Mother's Day 2020

Mother’s Day 2020

This will be a different Mother’s Day.  No family gatherings (or very small ones) as we continue to practice social distancing.  There may be flowers - but probably more will be sent than just dropped off.

In thinking about a post for Mother’s Day, I went WAY-BACK.  Some of my older readers (LMG, AP, TF, RP, KB#1) might vaguely remember this song.  And it does pre-date me by thirty-plus years too.  I think I can remember this on the Lawrence Welk Show (and again, about the same people might remember the North Dakota Bandleader.)

First - here is a link to the singing

Now, the words to the chorus:
"M" is for the million things she gave me
"O" means only that she's growing old
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me
"H" is for her heart of purest gold
"E" is for her eyes with love-light shining
"R" means right and right she'll always be
Put them all together they spell MOTHER,
a word that means the world to me.

My parents sang.  As kids, when we took road trips (not too frequently), my parents would sing - to us and to each other.  (Maybe in the days of radio, singing was more common).

*****
They sang - Let me call your sweetheart:
Let me call you sweetheart
I'm in love with you
Let me hear you whisper
That you love me too

Keep the love-light glowing
In your eyes so true
Let me call you sweetheart
I'm in love with you
*****
Both my parents had good voices.  My father was a baritone and my mother a soprano - and she would add harmony to songs.

There were love songs, fun songs, even religious songs.  My father loved to do parodies on songs - like the "I'd like to teach the World to Sing, in perfect harmony, a song of love, and peace and joy, that comes from knowing me"

*****
And, you are my sunshine:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

*****
Growing up in the 1950s with two loving parents was definitely a gift from God!!

Do you have memories of your mother or your parents?

Hugs - and Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Karen
