Now, why did I start with that?
Not to brag - but as an introduction to one word - “ALL”
ALL - that means 100% - ALL. (If you noticed above, while I might be close, I'm never at 100%!!!!)
As an educator, there were times I needed to say “ALL” is not appropriate because NOT all is true.
*****
But, today, I want to say “ALL” - “ALL”
It seems as if we have a new President-Elect. He is NOT just the President of the Democrats in the United States, he is NOT just the President of the Republicans in the United States; he is NOT just the President of Blacks, Whites, Christians, Jewish, Muslims, Native American “Indians” or Indians with a heritage of the Indian subcontinent. He is the President of those in jails; and those not in jails; of those who follow the law; and those who break the law. (Not that I am encouraging law-breaking!!!)
He is the President of ALL the people of the United States. In fact, he is the President of All the people living in the United States. He is directly the President of peoples around the world. He has to relight the lamp in the Statue of Liberty.
The dedication in the Statue of Liberty says “ “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
*****
(Please excuse me here). I view the United States as a tarnished, beaten, political entity - but that recent political fight has to lead to reconciliation. Let’s take President Donald Trump’s slogan “Make American Great Again” to really be “Make American Great Again, a leader in the World, a friend to allies, a friend to the down-trodden, a friend even to China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, AND the whole world.
Let’s reopen our doors (when it is safe to do so), let international students come to our campuses for education - but also to interact with American students. Let international visitors visit our country. Let us visit other countries.
John Donne said, "No man is an island", while it isn't true in the physical world, but "No country is an island" (excuse me Great Britain) - we need to get along better!!!
“The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling[a] together; and a little child will lead them.
"The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
"The infant will play near the cobra’s den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.
"They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. (Isaiah 11:7-9)
Isn’t it time to let LOVE WIN? (for ALL people - no exceptions?)
*****
Maybe I’m back in my college years hearing the chants “All we are saying, is give peace a chance”.
*****
I do also know that in the past, the political party has been called “the loyal opposition”. Yes, dissent is good to keep from being too ‘one-sided’ (as in Belarus or North Korea). The new administration will make mistakes; all prior administrations made mistakes.
BUT the grammatical word of the day is still “ALL”. The President-Elect is president of ALL Americans.
Let me close with two Biblical verses: (I’ve used these before)
1 Timothy 2:1-2
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness
Micah 6:8 (paraphrased)
And what does God expect of you? To love Justice; to show Mercy; and to walk humbly with your God!!
LOVE WINS
HUGS!!
