCER DAY - July 28, 2022 - National Today

Soccer is still a “new” phenomenon to me.  I grew up with baseball/softball, basketball, and football/volleyball.  I’ve commented “I went to a soccer game, the score was 0 to 0 and I needed the restroom.  When I returned the score was 1 to 0 and that’s how the game ended.”

In baseball, you know when the bases are loaded, and the best hitter is at bat that something will probably happen.  In football when the home team is in the “red zone”, you also anticipate a score.  In basketball, in the last minute with the score tied, you are glued to the television set. 

BUT, soccer for kids is a great activity.  You run, you “pass” the ball, you have rules - and kids get great exercise.

NATIONAL TALK IN AN ELEVATOR DAY - July 29, 2022 - National Today

I’m probably NOT going to be in an elevator today, but if I was in an elevator and somebody else was with me, I’d try to strike up a conversation.  

(At academic conferences where we’d be in large conference hotels, I’ve been known to push all the buttons for all the floors.  So if I got off on the 5th floor, the elevator would stop on the 6th through the highest floors!!) 

NATIONAL CHEESECAKE DAY - July 30, 2022 - National Today

I’ve learned to love cheesecake - and have made cherry cheesecake a couple of times.  (Not on my diet plan normally!!!)
