SUNDAY, FUNDAY - SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2020

 SUNDAY, FUNDAY - SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2020

WOW - here we are in November:

November’s name has remained unchanged since the ancient Roman calendar, which was in use until 45 BC. This first Roman calendar was only made up of ten months, with November being the ninth month. November actually translates rather appropriately into “ninth month” in Latin. When the Julian calendar was adopted in 45 BC two new months were added, which pushed November back to the 11th Despite its change in position, November was never renamed.

Many people in the US can recall what they were doing at 12:30 pm on the 22nd of November, 1963. It was on this day that President John F. Kennedy, known as JFK, was fatally shot while riding along with his wife in a procession of cars. He was rushed to a hospital all too late and was pronounced dead at 1 pm that day. Kennedy was the fourth US president to be assassinated, after Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, and William McKinley.

[I was in eleventh grade, and we got the news while at school.  It was a Friday (I didn’t remember, so had to look it up).  I really can’t remember much more.  I don’t think school dismissed early - but I do remember the videos from television when I got home.  Hatred won that day, but we can’t let that hatred flourish …]

A rather hairy spectacle occurs in various parts of the world including Australia, the US, and England every year in November. It’s called Movember, and the idea is to raise money for charity by growing a mustache. Participants must shave on the first morning of November and grow their mustache throughout the month, with the ensuing amusement as an incentive for others to donate to a good cause.

[Do you know of people who have done Movember?]

National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo is a month-long creative writing challenge that takes place every November. During the month participants from all over the world are challenged to write a 50,000 word first draft of a novel.

Actually, I have participated in NaNoWriMo in the past.  I wrote my first novel “Redemption” in November. (which the NaNoWriMo site didn’t count as they said it didn’t have 50,000 words).

NOVEMBER MEMORIES

Valentine's day is on the 14th of February. Children's day in India is on 14th November.  There's a gap of 9 months. I don't think I need to explain any more.

(My birthday is in late August - when I understood the human gestation period, I wondered (and never asked), if my parents, getting up from Thanksgiving dinner decided it was time for sex!!)

A fall memory.  I grew up idolizing my grandpa.  I was his little buddy.  In fall, he raked all his leaves (Cedar Rapids Iowa) to the edge of the street and burned them.  It was a sweet but also a caustic smell that I remember.  That was before leaf burning was banned.

In Iowa, fall brought colder weather - and occasionally snow.  Generally, it wasn’t enough snow to sled on - but enough to brighten my day (although I don’t remember any school‘s snow days’ in November).

In South Dakota, I remember a fall Saturday that changed into freezing rain.  We were driving to go Christmas shopping and saw several cars in the ditch and turned back.  We got off the paved roads and drove on gravel roads as I reasoned there would be better traction because of the gravel.

NOVEMBER FUN AND GAMES

I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down!

I ordered a chicken and an egg from Amazon. I’ll let you know (which comes first)

The fattest knight at King Arthur’s round table was Sir Cumference. He acquired his size from too much pi.

Don't trust atoms. They make up everything!

Clerk:: "Would you like the milk in a bag?"

Customer: "No, just leave it in the carton!’”

I used to have a job at a calendar factory but I got the sack because I took a couple of days off.

You know what the loudest pet you can get is? A trumpet.

The secret service isn't allowed to yell "Get down!" anymore when the president is about to be attacked. Now they have to yell "Donald, duck!"

LOGIC PROBLEMS:

You have a three-gallon and a five-gallon measuring device. You wish to measure out four gallons.

There are two beautiful yet remote islands in the south pacific. The Islanders born on one island always tell the truth, and the Islanders from the other island always lie.

You are on one of the islands and meet three Islanders. You ask the first which island they are from in the most appropriate Polynesian tongue, and he indicates that the other two Islanders are from the same Island. You ask the second Islander the same question, and he also indicates that the other two Islanders are from the same island.

Can you guess what the third Islander will answer to the same question?

(This is tricky - think it through)

NATIONAL DAYS:

November 8th, National STEM / STEAM day

STEM is: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills

STEAM is science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics skills

The link says “There’s no way around it: children are significantly better off with strong science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics skills.

November 9th Go to an Art Museum Day

I enjoy art - even though I am not an ‘art’ artist (music/tuba playing can be considered an ‘art form’)

I like art - and I use an iPhone App - Daily Art - where art is different every day - with explanations.

November 10th - Sesame Street Day

“Did you know that Sesame Street is the most widely viewed kids’ show in the world? Though initially meant to simply be fun and educational, the show has evolved into an international cultural phenomenon

I can still remember some Sesame Street skits and songs “Rubber Duckie, Your the one” … This is definitely part of our culture!!

November 11th - Veterans Day

“Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11, is a tribute to military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces”

If I remember correctly, it is on the 11th day of November at the 11th hour, that the cease-fire occurred - ending World War II.  Like all countries, we have had wars, military, soldiers, and sailors, marines, air force personnel.   Let us say “thanks” to those who served today!!

November 13th - World Kindness day

If you can be anything, be nice (or be kind)

“The purpose of World Kindness Day as outlined by the World Kindness Movement is “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.” Since its creation more than two decades ago, the day has achieved truly global notice; events associated with the day have attracted participants from every inhabited continent. These have included activities such as concerts, dance mobs, and the distribution of “kindness cards.”

November 14th - World Diabetes Day

“type II diabetes has an estimated 425 million individuals affected worldwide. This alarming rise in such a preventable disease is one of the reasons the WHO and IDF wanted to create World Diabetes Day – to help spread awareness of how to prevent contracting the illness.

“Having to manage blood sugar levels on a daily basis is a time-consuming and costly endeavor, as the economic cost of diabetes globally is around $727 billion (USD) and in the US alone it costs almost a third of that, at $245 billion.

LOGIC PROBLEM ANSWERS:

To get four gallons:

-. Fill the five-gallon bucket

- pour that amount into the three-gallon bucket (the five-gallon bucket will have two gallons and the three-gallon bucket will be full

- Empty the three-gallon bucket and pour the two gallons from the five-gallon bucket into the small bucket (the five-gallon bucket will be empty, and the three-gallon bucket will have two gallons

-. Fill the five-gallon bucket again

- Pour enough water into the smaller bucket so it is full (since it already has two gallons, you can only pour one gallon into the smaller bucket)

-. That will leave exactly four gallons in the larger bucket!!

Islands with the truth.

Yes, the third Islander will say the other two Islanders are from the same island.

Conclusion!!

Happy Sunday, Funday!!!

I hope your upcoming week is full of fun, you, happiness and forgiveness!!!

LOVE WINS!!!

HUGS!!!

Karen
