NATIONAL DAYS:

November 1st - All Saints Day -

Honoring Saints who don’t have a prescribed day - and all Saints!!

“All Saints' Day, also known as All Hallows' Day, Hallowmas, the Feast of All Saints, or Solemnity of All Saints, is a Christian solemnity celebrated in honor of all the saints, known and unknown. In Western Christianity, it is celebrated on November 1 by the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Methodist Church, the Philippine Independent Church (Iglesia Filipina Independiente), the Church of the Nazarene, the Lutheran Church, the Reformed Church, and other Protestant churches

November 1st - National Men Make Dinner Day

I know some men who do all the cooking - but generally it is the work of the women

November 1st - National Vinegar Day

It seems as if vinegar is an old purpose mixture that has a lot of uses

“One of the most common is using apple cider vinegar to improve gut health and acid reflux. “

Vinegar is common for kids learning about volcanos!!

“Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner, so get a jump on cleaning the house with a few tried and true vinegar cleaning mixes. Mix it with lemon for a powerful and natural bath and shower cleaner, or use it straight to brighten coffee cups. It can also be a lifesaver for getting tough stains out of your favorite fabrics.”

November 2nd - Day of the Dead

In other backgrounds, it might be called “All Souls Day”

My friend Nancy has a wonderful altar of remembrances for the Day of the Dead.

November 3rd - Election Day

The First Tuesday of the month of November.  We vote for President every four years, congressmen every two years, and senators every six years.  States and cities can pick their own dates.

November 3rd - National Sandwich day

What’s your favorite Sandwich?  BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato?),

Mine is good, old peanut butter, butter and jelly.  Unfortunately, I can go through a regular jar of peanut butter in about four days.  (I don’t think that is healthy).  Plus, I like real (salted butter) and apricot, strawberry or peach preserves for the jelly.  To save a few calories, I’ve been having it on a soft tortilla.

November 4th - National Candy day

Okay - time out.  Candy without chocolate is kind of “blah”!!  And, dark chocolate (although it has good antioxidants) isn’t my favorite either.  Milk chocolate.  But, not just milk chocolate, but with something with it - like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kats, or similar.

November 5th - National American Football day

I know the rest of the world think “football” (or fuitbol) is soccer - a sport where you really do use your feet more than your arms.

I like American Football because I grew up on it, it is much more exciting than soccer - you can score six points, three points or two points on certain plays.  When a team gets into the “Red Zone” I can perk up and watch.

Plus there are the extras - punts, runbacks, sacks, long passes, kick-off returns, trick plays.  It is so much more than soccer!!!

November 5th - National Hot Sauce Day

I am not a big hot sauce fan, but somehow lately as I’ve been doing my own cooking, I’ve been adding some chili powder or Cajun spices to some of my things.  Maybe I’ve been living in Texas too long where hot sauce is a standard!!!

November 5th - Love your Red Hair Day and National Red Head Day

I like red hair!!  I have a niece with red hair and friends.  It is a recessive trait, and I’ve read that in the future there will be no (or very few) red heads.  And, I think the world will be less without that flare.  (But, we can still color our hair.  What do you think?  Should I get a red dye in my hair someday?

November 7th - National Bison Day

You see them everywhere — on coins, on sports team logos, and a couple of state flags. No, we’re not talking about the bald eagle. This honor is reserved for North American bison. On National Bison Day, November 7, an annual event that falls on the first Saturday in November, all Americans should reflect on the impact bison have as a part of our environmental and cultural heritage. Bison are especially revered by Native people — central to their survival as both food and spiritual inspiration.

NOVEMBER

November is the eleventh month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars, the fourth and last of four months to have a length of 30 days, and the fifth and last of five months to have a length of fewer than 31 days. November was the ninth month of the calendar of Romulus c. 750 bc. November retained its name (from the Latin novem meaning "nine") when January and February were added to the Roman calendar.(The year once started in March - so October - the 8th month, November the 9th month, and December the 10th month - were named correctly - but then they added January and February.   November is a month of late autumn in the Northern Hemisphere - and can be wintery in some climates.

The BIG THING about November in my mind is THANKSGIVING!!!  (But, I’ll write about that more in a couple of weeks.)  The worst thing about November is (okay, my opinion) Black Friday - the shopping day after Thanksgiving!!!

RIDDLE ANSWERS
-1 What has 13 hearts, but no other organs?  A DECK OF CARDS

-2 What tastes better than it smells?  YOUR TONGUE

-3 What kind of coat is best put on wet?  A COAT OF PAINT

-4I am an odd number. Take away a letter and I become even. What number am I?  THE NUMBER SEVEN

-5I’m light as a feather, yet the strongest person can’t hold me for five minutes. What am I?  YOUR BREATHE

-6 If you’re running in a race and you pass the person in second place, what place are you in?  SECOND PLACE

LOVE WINS!!!

SATURDAY STORY - HALLOWEEN STORY - OCTOBER 31, 2020

 SATURDAY STORY - HALLOWEEN STORY - OCTOBER 31, 2020

(This is a work of fiction)

*****

Jay Schultz had just accepted a job with Federated Insurance of Owatonna Minnesota as director of Data Security.  Jay had graduated from Dakota State University in South Dakota and had worked in other locations in South Dakota and Southwest Minnesota for 15 years and this was a big step up - with more responsibility and more pay.

Meaghan Schultz graduated from Dakota State University with a master’s degree in Health Informatics and worked in health record administration at Sanford Medical Center and Hospital, and would be working at the Owatonna Hospital as the associate director of Health Information Systems.

Their two children, Marci and Trevor were 10 and 8 respectfully.

The family had found a house about three miles east of Owatonna.  It had been a farmhouse with about 360 acres of land, but over the years, the land had been sold to neighboring farmers.  The house did have a few older outbuildings and about five acres of land.  Both Jay and Meaghan had grown up on a farm and had been active in 4H.  They wanted their children to be on a farm, even though it was just five acres.  Jay and Meaghan had talked of someday having a few cows or a horse or two, but at this stage, it was a new start for them.

Trevor, unfortunately, had cerebral palsy.  He would be able to be outside in his wheelchair but wouldn’t be able to do much on the hobby farm.

The house was good, but it did need some work.  The kitchen was okay, but not very modern.  Jay and Meaghan had taken out a home improvement loan to do some remodeling. They would also need a ramp for Trevor to get in-and-out of the house.

As the family visited the farm for the first time, the first thing that Trevor saw was a garden plot that had pumpkins, but was overgrown with weed.  “Mom”, he exclaimed, “Look, a pumpkin patch”.

There were many chores involved in moving, but when things settled, just before school started, Jay, Marci, and Trevor looked over the pumpkin patch.  There were about 50 good sized pumpkins growing in the patch - from seeds spread from last year’s crop.  Jay ran the lawnmower through the patch to make some walkways and used the weed-whacker to clean up some of the other weeds.  Marci helped pull weeds and Trevor pointed out weeds he wanted Marci to pull.

After a day cleaning out the pumpkin patch, Jay asked Meaghan if they could put a sign on the fence by the patch saying “Trevor’s Pumpkin Patch”.  She thought that was an awesome idea, so the next weekend, they made a large sign that could be seen from the road saying “Trevor’s Pumpkin Patch”.

****

The family soon got involved in their new community.  Jay and Meaghan with their work, and the children with school.  At church, they had decided to stay after the service for coffee and donuts so they could meet some people.

Hugh and Mary Westfield were an older couple in the community, and they became almost adoptive grandparents for Marci and Trevor because of meeting them at the coffee and donuts after church.  (Jay and Meaghan’s parents were in South Dakota).

One Sunday morning, Hugh said to Jay. “I was doing some detective work for you this week.  That farm you are on was owned by a Schultz family some yards back.  And, those Schultz’s had a grandson named Charles - maybe you’ve heard of Charles Schultz?”

The name sounded vaguely family to Jay.  Hugh went on “Charles Schultz went on to be a famous cartoonist - of the Charlie Brown, Peanuts comics.”

That, of course, rang a bell for Jay - everybody knew of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Woodstock, and the characters.

Hugh continued “That pumpkin patch you are fixing up, could have been the inspiration for Linus’ Great Pumpkin.”

Jay knew of the “It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” Halloween special.  That evening they checked out Netflix and found the video and watched it.  It became Trevor’s favorite.  It seemed as if they watched it every day the week before Halloween.

The weather was unusually warm for Halloween in Southeast Minnesota and somehow Trevor had convinced his Dad they could camp out in the Pumpkin Patch that night.  They pitched their tent in the Pumpkin Patch and ran an extension cord to the barn so they had power.

Halloween that year was on a Friday night.  The kids went into town with Jay and went Trick or Treating with some of their school friends.  But, Trevor didn’t want to stay too long.  He wanted to go home and sleep in the pumpkin patch.

So, Jay and Trevor slept in a tent in the pumpkin patch.  Trevor was watching for the Great Pumpkin to come but eventually fell asleep with his dad.

But, the next morning, Trevor woke with some strange feelings in his legs and arms.  His strength was coming back.  Over the next few weeks, Trevor got so strong that he didn’t need his wheelchair and could walk on his own and get around.

Meaghan and Jay took Trevor to the nearby Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota and the doctors were amazed.  Trevor’s cerebral palsy was about one-third of what it had been!!

****

Over the next years, the cerebral palsy didn’t go away but stayed at a low level.  Trevor was able to have a pretty normal life.  The doctors didn’t quite say it was a miracle, but Trevor and Jay thought it was - the Schultz’s pumpkin patch and the Great Pumpkin did work miracles in Trevor’s life!!!

Ahh - a sweet Halloween story!!

LOVE VERSUS HATE - in the form of Good Versus Evil

In whatever culture you look at, there is the concept of Good versus Evil (or Love versus Hate).

*****

Let me look at two cultures that I know something about (better to write about something you know than something you don’t know!!!)(

*****

Judeo-Christian Culture.

In the Judeo-Christian Culture, God is infinitely Good (although he does punish his people from time-to-time).

In this background, God creates everything - and then creates man (Adam) and then creates Woman (from Man).  He puts the two humans in a beautiful garden, but the serpent (or Satan) tricks the humans into disobedience by eating fruit off a forbidden tree.

(Let’s go on that)

It is pretty hard to set up somewhat arbitrary rules and then expect people to follow them.  “Don’t eat this fruit” is a difficult concept for Adam and Eve.  I’m guessing they were thinking “Why doesn’t God want us to eat that fruit?”

Genesis 2:16-17 “And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

There is a game where somebody says “Don’t think of pink elephants for the next five minutes”.  And, (yup) where does your brain go - pink elephants!!!

To me, it almost seems to be a setup.  Can the creatures that God created - in which he gave them brains and free will - be trusted to obey His laws?  Don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t desire your neighbor’s things (or wife), and honor the seventh day by not working and only resting.

It has been millennia since Moses wrote the laws that God gave him - and - guess what, people kill, people steal, people cheat in their marriages, people want what the neighbors have - and, in modern America, Sunday is one of the busiest shopping days - and many people do work on Sundays too.

In the basis of understanding, there is good and evil in the world. <period>.  I can be good, nice, kind, loving, or I can be bad, naughty, nasty and hateful.  I do get to choose what kind of life I lead.

In the Judeo-Christian view, there are more characters than just God and humans.  On God’s side, there are angels (and if you get into angels there are different kinds of angels (Seraphim and Cherubim)- and maybe others.  On Satan’s side, there are demons and demonic spirits.  Humans can have God’s Spirit or have evil spirits. Generally speaking, we get to choose who we will follow.  Joshua 24: 25 says “Choose this Day Whom You Will Serve. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”

Good - (in the Old Testament) was following the laws.  There were (according to one source), 613 law in the Old Testament with 365 of those as “Thou shalt not <rule>”.

Good - (in the New Testament - as I understand it) God stamps good into our brains.  When asked about what are the important laws, Jesus said “Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul, and all your strength” and followed that with “Love your neighbor as yourself”.  Indirectly this is a summation of the Ten Commandments - with four of which relate to following God and the other six relating to how to live (love your parents, don’t steal, cheat, covet, lie, etc.).  So, loving “your neighbor” in effect means, “love everybody”.

Evil (hate) - is pretty much this list (from Galatians 5) “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition(greed), dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

And Good (love) is from this list: “ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

*****

Let’s try a second “philosophy” - Star Wars “The Force”

To me, “the Force” from Star Wars is a good or evil philosophy.  There is the regular Force, trying to keep the peace; and the “Dark Side of the Force” (Darth Vader and Sith Lords) that are evil.  The evil Empire has gone to the Dark Side - even to blowing up planets seeming “just because we can”.  When Obi-Wan suggests telepathically to Luke “Use the Force”, it is like using the good in the world - (maybe like working a miracle or being in-tune with the Holy Spirit).

So, as we end this Halloween season, there IS good and there IS evil.  I am choosing GOOD (but, let’s face it, GOOD is a pretty high expectation - but I’m trying!!!)

LOVE DOES WIN!!

SCARY WEEK - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2020

 SCARY WEEK - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2020

https://www.nhsinform.scot/healthy-living/mental-wellbeing/fears-and-phobias/ten-ways-to-fight-your-fears

FEAR

This week, leading up to Halloween, I’ve looked at scary music, and then yesterday I looked at FEAR.

Let’s finish that article about facing fear.

-6 Don’t try to be perfect

First, you can’t be perfect.

Second, if you strive for perfection - you put extra stress on yourself.

Third, there will be bad days in everyone’s life - your grandmother dies, your spouse gets cancer, your best friend is killed in a car accident.  You can’t control such events.  But, you CAN control how you react to such events.  Do you go into a deep depression when your dog dies?  Do you shut down because your favorite team didn’t win the big game?  (Or, your candidate didn’t win the election?) Sometimes you have to “roll with the punches”

-7 Visualize a happy place

My friends who read this know that when things got back with my surgery and depression, I found a happy place in thinking of being a woman.  (Strange isn’t it?)

-8 Talk about it

Find a friend that you can trust, that you can talk over your fears.  You don’t want a negative person or one that laughs at you and says “You're crazy”, but a good listener.  One that is a positive force (like me!!).

-9 Go back to basics

Some people want to escape their fears through alcohol or drugs. But, generally, that only digs a bigger pit.  Get some good nutrition, get some sleep, get a good walk, and exercise!!!

-10 Reward yourself

When you have faced up to your fear when you made the phone call you have been dreading or fired that employee that you needed to fire; when you break up with that abusive spouse; it might be time to reward yourself.  Do something good for yourself.  Go out to eat, buy a book you have been wanting to read, rent that movie you wanted to see.

*****

Another source was talking about having to deal with a difficult situation at her work.  She knew it wasn’t going to be pleasant to have to correct one of her employees.  She stewed about it for a week and that really built the molehill into a mountain.  Fear that problem.  There might be 30 seconds of true angst, but it will be better for both you (and in this case), the employee.

Fear is frequently seen as “fight or flight”.  Fight the monster coming at you, or run away.  But, you need to really understand what your fear is.  Is this the time to face that monster (that bully, that person who is harassing or abusing you)?

But, you have to determine if the fight is really worth it.

Personal.  I’ve been working early voting for my Texas county.  There are times when my supervisor corrects me for things I don’t consider to be problems (I’m just being enthusiastic!!!!).  But, it has led me to accept the correction.  It just isn’t worth the hassle. I need to “turn the other cheek”, let LOVE WIN, In nine days, this election will be over - it just isn’t worth the confrontation.

Back to a previous question - what fears do you have?  How do you face them?

For me, I need to learn how to put myself in the back and let God take the lead!!!

LOVE WINS!!

FEAR!!

I call this the Phantom of the Opera post.  First - some lyrics (emphasis added in all caps)

Christine

In sleep, he sang to me, in dreams he came

That voice which calls to me and speaks my name

And do I dream again? For now, I find

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA IS THERE

INSIDE MY MIND

Phantom:

“Sing once again with me our strange duet

My power over you grows stronger yet

And though you turn from me to glance behind

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA IS THERE

INSIDE MY MIND

*****

So, the phantom of the opera is there inside my mind.  Christine has allowed the phantom to get into her mind -into her brain - and that causes FEAR

*****

So, my question to you (to us), is what are we afraid of?

Are you afraid of the dark?  Of spiders?  Of drowning?  We all have fears - some fears are real (and good) and some fears are irrational and can get “inside our minds”!!!

The linked article suggests these steps to counter fears:

-1 Take Time Out

When you are in the midst of an anxiety attack or fearful, it can help to clear your mind.  Take a walk, take a bath, make a cup of soothing tea.

-2 Breathe through the Panic

The article suggests: “Stay where you are and simply feel the panic without trying to distract yourself. Place the palm of your hand on your stomach and breathe slowly and deeply.

The goal is to help the mind get used to coping with panic, which takes the fear of fear away.”

Slowly and deeply inhale and exhale.  An article I read recently said count to four as you inhale; hold that breath for a count of four; exhale for a count of four, and then count to four before you inhale again.  Think of a square (or box) with each side being four units - inhale, rest, exhale, rest.

-3 Face your Fears

What are you fearing?  Is it real?  What are the consequences?

Maybe you are scared of getting COVID-19.  While many have died, the great majority of people have recovered and are living full lives again.  Have you had the flu in the past?  It wasn’t fun, but you got over it!!!

Are you fearing the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election (one-way or the other).  What can you do about it (other than vote).  If the election points to person A or person B, what can you do about it?  There are times you have to face your fears.  In reality, will the winner of the Presidential election really change YOUR LIFE?  Maybe your taxes will be higher or lower.  Maybe some other things will happen, but to you in your world, probably very little will really be changed.

-4 Imagine the worst

The article says,

“Try imagining the worst thing that can happen – perhaps it's panicking and having a heart attack. Then try to think yourself into having a heart attack. It's just not possible. The fear will run away the more you chase it.”

Now, I’m going to hijack this for a minute.  Because I’m 73 years old and I am “lucky to be alive”, I KNOW that I will die someday.  I can’t be scared of fear - it comes to all of us.  I can try to escape for a while with exercise, good nutrition, a positive attitude (like LOVE WINS), but someday I will die.  It might be fast like a car crash or it might be slow like slow cancer - but we are all going to die.

Now that isn’t very comforting, but, to me, sometimes just knowing that I’m going to die anyway can cut my fears back.

I did have fears about money.  Will my (our) money last through retirement?  I don’t know, and if it doesn’t, I guess I become homeless and die!!!  (You are saying “Karen, you are generally a Pollyanna - that wasn’t very comforting!!!)

-5 Look at the evidence.

Let’s say I have a fear of getting trapped in an elevator.  Maybe a power outage comes and the elevator stops between floors.  Do you know of anybody in real life that has died in an elevator (not in a movie)?

FEAR - the Phantom of the Opera is in my mind!!  FEAR - the fear of <whatever> is in my mind.  As some of my friends say “Maybe it is just my time to go” (that is dying)

More from this article tomorrow!!!

SCARY WEEK - TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2020

 SCARY WEEK - TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2020

https://besttoppers.com/100-halloween-songs/

Hi friends.

With Halloween on Saturday, I’m trying to find some appropriate materials.

Today, more pop songs for Halloween.

To me, growing up in the 1960s, the #1 Halloween Song was “The Monster Mash”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRLML36HnzU

Chorus:

He did the mash, he did the monster mash

The monster mash, it was a graveyard smash

He did the mash, it caught on in a flash

He did the mash, he did the monster mash

(Not scary, but funny)

*****

Witch Doctor - David Seville (of the Chipmunks concept)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmjrTcYMqBM

*****

Love Potion #9 - the Searchers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rXhXLsNJL8

Again, not Halloween - but with a scary theme:

I didn't know if it was day or night

I started kissing everything in sight

But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine

He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine

*****

Michael Jackson’s Thriller

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA

Lyrics - definitely scary!!!

“It's close to midnight

And something evil's lurking in the dark

Under the moonlight

You see a sight that almost stops your heart

You try to scream

But terror takes the sound before you make it

You start to freeze

As horror looks you right between the eyes

You're paralyzed

'Cause this is thriller, thriller night

And no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike

You know it's thriller, thriller night

You're fighting for your life inside a killer thriller tonight, yeah

*****

Now - the two monster TV shows:

The Munsters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTl5bRYxe80

If you are as old as I am, you remember Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis from “Car 54, Where are you”.  (Or Fred Gwynne as the Judge in My Cousin Vinny)

*****

The Addams Family: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZ5IWRz78DY

“Their creepy and they're kooky

Mysterious and spooky

They're all together ooky

The Adams family”

*****

There have been really scary movies - I can’t really give enough here - but here are a few movies that appeal to me:

Citizens of Halloween - from The Nightmare before Halloween - Tim Burton:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LPg8hqcOIQ

Scary Movies don’t have to be Halloween

How about the Theme from Jaws - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9QTSyLwd4w

The Supersized shark is coming!!!   Watch out!!!

Or, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (just the theme here)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYonXrhW8HY

*****

I generally didn’t watch horror movies (there are many, Friday the 13th, and many more).  Maybe my mind is practicing the “GIGO” concept (Garbage In, Garbage Out).  I acknowledge good and evil in this world (see Friday’s LOVE WIN’S blog)

*****

To me, Halloween is a kid’s holiday - (but one that I enjoy too).  It is the time to go trick-or-treating - not to be scared - but to grab candy.

My costumes over the years have been good!!!  My favorite might have been Zorro - who takes from the bad and gives to the good and need; the ketchup bottle; Miss White (Dr. White’s spinster sister); Farmer Brown; the Great Pumpkin; Miss October 1963, and others.  Always to be fun - not scary, not sinister.

*****

So, how do you celebrate Halloween?  Giving out candy to neighborhood kids (and, just maybe reserving some candy for yourself for later)? A social gathering with lots of fun costumes?

Come back tomorrow for more SPOOK WEEK!!!

LOVE WINS!!
