THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2022 - FINISH SUMMER WITH A FLOURISH
MAKE SOME MEMORIES
I noticed in May that my days were just blending together. Nothing was standing out. Day-after-day - with some variation.
So - let’s make some memories!!
Picture 2044 - twenty years from now. You and your family or friends are sitting around a campfire and saying “Hey do you remember the time that we …”.
So, let’s put some things in there.
Things you might normally NOT do,
*****
STOCK CAR RACE
Have you ever been to a stock car race? I’m not a big stock car racing fan, but I remember going to a stock car race with my son. The featured race was between four local politicians but that was just one of the races. We had cotton candy, and hot dogs and watched races. Between us, we chose a winner at the start of the race and cheered for them.
You might take some tagboard and create signs - “Go #35”, “Steve is Hot”, “Car #54 where are you?”, “Is Dale Earnhardt here?”. You can wear something special - Hawaiian shirts, tank tops, everybody can wear the same color t-shirt. Go to be a bit rowdy!!
*****
AMATEUR BASEBALL
I remember going to amateur baseball - a couple of my former students had played baseball in college and kept playing for their hometown teams. They played good baseball, you could tell they loved playing and loved winning, hated losing, and had a good time.
*****
SUPPORT THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL BAND OR FOOTBALL TEAM
With school coming soon, you can get up early and go and watch the local high school band rehearse their halftime football show and march. Take some water and treats for yourself and for the band.
Likewise, show up and cheer for the local high school football or soccer teams as they practice.
Like all the mentioned items - you can yell, cheer, and be a little obnoxious!!
*****
HAVE A LEMONADE STAND
Set up a lemonade stand - and give lemonade away. (Or free ice water, free iced tea). You can also charge for it which might teach your children a little about commerce.
*****
GO KAYAKING OR TUBING
See if you can borrow a kayak (or canoe) and go out and kayak. Pack a picnic lunch and snack on the banks of a stream or lake. Splash each other.
*****
HAVE A WATER BALLOON FIGHT
I don’t like the word “fight”, but do something with water balloons - toss them, break them, etc.
*****
GO TO A FARM
Do you know a farmer who has livestock? If not, ask a friend (who might have to ask a friend). You can also call the county extension agent who might know a farmer who would let you visit. (And, if it is a dairy farm, see if you can milk a cow!!)
If it is a grain farm (corn or soybeans or whatever), see if you can ride in the cab while they cultivate or spray for weeds.
*****
GO TO A COUNTY FAIR
In the farm theme, go to a county fair, stroll through the animal barns, look at the 4H show, and congratulate the kids. And, be sure to talk to the kids and adults who are showing their animals or quilts or other items!!!
*****
HAVE A DOG WASH
Put on your swimming suit, grab a bucket of soapy water and a hose, and run a dog wash in your neighborhood.
*****
GO TO A CARNIVAL
Has it been years since you went on a carnival ride? Find a carnival and ride one (or more) of the rides. Talk to a “carny” worker and see how their life is. Buy some “junk” food and enjoy the day.
*****
GO TO A WATER PARK
This might get expensive - but it is memorable. I remember going to Schlitterbahn with my daughter for the day!!!
*****
VISIT A SENIOR CENTER
Make some cards to give to seniors. Blow up balloons!!!
*****
PET SIT FOR A DAY
Find a neighbor with pets, and volunteer to watch their dog, cat, fish, whatever for a day. (FREE)
**********
Then in 2044 as you sit around the campfire, you can say “Do you remember the time that we …”
SHOW LOVE, SHOW GRACE AND MERCY, AND LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST
LOVE WINS!!
