WOW!

THIS IS OUR FIRST SUNDAY FUNDAY FOR SEPTEMBER 2023. FOR FOLKS IN MUCH OF THE UNITED STATES, THIS MIGHT MEAN RELIEF FROM HOT SUMMER TEMPERATURES.

AND TOMORROW IS LABOR DAY.

IN THE SKY

Did you miss the full moon last week? It was a SUPER MOON and a BLUE MOON!! 

It will be a supermoon and a blue moon and may appear larger than usual in the night sky. 

The moon orbits the Earth - but that orbit isn’t round but a little elliptical. So, the moon is sometimes closer to the Earth and sometimes farther away. When it is closer, it is a “supermoon”. (And, if you are wondering, when it is farther, it is called a “micromoon”). 

And - looking ahead, we will be able to see the new moon next April 8 when we have a lunar eclipse. The path will be over Texas. Austin (and Georgetown) will be on the fringe of the lunar eclipse. Waco and Dallas will be more in the center of the eclipse.

And we are about three weeks from the fall equinox (this year on September 23). That is the official day for Fall / Autumn.  

AND … WE HAD A LITTLE RAIN!!! (Not enough, but it did rain!!!)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

There is a significant realignment of college football conferences and teams. It is based on money. Some athletic conferences have important television contracts and share wealth among the teams.

After this season, Texas and Oklahoma will leave the Big 12 and join the Southeast Conference (SEC). This will also mean that eventually, Texas will play instate rival - Texas A&M again.

“The SEC is expected to distribute $70 million in revenue to each school in the coming years. 

 In 2022 the SEC paid $49.9 million to each of its 14 schools. 

 2020-21, the SEC distributed $54.6 million to each school. 

Texas and Oklahoma will pay the Big 12 $100 million to leave the conference early. 

 They will receive a full share of SEC revenue in 2025-26 when the projected revenue per school is at least $60 million. 

So, Texas will pay $100 million to leave the Big 12. They will get about $60 million a year from the SEC - so the payoff will come in two years.

The Big Ten Conference announced that the University of Oregon and the University of Washington will join the conference in August 2024. 

 The two schools will leave the Pac-12 Conference after the 2023 season. 

The Big Ten will expand to 18 teams with the additions of UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington. (UCLA and USC are joining in 2023).

(Karen thinks it is all about the money, not traditional conferences. The Big 10 was ten midwestern universities; the BIG 12 (formerly the Big 8) was universities in the Great Plains; the PAC 12 was colleges on the West Coast. When conferences were started, teams got on busses - but now travel by airplane.)

Emily is trying to find matches for three friends for the Senior Prom (for people over 60 years old!!!)

There are three friends: Nanyananda, Reece, and Gwen.
They have three desired qualities: Generous, Manly, and Funny.
They have three appearances: tattooed, blue-eyes, and tanned

Nanyananda never liked tattoos. But she does like manly and strong men

Reece thinks that jokes and humor are stupid. (She doesn’t understand most jokes.)

Gwen doesn’t like tattoos, and she doesn’t like tanned senior men. (She is more into pale vampires!!)

So, which type and qualities should Emma match up with Nanyananda, Briann, and Gwen?

CLASSICAL MUSIC MONTH -September 2023 - National Today

The Orchestra I play with is more of a “Pops Orchestra.”  Our next concerts are on October 7th and 8th. But they are “out-of-town” - Cedar Park and Pflugerville). It is called “Familiar Favorites” - with some Big Band Music, Dave Brubeck’s Take Five (light Jazz), Raiders of the Lost Ark, Seventh-Six Trombones, and more!!!

NATIONAL CHICKEN MONTH -September 2023 - National Today

I eat a lot of chicken and make chicken spaghetti, chili, and more.  

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP MONTH -September 2023 - National Today

I know some of you (like Vickie) who have dogs!! In my neighborhood (of apartments), some dog owners don’t pick up “waste.”

Granny Basketball is back. We are planning a scrimmage in Killeen in mid-September.

The Walburg band is getting ready. We will play on Saturday, October 7, 14, 21, and 28. (I will be playing with the Orchestra on October 7).

And tomorrow is Labor Day!!!
