SUNDAY FUNDAY - FEBRUARY 7, 2021

SUNDAY FUNDAY

Sunday, February 7, 2021

HAPPY SUNDAY FUNDAY

Happy First Thursday in February of 2021!!!   And, COVID-19 continues.

There is some hope.  I have an appointment for the Modera vaccine on March 22nd!!  (Yeehaw!!).  As for how the appointments work - it is still a mystery.  My appointment came from the daughter of a friend - who searched various sites to get a vaccination for her mom, herself, and me.

Six months ago, I didn’t want the vaccine.  My thoughts (then), were that the pharmaceutical companies had rushed their products to market.  There was some testing, but was this vaccine going to have side-effects later?  If down-the-road some negative side effects occur can people sue the pharmaceutical company because of the side-effects?

Asbestos was hailed as a miracle fire protection device.  I remember theaters advertising “asbestos curtains” that would curtail any fires.  Little did they know that the side effects would cause cancer.  I think (hope) that the pharmaceutical companies have done their ‘due diligence’ in this case.  The pandemic needs to stop as it really has torn at the fabric of our lives.  Social isolation has affected all of us (generalization - but I suspect it is true).

IDIOMS

Do you know these expressions?

Under the weather

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

A penny saved is a penny earned

A penny for your thoughts?

That’s going to cost me an arm and a leg!

Break the ice

Bite off more than I can chew

Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched

LOGIC

A census taker approaches a woman leaning on her gate and asks about her children. She says, "I have three children and the product of their ages is seventy–two. The sum of their ages is the number on this gate." The census taker does some calculations and claims not to have enough information. The woman enters her house, but before slamming the door tells the census taker, "I have to see my eldest child who is in bed with measles." The census taker departs, satisfied.  (See hint at the bottom)

HUMOR

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He’s not breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911.

“I think my friend is dead!” he yells. “What can I do?”

The operator says, “Calm down. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.”

There’s a silence, then a shot. Back on the phone, the guy says, “OK, now what?”

***

I was out hunting some time ago, I got lost and it was getting late!!  I remember somebody saying “if you are lost, fire three shots in the air, and somebody will come and find you.”

I hoped somebody could come and rescue me - before I rang out of arrows!!!

***

There were two tomato plants growing by the side of a country road.  They were the best of friends.  They would talk all day.  But, the soil had some rocks in it and they were under trees and didn’t get all the rain and sunshine.  One day, one plant (the “Early Girl” tomato plant), said to her friend “I think the dirt is much better on the other side of the road.”  That was the topic of discussion for two days, and then (somehow), that Early Girl plant picked up her roots and went to the other side of the road.

And, yes, the dirt was much better, the rain-soaked in around her roots, the sunshine was plentiful, and the Early Girl tomato plant grew bigger and stronger every day.  She would yell back across the road “Come on over, it is so much better here.” The second tomato plant (a Big Boy tomato) thought about it a couple of days as they yelled back and forth.  He did miss his friend.  So, finally one day, he too, picked up his roots and started across the road.

Alas  <SMACK> a car drove by and ran over the Big Boy plant.  His friend quickly called 911 and an ambulance came and took the Big Boy tomato plant to the emergency room.  The Early Girl plant was allowed to ride with the ambulance.  She was in the waiting room and paced while her friend was in emergency surgery.

Finally, the doctor (Dr. Eggplant) came out with the results.

The doctor said, “I have good news and bad news”.

The Early Girl said “Give me the good news”

Dr. Eggplant said, “Your friend will live”.

The Early Girl plant jumped for joy and then asked “And, what is the bad news?”

Dr. Eggplant said, “I’m sorry, but he is going to be a vegetable for the rest of his life”.

(ta-dum!!!)

SUPER BOWL

Okay, the Super Bowl is being played in Tampa between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs.  With the home venue and Tom Brady at quarterback, I’m predicting a 35 to 28 win for Tampa Bay!!!

And, a trivia question.  What NFL teams are not named after a city?  (Technically “Tampa” in the town, and “Tampa Bay” is the area).

But, it is still a great day to snack.

Wikipedia says: “Large amounts of food and alcohol are consumed on Super Sunday. The event is the second-largest food consumption event in the United States, behind only Thanksgiving dinner, and some police departments have noticed a dramatic increase in drunk driving on Super Sunday

Super Sunday food is usually served buffet style, rather than as a sit-down meal. Foods traditionally eaten on Super Sunday include buffalo wings, chili, baby back ribs, dipping sauces, pizza, and potato chips. Many pizza delivery businesses see their order numbers double as roughly 60 percent of the take out orders on Super Sunday is pizza. Roughly 28 million pounds of chips, 1.25 billion chicken wings, and 8 million pounds of guacamole are consumed during Super Sunday.

Do you have a favorite Super Bowl food?  Do you watch the game, watch the commercials or just change the channel!!!

SIGNIFICANT HISTORY DATES

February 4, 1974 - Patty Hearst Kidnapped!!!

(And, maybe became one with her capturers)

February 5, 1631 - Roger Williams arrived at the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  He later founded Rhode Island with an open religious policy (including Jews, and Quakers)

February 6, 1952 - Queen Elizabeth takes the throne! (And, she still rules!!)

February 7, 1964 - The Beatles arrive in New York - Beatlemania starts!!  (I am a Beatle fan - there are sweet ballots (Yesterday), hard-rocking hits (Lady Madonna), love songs (I want to hold your hand), and some off-beat things (I am the Walrus)

February 8, 1943 - Americans Secure Guadalcanal

Before the pandemic, I went to the Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg.  The painstaking island-by-island war in the Pacific was difficult.  “War is hell” indeed!!

February 9, 1964 - Ed Sullivan hosts the Beatles on his show!!  Bedlam erupted!!!  My sister is three years older and really got into the  Beatles before I did.

February 10, 1962 - Francis Gary Powers is swapped for a Russian spy.  Powers was a pilot of a U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance plane that was shot down over Russia.  (Today, we do all that with satellites!!!)

NATIONAL DAYS

February 4 - National Homemade soup day

I’ve been making all kinds of soup and dishes.  I really liked my chicken wild rice soup a month ago and I will make it again.  Chicken and rice, chicken and beans.  (Yes, I do like chicken in the crockpot!!!)

February 5 - National Shower with a friend day

Okay - any volunteers?  (Just kidding!!!)

The link suggests: “Winter is the coldest and loneliest season of the year. With dwindling daylight and Valentine’s Day at its heart, February can often leave people feeling dejected and somber. The day injects a bit of humor into the season while also serving to educate people on the benefits of showering in fresh, filtered water (and the effects of chlorine).

February 6 - National Chopstick Day

I do like Asian (Chinese) foods - and, at times, I was reasonable using chopsticks.  I could pick up sticky rice - and could stab meat, broccoli, and vegetables. Are you good with chopsticks?

February 7 - National Send a Card to a friend

We all probably have old friends that we should send a note to.  Yes, we can send email messages (or text messages), but to sit down and actually write a card and putting a stamp on it can have benefits -both for the receiver and the sender!!!  (Actually, I’m working on this as I am sending Valentine’s Cards to family and friends!!)

February 7 - SUPER BOWL

Do you have a preference?  Will you be watching?

February 8 - National Football Hangover Day

Yes - the day after the big game - you might have a hangover!!

And

February 8 - National Fly a Kite Day

Over the years, I have enjoyed flying kites.  I did make some box kites and traditional kites.

Have you made kites?

February 9 - National “Cut the Cord” Day

You might know that I don’t have a television in my apartment.  That is a personal preference.  I know that some of you have cut out your cable television and moved to some other service.  (Someday down the line, I may want to talk with you about this!!)

February 10 - National Umbrella Day

Grab your “Bumbershoot” and celebrate this day.  (Bumbershoot is a colloquial term for an umbrella, probably coined in the 19th century as a portmanteau of the words umbrella and parachute.)

REFLECTIONS

So, we move on - the weather is (generally) good. (No big snowstorm like the rest of the country got).

I have two small green tomatoes on my tomato plant from last fall.  I wasn’t going to keep it, but then thought - why not, it is a green plant

LOVE WINS!!!

HUGS!!!

Logic hint

72 is the combination of 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 3.  You could have three children 9, 8, and 1 (that would have a product of 72 and a total of 18.  (but that is the ONLY way to get 18)

The ages of all three add up to <something>.  BUT, there would be TWO ways to add up to that <something> - because the census taker wasn’t sure until the lady says “her oldest” which indicates there is JUST one child at that age.  (There are twins though).

The census taker can see the house number - which has TWO possibilities - and only one has the oldest person!!!

Hint #2.  The house number is under 21!!
