MUSIC TRIVIA
Part I
Name the tune and the artist for these lyrics
From 1957
I don't want to be your tiger
'Cause tigers play too rough
I don't want to be your lion
'Cause lions ain't the kind you love enough
I just want to be, your teddy bear
Put a chain around my neck and lead me anywhere
1962
I've made up my mind
To live in memories of the lonesome times
(I can't stop wanting you)
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday
1967’
Who's peekin' out from under a stairway
Calling a name that's lighter than air
Who's bending down to give me a rainbow
Everyone knows it's ______
1972
You just call on me brother when you need a hand
We all need somebody to _____ ___
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to _____ ___
1977
I met her on a Monday and my heart stood still
Somebody told me that her name was Jill
(Okay, I’ve got a computer and I recognize the songs, but I didn’t always know the singer!!)

NATIONAL DAYS:
July 18th - National Ice Cream Day
I grew up in a family where ice cream was almost a daily ritual. One of my uncles worked for Borden Foods in an ice cream plant. I like (love?) ice cream, but for the past year, I generally am avoiding it - trying to avoid the sugar. I particularly like Root Beer floats, so vanilla might be my favorite, but cookies and cream make my list, peach ice cream, and whatever is on sale!!!
July 19th - National Words With Friends Day
Words with friends started in 2009. I was teaching in Connecticut and one of my students was working for Apple and was talking about the game. I had been playing a Scrabble game with my sister prior to Words With Friends - and we switched to Words With Friends. I still play. (I occasionally feel sorry for my sister - I do have a bigger vocabulary (too much education I think), so I win about 70% of our games. I have about five others that I play with. (Not that I need another diversion, but you can play against me if you want).
July 20th - National Fortune Cookie Day
The link says: “While these nuggets of enjoyment are most often found at the end of a Chinese meal, they didn’t originate in China. The distinctively folded cookie began in Japan, where elegant desserts and folding techniques are quintessentially Japanese. However, in Japan, the fortune was tucked in the fold on the outside of the cookie. Sometime in the late 1800s, the fortune cookie migrated to the United States and made its transition. During World War II, it exploded in popularity, and Americans have never stopped enjoying them.
July 21st - National Hot Dog Day
There are rare occasions that I eat a hot dog. I have a friend that wants her hot dogs with chili and cheese - and definitely yellow mustard. (And, I get amazed at Joey Chestnut who beat his own record by one this year at the Coney Island Hot Dog contest by eating 76 hot dogs in ten minutes!! I’m not sure I’ve eaten 76 hot dogs in the last ten years!!

JOKES
"I'm afraid for the calendar. Its days are numbered."
"My wife said I should do lunges to stay in shape. That would be a big step forward."
"Singing in the shower is fun until you get soap in your mouth. Then it's a soap opera."
"What do a tick and the Eiffel Tower have in common?" "They're both Paris sites."
"I thought the dryer was shrinking my clothes. Turns out it was the refrigerator all along."
"What do you call a factory that makes okay products?" "A satisfactory."
"What did the janitor say when he jumped out of the closet?" "Supplies!"
"Have you heard about the chocolate record player? It sounds pretty sweet."
"What did the ocean say to the beach?" "Nothing, it just waved."
"Why do seagulls fly over the ocean?" "Because if they flew over the bay, we'd call them bagels."

TODAY IN HISTORY - July 18, 1969
“Shortly after leaving Chappaquiddick Island, Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy of Massachusetts drives an Oldsmobile off a wooden bridge into a tide-swept pond. Kennedy escaped the submerged car, but his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, did not. The senator did not report the fatal car accident for 10 hours.
JULY 19, 1942 George Washington Carver and Henry Ford work on alternative ideas:
The article says “Like Carver, Ford was deeply interested in the regenerative properties of soil and the potential of alternative crops such as peanuts and soybeans to produce plastics, paint, fuel and other products. Ford had long believed that the world would eventually need a substitute for gasoline, and supported the production of ethanol (or grain alcohol) as an alternative fuel.
He and Ford experimented with different crops, including sweet potatoes and dandelions, eventually devising a way to make the rubber substitute from goldenrod, a plant weed.
Hmmm- I don’t think my tires are made from goldenrod - but I do know that I generally have gas that includes ethanol!!!
TUE - JULY 20 1969 walking on the moon
“That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Will we be back some day? Maybe on the way to Mars!!
