SUNDAY FUNDAY, SUNDAY OCTOBRT 10, 2021

 SUNDAY FUNDAY
OCTOBER 10, 2021

WARM-UP

It’s October!!!  Open your windows, take a walk outside, enjoy the Fall weather!!!

In Central Texas, we can finally get outside.  Daytime temperatures in the upper 80s or low 90s - so it can still be warm (hot?) but night temperatures in the upper 60s or lower 70s.  I can open my windows and enjoy the breeze.

I’m getting too busy.  TWO symphony orchestras, playing tuba for the local German restaurant Oktoberfest, granny basketball, bridge - and - I took on a part-time job at a local senior independent living facility - three or four nights a week (4 to 8 pm).

And, some trivia I just learned: “Austin saw 103 days with elevated levels of air pollution in 2020.

LOGIC PROBLEM OF THE WEEK:

Four of our friends have unusual pets.  Actually, the type of pet DOES NOT correspond to the friend’s first name.

My friends are Nancy, Emily, David, and Orville.  The pets are: Narwhale, Emu, Dragon, and Octopus

1. No child has a pet that starts with the same letter as his or her name.

2. Emily doesn’t have a pet that lives in water.

3. David doesn’t have an octopus

4. Orville’s pet loves to swim.

Who has what pet? Answers at bottom.

BAD PUNS:

I used to play in a band called “The Hinges”.  We opened for “The Doors”

The toilet was stolen from the police department.  They have nothing to go on.

Do not accept friend requests from Hormel Foods.  It could be SPAM!!

The world’s champion tongue twister was just arrested.  I hear it is going to be a really tough sentence!!!

Bruce Wayne asked his servant: “Alfred, can you fill-up the bathtub?”

Alfred replied, “Excuse me sir, but what is a “htub”?

(Think on it … Batman!!)

Two silk worms had a race.  It ended up in a tie!!

Don’t join dangerous cults.  Practice safe sects!!

TODAY IN HISTORY

October 7, 2001 - (Yes, this was last week)

On October 7, 2001, a U.S.-led coalition begins attacks on Taliban-controlled Afghanistan with an intense bombing campaign by American and British forces. Logistical support was provided by other nations including France, Germany, Australia, and Canada, and, later, troops were provided by the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance rebels. The invasion of Afghanistan was the opening salvo in the United States “war on terror” and response to September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. The conflict in Afghanistan would span two decades and become the longest war in U.S. history.

(It sure was easy to start, and it seemed hard to end)

*****

October 10, 1973 - Vice President Spiro Agnew resigns (and later when President Nixon resigns leads to the only non-elected (as President or Vice President) President - do you know his name?

*****

October 11, 1971, sees the release of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” one of the most influential songs of the 20 century.

And, today, October 11,  is THANKSGIVING (in Canada!!!)

*****

October 12, 1492 - “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue”.  First landing in the “New World”.

Some have condemned “Columbus Day” as racial and we have Indigenous People’s Day.  When I taught in South Dakota, a state this was “Native American Day” recognizing the many Native Americans in the State (and, of course, how the United States took back the Black Hills when gold was discovered).

*****

October 13, 1792 - White House cornerstone laid!!!
(I’ve lived most of my life in “The White House” - but alas, now I live in the “White Apartment”!!!)

*****

NATIONAL M&M DAY - October 13, 2021 | National Today

It’s National M&M Day, so get ready to celebrate. Created in 1941, this iconic candy has been a staple for over 75 years. After all, they melt in your mouth, not in your hand.

My favorite is Peanut Butter M&M’s (then maybe the crispy M&Ms).  I’m not very fond of the sauerkraut M&Ms (I don’t think they ever made them!!)

*****

(Oldies) October 14, 1957 - The Everly Brothers hit #1 with “Wake up Little Suzie”

Also, The Battle of Hastings (1066) - last time fighting on English soil

Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier!!  (It’s been years since I heard a “sonic boom”!!)

*****

October 15, 1991, Clarence Thomas confirmed to SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States).

*****

National Boss's Day — When and How to Celebrate (nationaltoday.com) - October 16th.

Say some nice things about your boss.

WRAP UP!!!

Here we are - moving along in October.  Do you have your Halloween costume yet? (I do, I might give you a preview next week!!)

Enjoy October before November takes all the leaves off the trees and December, January, and February bring cold and snow)

LIFE IS GOOD!!

Have an awesome week.
