SUNDAY FUNDAY - FEBRUARY 14, 2021
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!
Here we are - Sunday - AND - it is Valentine’s Day.
First - who is this Valentine Person? (and technically it is “St. Valentine’s Day - so was he a Saint?)
Legends of Saint Valentine!! (From https://www.history.com/topics/valentines-day/history-of-valentines-day-2)
“The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Still, others insist that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome.
“Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl—possibly his jailor’s daughter—who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and—most importantly—romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.”
Valentine Fun Facts:
250 Million Roses are produced for Valentine’s Day. They tend to be red roses as Greeks believed that red roses came from Aphrodite, the goddess of love.
Other than hot-houses, few of Valentine’s roses are grown in the United States (something about winter not being a friend to roses).
But, since many roses are imported, Customs and Border Patrol inspect the roses for pests and diseases.
In terms of flowers, Valentine’s Day is second to Mother’s Day!!
A study found that men viewed women wearing red or standing in front of a red background as significantly more attractive and sexually desirable than women wearing or standing in front of different colors.
Chocolates - especially in a heart-shaped box - are great valentine's gifts. In terms of chocolate sales, Halloween is first, then Easter, and in third place is Valentine’s Day.

BUT - a “new” view - Galentine’s Day
Galentine’s Day is on Valentine’s Day Eve (or February 13th). Seemingly it was created in the TV sitcom - “Parks and Rec”.
“This day is all about celebrating the unique bond women share with their best gal pals—the ladies who remember to text you when you start a new job, who bring you chocolate when you’re PMSing, who always remember your birthday, and who support you through all the ups and downs that life brings, no matter how tough things get. “
“The “traditional” way to celebrate is with a lavish brunch. Here’s how Leslie explained it in the 2010 episode of Parks and Rec: “Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.”
(Aside, I am learning so much about girl friends - or gal pals. The bonds seem to be entirely different than male friendships!!!)

Valentine’s Logic Puzzle
Four friends are planning a Valentine’s Day Party. They want all the decorations and food to be red. They are Amber, Beth, Clara, and Darcy. The fruits are cherries, strawberries, watermelon, and red apples. The flowers are red poppies, red roses, red daisies, and red tulips. The decorations are streamers, balloons, candies, and a red table cloth.
1, The girl who brought the bowl of cherries loves the flower that starts with the same letter of her name
2. The girl who loves red roses is NOT Amber
3. Beth did NOT bring strawberries or red apples
4. Clara loves red poppies
5. The girl who loves candies, did NOT bring red apples
6. The girl who brought streamers was NOT Clara
7. Amber brought red balloons
8. Of the person who brought watermelon and the person who brought strawberries, one brought streamers and one brought tulips
9. Either the girl who brought red daisies or the girl who brought red tulips also brought the red candies
So, which girl brought which fruit, flower, and decoration?
