Super Bowl 2020
Super Bowl Food
Super Bowl Sunday might not be an official holiday, but that doesn’t stop it from claiming the title of second-biggest “food holiday” in the United States — only Thanksgiving tops it!
And, while Thanksgiving is an ‘at-home’ meal, Super Bowl is one of the biggest days for ordering take-out food - and of that about 60% of the orders are for pizza!! Pizza is #1 main food and chicken (especially chicken wings are #2). Americans are expected to eat about 1.25 BILLION chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday!!
You will want to consider nachos, chips - and of course, dips!!! Yeehaw!! Grilling hot dogs and other items in the backyard are also popular!!
And … did you know antacid sales go up by 20 percent the day after the big game? Maybe all that heartburn explains why more than 1.5 million people will call in sick to work the day after the game.

Okay, let’s talk about the commercials for Super Bowl 54 (LIV in Roman Numerals)
According to the Sporting News (link above);
“The cost of a 30-second commercial spot for Super Bowl 54 was about $5.6 million, according to AdAge.
“The cost of a 30-second commercial spot for Super Bowl 54 was about $5.6 million, according to AdAge.
“Fox reportedly sold out of its ad slots in November, which is good, since the network pays the NFL roughly $1.1 billion for its rights package, including Sunday games, a share of "Thursday Night Football" and its place in the Super Bowl broadcast rotation.”
And, by comparison, “The cost of a commercial at the first Super Bowl was $37,500”
While I didn’t find a definitive answer, it seems like the average Super Bowl has about 42 - 30 second commercials - at 5.6 million per spot, that is over 230 million in advertising revenue. (Plus, if you will, the advertisers wants the most ‘bank for their buck’ so they hire top-notch advertising agencies to do the ads and may involve highly recognized people.
It also seems like about 60,000 spectators will be at the Hot Rock Cafe stadium in Miami Gardens - paying about $2000 (average) per seat - for a total of 120 million!!
There will be approximately $120,000 extra per player per team - so that is a big payout. (that seems to be a negotiated amount between the NFL and the Players Union. (That is, of course, before taxes!!)
The Super Bowl is generally the most watched one single event on television. That can vary. With a smaller Midwest market team (Kansas City) against a West Coast team (49ers), the large east coast audience doesn’t have as much interest as maybe the New York Giant or Philadelphia Eagles might have. But, hey, it is the Super Bowl, so even if you don’t have a favorite team playing, you will probably watch.
So, are you going to watch today? Are you staying home or going away? How much food do you anticipate eating? Which team are you favoring today?
Hugs!!

(Being a native midwesterner, I will lightly cheer for the Kansas City Chiefs. I will be attending a Super Bowl party at a friend’s house who was originally from the Kansas City area. My favorite professional teams as the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings - and both made the playoffs - but didn’t get to the Super Bowl game. Now living in Texas, I’m ‘kind-of’ a Dallas Cowboy fan (and not a fan of the Houston Texans). I hope it is a great close game and not a blow-out in the second quarter!!)
